McNamara, Watts and Spencer reads well - interested in views regarding Martin's performance - 7 marks and 3 goals sounds good but he was not amongst the best.

Wiser souls than me - does anyone demand a game from this performance?

If you think Sylvia and Rivers go straight in who goes out?

The report is a glowing example of why the Club is going forward.

Strauss - praise of his endeavour and willingness to learn

McNamara - still only very young but developing nicely

Cheney - knocking very loudly on the door and keeping a quality player under control

Spencer - the AFL games are helping him and he is improving every game, he is still very young

Watts - praise and then a bit of a belt, make him try harder

Maric - same as Watts

Gysberts - will only improve

Healey - the great unknown who everybody wants to delist, getting a go and quelling an AFL experienced player, give him time, you will notice the versatility being developed also

Miller - much maligned but did not sulk like Robbo did when he got sent back, leadership, that is why he is still here

Martin - same as Spencer, except his youth is in years playing the game

PJ - an honest appraisal, but he will gat better

Have really appreciated these reports from the VFL coach over the last few seasons, and glad to see that Brad Gotch is continuing the good work. Agree that our depth is improving, and with it the implied pressure on the senior team to 'continue to perform or I will most likely find myself back at Casey'. And of course, this pressure will only increase as players returning from injury demand a senior spot. As you suggest poseidon, it's already difficult for most of us to decide who might make way for the return of a couple of well credentialled senior players. So much so that I'm not convinced that Rivers should be an automatic selection against Richmond, assuming, of course, that he is fit.

Watts looked like a good footballer on Sat night but didn't dominate the game. I thought he was well held at times by his opponents, especially in the air. I saw him well checked a couple of times when attempting to lead which is no mean feat cos he is very quick and good at dummy leading one way to break off into the real lead

He was screaming for the ball when he did find space and it wasn't honored alot, he seems to be playing a style that doesn't suit or isn't expected by the players around him. Calling for the ball further down the field that where and to whom the resultant kick goes to or leading to a side of the ground the ball doesn't end up going to

The best passage of play I saw for the night came when he took/received the ball from near the half back line ran and drilled a pass into the forward line, though that being said I missed bits and pieces of the game due to one of my youngsters "playfulness" and it was hard to see from where we were at one goal end to the other

Sometimes with really smart footballers they struggle a bit in the lower levels as they dont get the service of the pill delivered to them than more adept and smarter players in senior level will deliver.

Watts is no doubt in my opinion only playing to get some games under his belt, and while i know D-Bay has stated a few times that players have to earn their spot, i reckon watts will come in soon and we will see some of his footballing smarts come to the fore.

I think, even if he does come in soon, he will have earned his spot.

They simply won't give him a game until he is ready and i think the two will go hand-in-hand.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
