I would stick with Cale. He`s in red hot form this year with 34 disposals in round 7 and 37 in round 8. This kid looks the real deal I tell ya.

Cale will be very good. Cyril will be great. Should win a Brownlow. He's one of the most balanced and skilfull players I've seen at such a young age. He's just small. While I think Cale will certainly be tasty, Cryril is DELICIOUS!

Who would you have drafted? Selwood may be?

maric was a gun around goals at junior level , he has only played a handful of games, will become a valuable player going forward. Joel is the standout brother at this stage.

I know that if my aunt had whiskers she would be my uncle, but it is great to see a debate on a Hypothetical.

We all can get passionate about stuff, but sometimes it is interesting to look back at what if. Any way it is always in ones opinion.

Dont get personal, and I am glad that we are all passionate D's supporters.

Here are a list of skills I think Rioli holds over Cale.

Kicking

Speed

Agility

Tackling

Marking

Cale probably has a bigger tank and his work rate is elite.

Honestly can't think of anything else.

Yes one day he may be as good or better at these skills than Rioli, but at this point in time I would much rather have a Rioli running around in ANY position than have Cale accumulating a majority of loose ball gets/meaningless possessions.

Think with your head people, not your hearts.

Morton was highly rated for his airial ability and marking, he hasnt really shown much of that probly cus he hasnt played to much up forward as he did in his under 18 years.

Also his agility to get around and out of tough situations was a standout of what i saw.

Honestly IMO i recon morton still going to get alot better but im not so sure as if rioli can develope much more attributes to his game? At this point i wouldnt swap.

well if they rated grimes as the 4th best player then our recruiting staff have some issues. His kicking action is flawed, not majorly..but its flawed nonetheless

The consensus view amongst recruiters was that Grimes was a top 5 draft pick before he injured his back. The fact he slipped to 14 was a total bonus for Melbourne. Doctors were always confident that with improved training and conditioning his problems could be overcome. So far, so good. Criticising Morton and Grimes makes you look really silly.

I'm just glad hawthorn supporters aren't reading this.

Comparing Morton to Rioli is comparing quantity versus quality.

Why wouldn't you compare them ? They were both first round picks in the same draft, so right from the outset it's a reasonable proposition. The conclusion people come to may cause reason to raise eyebrows, but not the comparison itself. Value and output can be determined with all players, especially when measured against cost, ie the pick used. Follow ?

As an aside, what did you expect from a 19 year old 193cm utility a third of the way through his second season ? Has he exceeded your expectations or failed to live up to them ? Naturally when these players were chosen they weren't chosen with year 2 in mind, otherwise Rhys Palmer would have been pick 1. They were chosen for what they will deliver in years 4/5 years plus. They were chosen for what they would do between the ages of 22-30. We all know that you think he'll never adequately fill into his frame, which will inhibit his progress. You don't believe that he can pack on the required weight. So scrub that question. Your view on him in his second year isn't worthy of consideration.

I hope footy savvy supporters aren't reading this.

i expected good foot skills

He is 19. Luckily for the MFC, the quality of a player's disposal by foot is not determined by chance, but my a multitude of factors like talent, experience, confidence, training, conditions and perception (by dullard supporters). I happen to think that a) Morton is a good kick of the football and b ) a players disposal can change more over time than many commentators (and sheep) like to think. Brad Sewell is No.3 for Inside 50s this year, and I remember how he used to kick the football in 2004.

i have said this before , i think Morton should look at tapes of Adam goodes, tall ,athletic good speed and leap. watcing Morton the last couple of weeks at the G against the Crows and Dogs, if he was playing any wider he would have been in the carpark. having said that the kid is a future superstar , next year will be his breakout year. he needs another pre season in the gym. rioli plays as a small forward, he also walked into a more developed team. he doesnt need to get any bigger to play the role of the small forward. we have got our selves the better player in the long term.

I completely disagree. Players disposals rarely improve dramatically over the years. just look at richo, bate, schammer etc. And some times experience can make you a worse kick, just ask nick riewoldt.

And brad sewell still isnt a great kick. inside 50's has nothing to do with quality of disposals. Its like talking to a 6 year old.

If Melbourne wanted a player like Rioli they would have drafted him, they didn't, so they didn't. Morton will be a star for us so even if Rioli is a star for the Hawks it doesn't matter. We needed a certain type of player and went for him simple as that.

Stewie Loewe went from one of the worst kicks to pretty good so it can be achieved

You argue that a player's disposal can only stay the same, or get worse. That is completely ridiculous.

You know what's funny about this? We're all so used to Freak cming up with the most ridiculous statements it's now almost expected from him. If anyone else came up with stuff like 'Gary Ablett isn't talented, he's only good because his body shape means he can't get tackled' they'd be laughed off the forum and too embarrased to return under the same username.

Every village has one.

Wasn't the thinking of the club at the time to recruit the best player available? Arguably that was Rioli. Instead the club went for the type of player they think we needed the most, hence we got Morton.

No complaints at this stage - still think there may be more upside to Morton than Rioli, but both will be excellent players.

Sydney might be a little unhappy about their choice, but there is a fair bit of drafting for needs between our pick at 4 and Hawthorn at 12 - particularly Essendon and St Kilda.

Vespresmi (or however you spell it) would be playing but he's injured.

Definitely in the Swannies best side imo

And that's what he's got - excellent footskills. He's an elite kick.

Btw, did anybody see Gibbs absolutely torch the footy by foot today ?

I completely disagree. Players disposals rarely improve dramatically over the years.

Loewe, Robertson and Tredrea were all terrific marks but terrible and in some cases embarrassingly sub standard kicks when they started and each have kicked over 400 goals each over there career. You would never have thought that possible when they commenced. There improvement in their kicking was substantial and they are just the obvious ones. Some players can and do improve their kicking some dont.

For someone who flaps on a about kicking technique, you really do know so little about the game. An outspoken pillar of football ignorance.

There were a number of Demonland Trackwatchers at Gosch's Paddock this morning to bring you their observations from Preseason Training. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti

Welcome back to Demonland for those like me who have been on vacation. I’m posting this with some trepidation because of a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding the return of preseason training in 2025 after a flurry of weddings including those of our coach, one of our superstar players and a former premiership champion player and bloke, not to mention the recent mysterious incident that occurred on the Mornington Peninsula.  I believe that the team reassembles this morning at Casey Fie

SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to
