This guy has frustrated me for many years now. He is a dominant ruckman in the VFL, and I'm not using "dominant" lightly. He has been carving it up in the state league this year, and it annoys me that this form does not translate in the AFL. I still think he has as much ability as Darren Jolly, who we opted to trade out of Melbourne four years ago.

Does his form in the VFL just confirm the discrepancy in standard between VFL and AFL, or is it simply that Jamar lacks the confidence to perform at AFL level?

Like Jolly, he's also lived in Jeff White's shadow at Melbourne and needs to go elsewhere to establish himself. White should be # 1 ruckman at the club for at least to the end of next year.

Yes. He's not up to AFL. He's far too slow in mind and body to cut it at the next level. With the difference in pace at the lower grade he can make more contests and take a few grabs.

A classic example of a good VFL player who's found his right level.

He needs to watch a video of how Ben Hudson plays and mimic him. Similar sized bodies. If Jamar could channel his aggression properly at stoppages he'd become a more than useful player provided he can break even with the opposition ruckman around the ground

You're right. I mean we've only given him 6 seasons to develop. Why not offer him a couple more.

You're either stupid, or taking the [censored]. Probably the former.

He can take the grabs in the VFL but he has not the smarts to know how to use.

Hudson didn't get drafted til he was about 24 which is the same age as Jamar.

In 06 he (Jamar) played 20 games and was ahead of PJ in the side. Before last year PJ had played 11 games in 4 years, now people are saying he's definitely part of the best 22 and should be played ahead of White. Even then he only got games last year because Jamar broke his foot (albeit after being dropped).

There's still some light at the end of the tunnel but it's diminishing rapidly.

Great servant of the club but I'd like to see him retire at year's end, He's not part of the future and we've got some kids to blood in that position. Not to mention the possible draftees. It'd be great to see him retire at a solid ebb rather than clog our list.

He has had six years now what have you missed. Jeff White has deteriorated over the years since the time of Jolly's departure and Jamar is still in his shadow..but its a cloudy day!

We need to get a better ruck solution and White is not it.

Its a good reflection of how he has regressed in that time. PJ has been steady not brilliant. White has deteriorated markedly. They are all at varying levels of NQR and must be replaced.

It either a long tunnel or you have mistaken it for a train.

I don't rate Paul Johnson either. So get a new pinup boy to prove a point. Jamar is too slow, and as Rhino points out, a poor decision maker.

And you wonder why some want Naitanui and Warnock. I hope you've got a better grip on the Bombres.

It should be noted that there are heaps of examples of players who dominate in the VFL but that aren't up to it in the AFL. Poyas, Sautner... and Jamar and CJ can probably put themselves in there... So far.

I have actually seen some encouraging things from Jamar this season... The problem is, those things would be encouraging if he was about 21. But he's in his mid-twenties.... These are the years folks. And he would have to improve FOUR-fold for me to be confident in him as a starting ruckman.

PJ is probably the perfect back-up... But I worry about his credentials out of the guts for four quarters...

The issue here is that maybe we'll get Warnock and Naitanui, and neither of them are proven starting ruckmen either yet. I don't reckon Warnock is an improvement on PJ... So going by that we have Meesen, Spencer, White, Jamar, PJ... and then potentially Warnock and Naitaniu... We have to lose three of those.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
