Meanwhile, in the reserves Box Hill gave Casey a flogging.

Casey 12.6.78 to Box Hill 23.14.152

Healey and Spencer best of the Melbourne players. Zomer struggled early in defence but was good when moved to attack. Liam Jurrah was quiet but what he did, he did well.

Quarter Time: Casey Scorpions 3.5.23 Box Hill Hawks 3.1.19

Hughes and Bell 1 goal each

That was a very wasteful quarter from Casey which was kicking to what appeared to be the scoring end. After conceding the first goal, Casey was in control of the play for most of the quarter but had a lot of trouble converting with Danny Hughes the main offender. Hughes was lively and took several marks but his 1.3 for the quarter should have been at least 3.1 and Casey should be much further in front on general play.

The other goalkicker is ruckman Tim Mohr.

A change came over the game half way through the second quarter after Casey fought back to lead by 16 points. Suddenly, the Scorps were hesitant and stopped running and Box Hill came at them strongly to wrest the lead temporarily. Casey held a narrow lead at the break after a strong quarter from Neville Jetta and looked relieved when the half time siren rang.

Box Hill Hawks jumped Casey again with the first goal of the third term and look to be well in control at this stage of proceedings.

Meanwhile - details of the reserves game which Box Hill won easily:

Casey Scorpions 2.2.14 3.3.21 7.5.47 12.6.78

Box Hill Hawks 7.3.45 13.6.84 16.10.106 23.14.152

Box Hill Hawks Conyers 4 Cross Hoegel Parker Underwood 3 Marcius Walsh 2 Bull Sandilands Sherwen

Best

Casey Scorpions Healey Lees Waite Williams Bolton Virtue

Box Hill Hawks Cross Bull Carey Parker Nye Sandilands

Who is playing well and who isnt?

The Casey Scorpions are just 9 points in front in a mistake riddled game and that may not be enough because the hawks have the scoring end in the final quarter. Much will depend on who kicks the first goal of the final quarter.

Daniel Bell is showing great intensity and is working strongly and tackling hard. Neville Jetta has been very creative while Mark Jamar is working his way into the game against Renouf whoo has probably been just on top in the ruck. James Strauss and Jack Watts have both been quiet.

The Scorpions stopped to a walk and were over run in the last quarter to record a disappointing 15 point loss.

Casey Scorpions 3.5.23 6.8.44 8.11.59 10.14.74

Box Hill Hawks 3.1.19 6.5.41 7.8.50 13.11.89

Goals

Casey Scorpions McNamara Mohr Newton 2 Bell Hughes Jetta Stockdale

Box Hill Hawks Gibson 4 Breust 3 Lisle 2 Iles Kennedy Neil Smithwick

Just got home from the long trek to casey.

A bad loss in the end. Was a pretty horrid game. Skills were terrible and there was only a slight breeze.

Of the dees players, straight of the bat with Watts. Wasn't his day. Didn't really get into the game and might be a fair way off senior footy. looked good when in space though.

Jamar took some big marks and i thought was pretty good.

Bell has a real crack, kicked a goal and played really well.

Buckley was ok another that turned it over a little.

Newton was a typical newton day really kicked 2 but could and should've done a lot more.

Strauss was ok.

Hughes took some good marks, kick 1.3 in the first quarter, set up newton and jetta with clever handballs in the 2nd. Really impressive and hopefully we give him a crack at senior level..

Jetta, was creative and dangerous, missed a few oppurtunities..

Not sure who i missed... but they tried the run carry and handball game and it just didn't work..

sorrry i missed tom mac... he kicked 2 goals and was quite good.. Not sure of his proper position though was bit all over the ground. Was another guilt of a few turnovers..

Strauss played? I thought he was suspended?

Thanks for the review Peter. Good work.

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
