Davey in, Petterd to the Bench. Jones out of the 22. He is no 23!

His last 6 weeks were solid.

He will play BP and a little on ball and play most games.

As I lay in bed last night unable to sleep with my memory of Jurrah's snap over his head playing in a constant loop in my mind, I began to ponder who our best 22 assuming everyone is fit will be to start 2010...

Here is my proposed team.

11 of these players were not in the side that would just about have knocked off the minor premiers (if we hadn't resorted to a forward line of Robbo and Whelan when we were 15pts down in the last quater!) yesterday..... NO WONDER I COULDN'T SLEEP, WHO CARES ABOUT THE FINALS, BRING ON 2010 and the Demon's premiership glory!!!

This is exciting simply because it's so hard to do. Couldn't fit Bruce in. Expecting a big pre-season from McLean also. Scully and trengove must play - lot's of games into them in 2010 along with Watts.

Assuming they are fit, if Scully and Trengove are not good enough to break into the MFC side from the pre season and practice matches I would be surprised.

Based on the film clips and the trusted reviews of both players they should be certainties to get a taste early.

If they show they are good enough pre Round 1 why would not you play them?

Whether the squad is fully fit or not is irrelevant. If their form demands they get selected, they should be selected...period. Why cut our noses off? If they are good enough to be there then they should be in the team. Why should others get selected who are not as good as them? Why cant the others aern their stripes? Just does not make sense. Lets not get unduly distracted by pretence and cliches.

I wouldn't go as far as saying his last half of the year, probley his last 5 games were very good. He is obviously a great leader for the young ones coming through, more then we realise.

I haven't forgotten about Scully or Blease, just think it would be better for them to debut a little later on in the season- mainly because they are both small and used to playing against other kids. Trengove being the ready-made senior and Strauss already being a solid frame with a full pre-season, both should be ready for round 1.

We have so many good players coming through its sad to see some may just miss out.

I think we will go with experience (pending on fitness) until we can guage where MFC sits in 2010.

Rucks: If Jamar continues to improve on this years form he will easily be our no.1 ruckman. Spencer to continue development and will get a few games, though don't expect a massive improvement just yet. PJ will get a few games also, depending on who we are playing, match-ups and so forth. Along with Meeson good cover for injuries. Zomer de-listed.

Mids: Injuries permitting, Moloney, Sylvia, Davey, Jones, Maclean, Green, Bruce and Morton all walk up starters next year. With Sylvia, Davey, Green and Morton rotating forward; Jones, MacDonald, Grimes, Cheney and Valenti rotating through the back half. Should also have Blease, Strauss and perhaps 2 top draft picks this year pushing for selection.

Backs: The strongest part of our team, and if all are fit will be very hard for some guys (cheney, valenti) to get a game. Could be an indication of what may happen in the coming weeks. Garland still a bit unknown, I have him on the bench as a plan B ready to be thrown forward or back as required. Grimes to spend more time in the middle of the ground.

Forwards: A lot depends on Watts off/pre season. If he bulks up significantly, will be on the ground round 1, if not, could spend a lot of time at Casey next year. I have him on the bench but could be replaced by the likes of Martin, Miller, Dunn, Draft pick? I believe Petterd and Jurrah both have the ability to kick multiple goals each and every week and are both certain starters. The small forward spot will be hotly contested, will be Wona's if he makes a full recovery.

I have left out this years draft picks as unknown quantities but would hope the top 2 are good enough to be walk up starters in round 1.

Dunn is also a big out for me, would think he would be used as a specialty tagger, as this year, selected against certain teams for a specific job. (Cornes, Pav) Further development could well see him force his way into the side on a more permanent basis.

Martin, and to a lesser extent, PJ, may only be selected if we are looking for a taller forward line, and even then Jamar may have them covered.

Though as with Dunn, Martin could be a bolter over the pre season and cement a regular spot in the line up.

Jetta, Bennell, Maric, Strauss, Blease, Bell will all be fighting for a spot and this competition can only be good for our side. Keeping pressure on the rest to keep performing or lose their spot.

Be interesting to see who we take in the PSD, got some big shoes to fill.

Exactly. To use a more tangible example, I doubt Geelong are salivating at the fact that the have Kane Tenace on their list, nor are St. Kilda wetting themselves with delight that Colm Begley is good for a game here and there. I believe that if you're classed as 'depth' for more than a year or two in a row, your career is probably not going to last much longer.

I also happen to think there's a lot of rubbish in our 'depth' anyway.

But it's not about your 15-25 best players.

It's all about your best 6 or 7 - the better they are, the better we will be.

And you could argue that the quality of your depth is not nearly as important as the fitness levels of your depth.

A healthy list, one that can consistently play the same 25-28 guys is probably the key to success these days. We see the way Hawthorn have just been decimated by injury, and you just need to compare them to a lesser talent in Collingwood who have no injury dramas, to understand why fitness is so important.

Your top 6 will win your premierships, but a fit list will get you there.
