2015 Player Review - # 4 Jack Watts
Bombay Airconditioning replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
On his skills set and footy smarts he is top 3 on our list.My friend who coaches under 16's TAC attends (or used to) AFL coaching clinics. Guest speakers have included names such as Clarkson, Longmire, Parkin, Pagan and Jumbo's favourites the Scott brothers. They were asked about what they look for when they are/were recruiting, their answers were pretty similar - natural competitors - elite disposal - footy smarts And they were in that order. They acknowledged that classier outside players were still required to win their own ball on occasions and lay a tackle/smother/shepherd. No doubt there will be an example of someone that doesn't fit that bill but that's what they were saying. They deemed footy smarts as being easiest to teach to a player. Where to run, where to set up, how to position your body etc.... You cannot teach someone to be a competitor, it's in them if it's not. The one i really disagreed with was it took some stupid amount of hours(I think he said a couple of hindered??) to change someone's kicking technique. But he was probably right, Franklin runs on a arc, Kennedy does the stutter step, both unorthodox but work. Cloke is still a mess. Set shots obviously different from in transition. -

I read between the lines with comments like those. He's up for trade, what else would he say. As for "you don't need every player to be combative", that may work until you reach the finals. But then again Nathan Ablett is a premiership player. With regards to where our list is we can't afford any passengers. -

2015 Player Review - # 6 Chris Dawes

At the time most of us were pleased to get him. Hasn't turned out how we would of liked. If Pedo/Frost are fit and depending on who we draft I've got not problem with him seeing out his contract as Casey. -

Not often but on this one we are on the same page. Would much rather Trenners given every chance then continue to carry players who will never rise above VFL level. Sadly for him even if he plays next year, after that he may always be considered a year by year proposition. The club it seems is taking the hard but fair line with everybody. -

Yeah, someone mentioned the other day he can still be bundled up in a trade. I'll have a look and see if I can find it. -

Jon Ralph....no interest from other clubs.... Ralph may be as credible as the next clown but has anyone heard anything linking Watts to another club? Remembering many think he will become a star upon changing. -
2015 Player Review - # 9 Jack Trengove

Great bloke, speaks well blah blah blah. No ones doubting that. We all want him back but lets not forget 12 months ago the club had him out the door. A year to prove himself. Footys tough these days. -

Petracca. -
Tmac falls under the "shizen to average" and is getting better. But his primary role as a defender is to take intercept marks which he does and spoil the ball which he does. If we were organised better and had Salem(he was injured for part of the year) and someone else with similar skill he would simply take the mark and handball off to one of our back flankers. I've said before key position defenders and ruck men aren't are probably the only exception to the "elite disposal when recruiting" rule.

And Grimes/Garland....

I posted in the contracts thread yesterday about what I call the "Trengove factor". Similar to last year players who think they're safe will/should be shopped around. If a suitor is found they tell the player that a club a potential deal looms and they have 24 hours to decided. If no suitor is found the player is unaware his name had been thrown up. Carrying passengers is bad enough but disgruntled passengers is another thing. By the end of trade 2016 all the garbage should be removed from our list. -
When someone is drafted, ideally they already have elite disposal. Those that have good disposal work with the skills coaches to try to improve to elite disposal. We already have enough players on the list that we read things like "his disposal has improved this year" which translates to "it gone from shizen to ok at times". Again I must be watching different games to most.

To elaborate (beyond a joke might be a bit harsh but let's remember he is playing AFL) his kicking is like The Princes, an up and under style with the ball often going over teammates heads or falling short or out of bounds. I found myself laughing out loud in disbelief watching him.
-
Living in Sydney I've watched a lot of GWS games. Natural competitor - Yes he takes the game on and as someone eluded to he has dash and dare. Footy smarts - He finds himself in the right places at times, when he has the ball he has the right intentions but see below.... Disposal - His disposal is diabolical, it's that bad it's beyond a joke. It's a no.

Currently not even standing up at Casey throughout the year.
