Im just a wee bit curious as to how the ND might pan out now. On first glance its not a draft as were used to. The youngens are missing ensnared by the Pied Piper of GC. The pickings arent as good as you get further into the draft by some thinkings.. others view it not so much as lack of depth but of quality past around 15. there are a number of views you can subscribe to.

In recent days an avalanche of players have been delisted. Some were always going to be but there are more than a number of disgruntled and miffed as seemingly ok carreers have been cast to the winds.

Only so may are singular in their choice of ongoing homes. They will go via the PSd . This leaves more than a dozen fairly competent players to look afar in some manner if to continue their AFL playing days.

Herein lays he interest. There would have to be more than a few who would provide better value as later 2nd round and 3rd round picks than some of the draft prosepcts. previously the ex-team players would have only the PSd available to reenter the fray...this year the rules have changed.

We always thought this draft was going to be a tad different...now I think it may well become VERY different.

Some clubs who previously may have thought to only select as far as X may well now rethink and look towards Y etc. This in turn might throw a few more players into the mix..and so it goes on.

The question then is ... will delisted players affect the draft demonstrably..or not ?

Are there 2 many questions in this poll?

Yes -

No -

Just joking mate, i honestly think we will see more delisted players get snapped up in the ND, the "Shallowness" of this draft suggests that it will drop away and some experiance might be handy to clubs,

my 2 cents...

I have to admit what strikes me as curious is that many see no effect to the ND as a result of delisted players nominating and yet the absolute reverse ( as of this posting ) is reflected in q3 with as many suggesting these delisted players WILL now see opportunities ( in the draft ) To me thats contradictory.

I would have thought that as more ( delisted players ) may indeed get picked up in the ND , a chance not previously available , that this categorically DOES affect the ND. It would suggest that the recycled players may get picked up and in so either delay the selction , further down list of the newbee prospects or in some cases deprive them of being picked up at all. ( this year )

In short I expect an effect.. The looming GC seems to be permeating the thinkings of many clubs in ways I hadnt considered.

The number of places which open up on lists is larger than the number of players who have been delisted and re-nominate. Take the total delistings and subtract all the genuine retirements (about a third) and all the guys who simply aren't gonna make it (let's call it another third). The credible re-nominations are actually a pretty small group.

For guys like Tenace or Buckley who have a shot at being picked up, a few extra chances make a big difference. If it goes from just four picks used on recycled players to eight picks , that's double the chances for them.

But for the general mass of nominees in a draft of perhaps sixty picks, those four are only about 6.5% of the opportunities.

DD am not expecting all ..or even half..or a quarter even really to get recycled through the ND..but its a lot more than would occur in other years via the PSD. I can only presume that this will have some sort of knock on effect. Many pundits dont really expect all clubs to go past the third round with less taken in the draft than many other years.

Im just pondering the notion that with other bodies now included with maybe something to offer ( as some runs possibly on the board, as opposed none for newbee draftees) that those clubs not looking to an entire rebuild but trying to pick the carcass of the draft, that some kids who might have just snuck through might get bumped. Until the mass delistings of this week this might not have been apparent.

Youd think Hooper McDonald Tenace, Coughlan ( even ) would get a look in... Buckley might.. even Valenti might appeal ahead of others at say around pick 50 etc..

If some clubs are looking at a little depth ..if even of so -so quality but just enough to get them through to next year and weigh it up again then this draft might prove very entertaining.

the point being...normally drafts are just that..pure and unsullied..and you do your homework and takes your chances etc.. This year its a smaller pool and its tainted with interlopers..A new team looms ..actually 2. A very different thing from past years.

I'm not sure. On the one hand, if there is less young talent, then maybe some clubs will feel that a punt on a delisted player would be more worthwhile.

On the other hand, a delisted player is a delisted player. Doesn't matter what year it is. They were delisted for a reason.

I reckon it will differ between clubs. If BP thinks the draft is so shallow that the probability of a kid turning into a decent AFL player is less than the probability that we get good service out of an older, delisted player, then he will go for a delisted player, won't he?

Im not thinking we would go after anyone really...other than Ball in the PSD..... but if McDonald was still there at 18 or even 34.. would you ??

Am more thinking a handful of other clubs might have to revise their thinkings.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
