The Captaincy

Announced on Fox Sports News that the MFC captaincy would be decided soon ... definitely before the end of the year.

My money's on Brock.

i want it to be brock, but if i was a betting man i would put my money on a bruce or a green

Had a good chat to ... well lets just say someone 'close' to McLean tonight and just from what i hear i can;t stop loving the guy. Apparently Brock has had some massive offers from Richmond and Essendon in particular, to earn much more then he does at Melbourne and has flat out refused them and will be the one club player. Apparently he absolutely loves the club, and the smart money is on him being captain.

As long as there is ONE Captain i have no problem with who

Brock IMO would be fine

With the addition of West it just might be a blessing for him and the team

For me brock is ready and fits in well with our direction and youth policy. Bruce and Green are great players but don't always have their heart on the the sleeve when they are out there. You know every game brock plays there is nothing left in the tank at full time.

If Brock is named Captain, I'll 100% buy a new Dees jumper (number 7?) with 5 on the back! Will the new jumper be a much different colour next year?

Seconded. We can form some sort of Brock Brigade. The only major difference between next years jumper and this years is that there will be no 150 logo and a different sponsor.

Not if Schwabby gets his way

I think the club will go with Bruce or Green. I really hope they go with McLean though. He may struggle a bit with the role in 2009, but thereafter he'll be fantastic - and he'll benefit from a year as Captain in 2009. The club keeps talking about building for the future - if that's the case, it has to be Brock.

Didn't he say he wants to put the colour of the jumper back to what it used to be?

Apparently the Barassi era version.

Brock's the one i want, anyone else would feel like a soft option. He projects exactly image we want the footballing world to see going forward.

Not only that but I think he would be a big chance to take the next step as well. He might go from a Very, Very good play to elite within a year or 2 with the extra responsibity and if we are lucky a few others in the middle might go along for the ride (ALA Hawks).

I wonder what the odds of making the 8 at this stage are for next year, might be worth investing a bit of the hard earned!

I think the club would want Jimmy Mac to captain the club in 2009 with the idea of Brock taking over in 2010. However Jimmy's recent poor form might force them to bring in Brock one year earlier

yeah, i get the feeling J Mac won't be on the field much this coming season a la Richie Vandenberg or Scott Burns (admittedly due to injury)

I would like to see Brock.. but I feel it'll be McDonald for 09 and McLean from 2010 onwards.

If not McDonald or Brock in 2009, I hope it goes to Green ahead of Bruce.

I am tipping Bruce with regrets.

Brock has not been clean and sober for long enough. So I would prefer Green who IMO kept going when the going got tough.

If that's the case, I hope the club has had a quiet word in Brock's ear about his future captaincy role.

Then again, it may be Green or Bruce for next year but the same thing applies.

Brock is a future Melbourne captain - it's when, not if.

I'm betting he learnt a fair bit about commitment and passion for the club from Neita as a one club player and captain and took that well on board.

His contribution to the club's finances was exceptional and he tried to shun the publicity that followed.

It was almost like he paid a fine for his previous indiscretions and said 'I'm ready'.

Sorry 45, are we talking one of the variety of blue shades? Which one? The lighter shade of the 80's or one of the darker shades we have had since? Which one?

The darker one.

Blue rather than the almost-purple it is now.

Thats pretty funny steve_f. Not many people, including players have been clean and sober for long enough. That's life, but I'll back Brock as generally a sound, sober, clear thinking citizen, who has great values as indicated by his love for the club, both financially and at heart, and with total guts on the field! A model for other players, and a ready leader of men!

Great news! The colour blue used during our great era, 55-64 would be magnificent!

Answer: BROCK MCLEAN- besides being one of the better contributors on the footy field, the name has captaincy written all over it for a start, its bold, strong, confronting, represents change......

........now lets look at another contender:

cameron bruce - it doesn't hold the same characteristics to me...

I believe it was 30's to 60's DD, an even more successful period!

hrm

leadership.

first

the club and players must decide what it wants to be.

i dare say they will want to decide they are the hardest working, who work together the best (or something)

then its simple

select the leaders on who fit what they want to become the best.

if we want to be the hardest working club, pick the hardest worker as the captain.

its simple.

if we want to be the slackest, softest club around

pick bruce.

they voted on this concept last season & that's how they ended up with the leadership group. Cant' remember if it determined captain, but i don't think so.

mmm and it changed and changed again.

as they understand it more, their votes will change too

and as the younger kids become more confident in their environment and start to take ownership of it.

last year they put white, yze and nieta in it, and to those young kids those choices probably looked pretty good a year ago.

its a long process.

took the cats 10 years but look where they are now

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
