AFL Proposes Rookie-List Players Join Trade Week

The AFL and the AFLPA have put a recommendation to the clubs that rookies be part of trade week, and that any rookies traded would go onto the receiving club’s senior list.

"Our draft and salary cap rules have enabled every club in the competition to contest a preliminary final during this decade but it is also extremely important that we continue to provide the best opportunities for a player to be able to move clubs to further his career, if those opportunities are available at another club.

"The proposal to allow rookie-list players to be part of any trade, so as to secure a potential agreement, has had strong initial support in our discussions with clubs, and the AFL is now seeking formal feedback from all the clubs on their final views" said Jill Lindsay

I think this is a very innovative concept - would allow clubs to trade for rookies on other clubs lists (ie. a ruckman etc)

.... looks like the AFL are a little afraid of the emergence of Free Agency <_<

Certainly has merit... think I need to think it through more, but on first impression is quite interesting.

Exactly what I thought when I heard it -- as it doesn't look like we see Valenti having a future in our midfield, we can on-trade him and get something half-decent in return.

Not to mention the fact he can go somewhere where he may get a better chance to prove his worth.

It seems the real bonus for say us..as a club , is that you can garner some value for what would otherwise be a delisting without benefits. Good for players too but am inclined to take the more mercenary view..
