Cale Morton: Forward or Midfield?

The Bruce comparison was more to do with type (tall, large engine, strong one-on-one) than quality. We all know Bruce's limitations, I don't think there's any need to keep rehashing them.

I see him becoming a Goddard type, capable of kicking 4 goals in a half as a forward, dominating the midfield and being an AA backman.

The thought of him as a permanent CHF makes me drool though.

Morton is the classic player that Dean Bailey wants. The bloke that can hold down a defensive spot, that can provide drive of half back, and play a KPF (depending on who the defenders are) and kick 2 or 3 goals. I would compare him to a James Hird-type player rather than Adam Goodes. I'd like to see him reach that 90kg mark, no heavier, especially if we going to treat him like a true utility.

Not sure about the Bruce words either. Have seen him play some bloody amazing games against the likes of Tarrant (who always seemed to have a field day against Melbourne), Goodes, Hird and even Brad Johnson. He has been by far one of the best players for us in the past decade, but as someone else said in another thread (and I have said since it happened), the day Guerra broke his collar bone was the day C Bruce took a step backwards. From memory that happened in round 4 of that year, by the end of round 3, he had 9 Brownlow votes.

Midfield.

Sorry but he'll never make it as a forward. He's an outside midfielder with a big tank and very good skills. You could throw him forward occasionally but never permanently, just doesn't suit him.

Morton will be a mid until he builds the body he needs to go forward.In todays game,you need 12 mids,9 on the ground and 3 on the bench which is why the FD loaded up on mids with our first 4 picks,you can never have too many quality mids especially taking into account that we'll lose Junior,Bruce and Green in the coming years and there's always a mid or 2 injured at any one time.

Has the kind of Talent that allows him to be a matchup based player. I am not going to compare him to James Hird, however Hird is a prime example of this type of player. He could be moved forward, back and put in the middle and still make the game change.

Cale might be this player for us (once again, no saying he will be at Hird's level, but he could carve out his own name in this type of role).

He has shown some super talent. He is about 300 Cheeseburgers off being a superstar at AFL level!

Morton is going to be an absolute ripper. IF he can get his consistency up.

While not known for an awesome body-on-body game, he's far from soft. When his body finally arrives, he'll relish the opportunity to dish a few out.

I think in the end he'll show why coaches want their recruiters to draft for flexibility, instead of players who play in one place only on the ground. Think James Hird, only not nearly as good obviously.

Will be in our "Hannabal" top 6 players for the next 3 years at least... And after that, who knows?

A few more Kgs and he will be able to play anywhere. Incredibly talented is young Cale Morton.

If we develop our mids and running backs imagine the damage, Watts, Jurrah, Bate, Sylvia and Morton could do up forward - how could you match them all up??

If morton is the third tall forward, what is Bate - all 192cm of him. quick, a great kick, strong mark and very agile. This forward line is looking incredibly difficult to match up on.

hes a wingman, Morton is a stick, i get down to training a fair bit, now jurrah has baulked up more than cale, its just not happening for him in the gym, hes an Andrew Mackie type of player, hes not going to beef enough to dominate up forward,
