Whilst reading a mediocre article the other day displaying that Paul Johnson was our most improved player I couldn't help but think whether or not Emma Quail (I think that was the author's name) had actually watched the Demons play?

Make no mistakes Paul Wheatley at the age of 27 has been in the systems for yonks but in a way is finally having his break out season.

Having been decimated by injury he has been able to get his body right and play some great damaging football. His massive kick is vitally important to the structure of our team whether it be him kicking or playing a link role through the middle of the ground. Averaging 23 disposals this year I expect him to finish 2nd behind Green in the B&F.

I'm not so sure he is having his break out year..............I've seen him play plenty of good footy over the years.........I think he has just been grossly underrated by our own fans, and is finally getting the credit he deserves!

I would be hesitant but everyone is expendable at the right price.

As someone said, I think Wheatley has played this type of footy before, but not consistently.

He also seems to have been given a more attacking role this year, which suits him to a tee.

I've always wanted to see him playing up around the wing, rather than down in defence, to better use his strengths.

he cant play tall, he is too slow to play short. he kicks it long but isnt classy enough. he doesnt get enough of it himself to make up for the fact that he isnt the best finisher going around.

i like him on the wing, pushing up and attacking, but he is just a cog in a team. he will play his role each week no doubt, but will rarely if ever win games off his own boot.

if we wanted to trade him 3rd rounder at best.

he is worth more than that to us so we keep him.

if we could get pick 25 for him id take it in an absolute heartbeat. but it wont be offered.

I wouldn't be actively looking to trade him because I'd be happy to keep him, and he doesn't have a high trade value.

that is a trade that may have something in it. if we could get pick 10-12 for those two we would have to seriously consider it. neither would have more than 3 years left of great footy even though they might be around for another 4-5.

my concern with a trade such as this is that we will be left with no senior players to guide the younger players with all the retirements we will have. if we are left with davey, bruce, robbo, carrol, moloney, rivers, wheelan and miller (and jamar?) as our only over 25's we might have a great future, but it would be a strange position to be in. especially given there is no guarantee that 4 of those will be fit enough to play much of next year, and that there are serious question marks over two of their futures in the 1sts.

I see your point but I'm confident the coaches we have will guide are youngsters just fine.

I'd scrap Robbo Carroll and Whelan from that list.

robbo and carrol are contracted next year. we cant scrap them.

wheelan, i thought he was gone, but if he holds form he might save himself given the other retirements, or he might get a push given robbo and carrol must be retained. maybe we keep him if we move on green and wheatly.

Wheaties is playing some good footy! Still young enough to be a contributor for a premiership. Get off his case! We dont need to trade everybody. Some players mature later. He clearly is doing that! Change of coach can bring the best out of this group. Bailey will do this. Give them a go! Wheaties, Miller, P.Johnson, etc. are playing some great footy. I would'nt be trading many players at all or even any at all. White, Yze, Meesen are the most likely to make way.

With all respect to Paul he's just not going to play in a premiership. It's that simple, he's not a premiership player by a long way. So we should trade him for whatever we can get and recruit a young hopeful with something to prove.

I think that is a silly comment! How many players you would'nt think would be premiership players actually are? Plenty! Every Premiership side has them. It's all about doing your bit for the team, you dont have to be a star to play in Premierships! Just play your bit.

Wheatley should be played on the wing as a link up player who can put it on the chest of our forwards with pinpoint accuracy.

The distance (up to 50+ metres) that he can do this from will be invaluable.

He can do this now as Chris Johnson looks settled enough across half back and is very good on the kick ins.

Love seeing him hit up Bate or Miller on a strong lead.
