Melbourne supporters sign up for $6000-a-head fundraiser

MELBOURNE has taken a wrecking ball to its debt, gaining pledges from supporters worth more than $1 million. Already 140 backers have promised the minimum outlay of $6000 to attend Tuesday night's "Debt Demolition" dinner.
The Demons will hold a luncheon late next month for more rank-and-file members.

"We will cater for those who want to contribute, say, $500-plus," Stynes said.

"After Tuesday night, we need the balance of the members to come forward and help us with the rest."

Stynes is confident at least another 10 backers will pledge support before Tuesday.

He urged interested parties to call the club on 9652 1113.

This is fantastic news.

I can't wait till I can afford these events.

Obviously the club can't either

Love the way he talks about it.

Not, we hope people get involved, it's just "people will get involved", some will pay some, the rest will clear the rest of the debt

If it can raise 2 mil, that would leave around $140 per adult member required to clear the debt. Foxtel chipping in 100,000 still? that lessens it again. Hopefully we can get it to as little as possible, i'm still confused how it went from being around 2 million and shrinking, to 5 million

Good to see blokes like Guest and Johnson who basically wanted to have the MFC "merged" are now quite apologetic for their actions and are now donating large sums of money to the club to help with this Demon Debt Demolition.

I wonder if Gutnick and a few other Demon supporting millionaires will also offer a large donation???

Personally I think it will and should be the rank-and-file Melbourne supporters that will have to fork out the money to pay off the debt as it is those supporters that buy their memberships and try to turn up to as many games as possible who wish to keep the Melbourne Football Club alive.

I hope we can not only wipe off our debt of $5 million but add on another couple of million (so we are in the black) that way we never have to deal with this problem of debt again.

apparently the 150 foundation heroes will have their names on an honour board beside the 150 melbourne heroes. i just sent an email to club suggesting they should auction the rights to have their names next to a certain players name, so for example if you want your name beside ron barrassi's you'd auction against others in the room to secure the right.

How much would Hopgood get?

Great idea.

I'd say you'd be the highest bidder, so what would you pay? :)

Think you will find it won't work that way. It might detract from the donating if done that way. Also you don't really want donors on a board with the best players of the club.

There will be a board for the players and another for the donors.

Does anybody know anyone who is going? If so any idea on what they are planing to donate? Someone mentioned a 200K donation at one stage

The minimum donation is $5,000.00 after a $1,000.00 entry ticket.

There are apparently 140 acceptances so far and obviously some will be in a position to give more than the minimum.

This function could raise $2 million to help with the club debt.

The club will then look to the members and other initiatives to erase the balance.

If we could then get $100.00 a member after the function it would erase the debt and we would save $500.000.00 a year in interest

The month of August is critical, if this funtion could raise $2 million alone, its a great start and it could dare I say it, "snowball", from there. ;)

Let's hope so.

lets not beat around the bush, this is all about raising money. if auctioning the rights to have your name next to another raises money for the club who cares? it doesnt take away from say the paul hopgood's. if i was picked in the top 150 players of the melbourne football club, i couldnt care less if no one bid to have their name next to mine. the honour is being named a top 150 player, not on how much a supporter bids.

the demons, if they follow my proposed idea would have found something that supporters find value in. this intangible did not exist prior to the dinner, yet has the potential to raise bucketloads of cash.

all these initiatives are about reducing debt, whilst you ve got a heap of rich people around a table at once, throw some ideas at them.

I've got an idea, Johnno can sell his house and proceeds can be used to wipe off the debt and put the club in the black. He can come live in my garage, work for a year at Ch7, then buy a new house!

I trully believe Stynesy is going to get this club back on its feet again, & not just standing-moving forward. Everyone buy a Copy of "The Red Fox" read it, The money will roll in. Norm Smith & Stynesy. This book has come out just at the right time.

Ime waiting to see what the lesser Dinner Lunch is all about for us reguliar Folk. Big Month

Mot sure Mate-couple of weeks after the "Gold Class Dinner" i am tipping. We all gotta empty the wallet that night.

Is anyone on demonland attending this dinner? If so...LEGEND!

Well, I bought a $200 raffle ticket.......

My government funded existance won't allow for any more, but if wishes were horses ;) !!!

Congrats to everyone involved and well done to Stynes and the organisers it is great news.

I practically wept when I saw the article

Last few days have been rough, full of just plain antagonistic journos having a go, FatPrick Smith, the Crickey article... there was also the suggestion that the Debt Demolition event was undersubscribed, which had be really worried.

Now we're looking at a million at least from the 'big players' this coming tuesday. Hopefully we'll clear another million from the general supporters. Then there's the 100k from Foxtel.

I'm throwing together a fundraiser myself - poker night, low stakes of clourse, winner takes all in the form of a tax deductable donation made to the club in their name. Hopefully that'll be worth a couple of hundred maybe.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
