Saturday talking point: More attacking footy
Bombay Airconditioning replied to Whispering_Jack's topic in Melbourne Demons
I'm hoping this year we will start to see the balance between the two. To be honest I'm not sure that Roos has an attacking game plan that would stand up in today's game, having said that even if he did he didn't have the players to carry it out (being 2014/15). He's done an outstanding job in putting the list together. Whe he first arrived the place was a mess with very few leaders and a playing group that were largely without a clue. In Roos first two years as we know he stripped it all back getting back to basics and although it wasn't attractive football to watch he tried to minimise the losses. The transition to Goodwin has come at the right time, whilst we can't get too carried away with the win over Port there were some good signs. For the teams growth to continue we can not afford the gifting of game to anyone regardless of their age or contract status. Goodwin needs to be hard but fair but borderline brutal with the players so as not to allow them (the senior players) to snap back into their collective daydream. We now have the making of a competitive fwd line and are slowly building a team of skilled footballers who don't mind the contest, quick ball movement is the only thing missing from our game and as a result more goals and more wins should follow. -

Watching that reminds me of the time Jonathan Brown grabbed the bloke in a headlock from behind then flipped him to the ground and landed on top of him. He subsequently got off because he couldn't be charged with rough play as play had already stopped. -

The last Dees/Bombers game I went to was when Jordie was involved twice in our last passage of play which saw the ball ultimately fall into the hands of Salem who calmly slotted the goal. -

This game has already been marked as "Hammer Time". Are some getting worried by the fact they beat up on the other rabble? They are still to play Geelong and West coast away. Rd 1 they play the Suns away. We need to get physical with them before the opening bounce then pile on the goals as we steamroll them into the turf. Put 8 goals to zip on them in the first qtr, break them mentally. Are we forgetting they are largely kids and a few has beens thrown together. Dees by 89. -

It was a legitimate question as to why Grimes was in the rehab group. -

Isn't it funny no ones picked Geelong.... In no order North Hawks Freo Port Eagles A big part of last weeks win was the fact it was an interstate win. Normally we've conceded before we've boarded the plane.

What was more bizzare was the Suns taking Martin over Hogan. -
When's our day? We need to start challenging teams like Hawthorn and Freo this year and not wait for them to slide before its "our day"

As I've argued in the past in other threads, maybe not this year but definitely next year Jetta's position may/should be up for grabs to a midfielder who defensive game is the equal of Jetta's but offers more going the other way and can play on ball.

I'm leaning towards 4 mids/flankers on the bench. Going off last weeks game our three fwds at this stage are Hogan/Pedo/Watts, I'd like to see Frost given an opportunity over the next two weeks in defence then only one of Frost/Garland plays with Dunn, Tmac. If our other starting forwards are Garlett, Kent, VB our bench could be Petracca, Kennedy, Harmes, Oliver. I think some teams, the Bulldogs being one will try to capitalise on last year and run teams off their feet. If your no.1 ruck gets injured your stuffed anyway, if you loose a key defender a mid/flanker plays the third tall, and if you loose a fwd you play with a smaller fwd line. As DeeSpencer alluded to, just about every player needs to be able to play two positions.
