Could be going too far back but... Chopper Lovell. Turley was a broken player, were the medical tests as stringent then?

Take the emotion out of the Brock trade and it makes a lot of sense. He excelled in close but wasn't really offensively damaging, we are more then likely picking up two clearance machines with draft selections 1 and 2, add them to Jones, Moloney, Grimes. One of our pure inside mids had to go. Just hoping that Pick 11 yields a really good player.

Every club has one of these lists, it is part of running a club. On the other side of coin we have had some impressive trades go our way (Phil Gilbert for Jeff Farmer).

The past is what it is, move on and hope out future can be brighter without these players (none of the above mentioned could deliver us a flag so why pine over them!)

All Clubs in all sports make mistakes, Michael Jordan was drafted with the 3rd overall pick in the 1984 NBA draft. The portland trailblazers may never live that down (pick #2), but to dwell in the past is to miss the present, and hopefully bright future of a club.

You have got to be kidding about knocking Murphy out of their midfield.

Thompson wanted to go home. Fact of life is that their wasn't really anything we could do about it. At that stage Melb supporters could see the immense potential, but he was effectively a young talent who was very injury prone. We got pick 12 which was no tradgedy.

Simmonds, really don't think that one hurt us a great deal. No world beater.

Jolly, we got a first round pick for him, I was actually impressed we got that considering he was our back up ruck.

A potential midfield of Moloney, Jones, Davey, Grimes, Sylvia, Trengrove and Scully. Then players like Blease, Strauss and Morton we hope will run through there. Mclean is a very similiar type to Moloney and Jones. Grimes and Sylvia are both going to also be hard bodies in the middle. I also think with a bit more strength Mckenzie could be another good inside type of midfielder. I honestly don't think trading Mclean out is going to be such the dramatic move that you are making it out to be. While pick 11 is unproven, in this market place that is the best you are going to get for Mclean. There is a very good chance we are going to get a quality player with it as well.

I hardly think we are a joke of a club for doing this trade.

Can't agree Freak. In recent seasons Brock has looked unift and slow and his disposal has been average. And yes, injury is to blame for the Brock of recent seasons but it is a fact that he has missed 28 games in 5 seasons and substantial parts of pre seasons with leg injuries. Unless that changes and he is able to stay free of injury long enough to build up the elite level endurance required for a slow inside mid then he will continue to be the limited player that he has been in recent years.

But if you reckon Maclean's kicking is better than Grimes then we are viewing our games through different eyes.

There is as always one thing we can agree on. Its all about MFC PS13.

Are they the same blinkers that you had on in describing Newton as having no flaws?

And McLean wont knock Murphy out of the Carlton midfield at all. They will play completely different roles.

I think Freak states a reality that some can't handle. Not sure about the Marc Murphy being pushed out for Mclean though, atm anyway.

We were all happy to say how Mclean has been playing injured all season and with a pre-season under his belt will have a top season in 2010. But now that he has left everyone jumps off board and says how bad he is and how pick 11 is worth it. FACT and odds say that pick 11 will not be as good as Brock and not deliver what he did at such an early age and with such leadership. The positive is that we got something out of it and pick 11 gives us a higher chance of getting a good player. One thing Freak needs to accept is that we are a sh!t club on field and that Mclean leaving has a lot to do with that. In the future when (I hope) we are dominating, players will not leave, but in fact want to come to Melbourne. It's just a cycle. I think a lot of people are trying to make themselves feel better about the whole deal. Just because a view or an opinion is in favour or biased towards MFC don't automatically take it's side.

let go too easily? they wanted to go. you want players who dont want to play for the club? one went home for family reasons, two left for more opportunity as they were significantly behind the number 1 ruckman, and the other is just generally unhappy. and whats more he was out of contract. if we had have let him go to easily we wouldnt have got pick 11 and instead we would have got nothing.

2)we didnt roll over for FFS. what did you want us to do, play hard ball try and keep a disgruntled player (that would mean he would have to sign a contract again - highly unlikely) or not do anything and see him at another club via the PSD

Taking emotion out of it can be difficult around here but I feel we have done as well as we could have out of the trade.

McLean wanted to go to Carlton and we get their first pick, we won't be able to measure for about 5 years who wins out of it! Pick 11 is not necessarily a poor pick, the last five years it has unfolded like this:
