Allen Jakovich left out of our Greatest 150?

While I agree Jakovich was the most freakish footballer I've seen play for us over my lifetime, his brilliance only lasted 3 years. Thus over there respective careers, I'd choose Lyon or others as the best I've seen.

And to compare those 5 goalkicking greats, you've got to look at the big picture, not just average goals per game as a standalone figure. If you do that, then there'd be an argument to say Darrren Cuthbertson was our best ever player after his first 2 league games, and should be in the Top 150.

Norm Smith: 210 games, 546 goals

Garry Lyon: 223 games, 423 goals

David Neitz: 306 games, 631 goals

Fred Fanning: 104 games, 411 goals

Allen Jakovich: 47 games, 201 goals

If he'd played 200 games, and kept that rate up, then he'd be a shoe-in to be in our top 150, but sadly Jaka's brilliance was a mere fleeting one, and thus doesnt deserve a slot in the Top 150 of all time

I thought that Jaka was cruelled by injury ?Back/Hamstrings. Others point to John Coleman (ESS) as a great but he only lasted as many games as Jaka (I think)

While their is no doubting Allen Jackovich,s football ability i have always found he wasnt a team player

Individual statistics may impress some people but the whole point of football is winning games and premierships

Teams win games not individuals

THE man they called "Strawbs" hasn't got the cream. has not made the Demons' top 150 list. O'Dwyer was influential enough to be club champion in Melbourne's 1988 Grand Final year.

O'Dwyer and three-time leading goalkicker Allen Jakovich will be the controversial omissions at tomorrow night's 150 Heroes Dinner at Crown casino.

It is understood at least six current players will be named.

Travis Johnstone, controversially traded to Brisbane at the end of last year, is also believed to be in the top 150.

Jakovich kicked 201 goals at Melbourne, but it understood he missed out, in part, because he played only 47 games for the club.

But O'Dwyer, nicknamed "Strawbs" because of his mop of red hair, played 84 games between 1987-91 and also represented Victoria.

John Northey, O'Dwyer's coach at his peak, was yesterday surprised that the tough ruckman had missed the cut.

Northey said O'Dwyer, rubbed out for the 1988 Grand Final, was sadly missed in the clash against the mighty Hawthorn.

"He was just a very big part of the whole side at that stage," Northey said.

"Just his strength, his vigour and his ability to contest everything was just enormous for the team. In '88, that didn't help us one little bit when he got suspended."

The Demons boast 1200 league players in their history, but selectors pruned the list to 250 before lopping it to 150.

The selection panel comprised past players Hassa Mann, Noel McMahen and Anthony McDonald, former chief executive Steve Harris, past board member Peter Dohrmann, Herald Sun chief football writer Mike Sheahan and club historian Lynda Carroll.

Jakovich's high-profile brother Glen recently said he was surprised at the cult figure's likely omission.

"He probably could have been top 20 in that list, ability-wise," Jakovich said.

The Heroes dinner will be the cornerstone of a massive weekend for Melbourne's 150th anniversary celebrations.

The function is already fully booked, with 1300 attending. The Demons have had to knock back several fans.

Melbourne will release a book simply titled Heroes on the night. It will profile each of the top 150 players.

At least 100 past players will be at Monday's Queen's Birthday clash with Collingwood.

They will gather from about 9.30am to walk to the MCG from Federation Square.

Supporters will be briefed and can hear David Neitz, Robert Flower and Guy Rigoni on stage from 10am.

Buskers will lead the crowd of fans and ex-players on the walk to the MCG from 11.30am.

Yes, and a few others who had higher goal averages than Lyon eg Darren Bennett, George Margatich

I just used a list of some doyens of the club.

Yeah, they played one position and one position only. Lyon played about 5, including alot of his early career at CHB, all australian in fact. Apples and oranges.

So its official.

No Jakovich.

And the article says 6 current players? Neitz, White and Yze will all be in there.

I have no idea who the other 3 will be. James McDonald is the only one that is close to being worthy.

Maybe current also means current from other clubs, ie Jeff Farmer.

Out of interest, how many players actually have played for our club? How many have played 50 games? 100 games?

Given the amount of players that we've had, given that it's a top 150 list, I think that having a requirement for games is a bit rich. I would estimate that there has been about 600-700 players play for us, so if that is true then 1/4 of the players who have ever played for us will make the list! Even if the number is about 900, that's 1/6 so clearly it's not really an exclusive club to be in, so therefore why is a games requirement really neccessary?

The other 3 will be Green, Bruce and Robertson. C'mon you know its gonna be Bruce and aren't game to say it! Or wait, maybe it'll be Colin Sylvia?

if the MFC are serious, there is no way that Green and Bruce will be named.

Robbo will sneak in I suspect.

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full
