Nev has been with us for a few years and not show enough to demonstrate that he is going to make is to AFL level. redrafting him would be a waste of a spot where we could give another young kid a chance to make his mark.

I am sure nicholson knows what melbourne is doing and if they are keeping him on then the club obviously sees some potential in him, but given the lack of realisation of that potential in AFL games they may well move him back to a rookie. i would be surprised if they had not already discussed their plans for with him (whatever they are), as there is no benefit for the club to hold onto him so long if their intention was to delist him so late without taking him back as this would seriously penalise his chances of training with or being picked up by another team. Such treatment of a players would not go down well with the rest of the team. As for picking a smoky in Hunt, they obviously see something in him to take him above 50 or more other would be draftees, that does not make him a poor choice or mean the players after him are poor, MFC just rates him higher than the others and melbourne preferred to take him in the draft rather than risk of loosing him. We have 4 rookie slots open which we are probably going to fill, as such getting as many early picks will allow us greater choice. if we dont participate in the PSD and other teams will get first crack of the players in the draft, therefore reducing the talent pool we have to eventually choose from.

I wonder if they will be able to keep all those kids there, as they come out of contracts they will find a lot of clubs wanting to bring these kids home and offering their best $$'s that the GWS will have trouble matching. How many players like getting paid peanuts to play along side $cully watching him get him get a handful of possessions for $1m a year. At the moment GWS is able to trade some of these disgruntled kids for high draft picks that may not always be the case. It will be interesting to see if they can keep a settled side over the next 3-4 years.

Stats are not what they used to be these days with the amount of shared kick to kick and keepings off football that goes around.

We do need at least one more tall key defender.

They missed out on the main draft - PSD or rookie?

If the club has not delisted him already but plans to then they would have probably already negotiated that with him, so that he knows and has presumably agreed. otherwise he would be asking to be released so he can go into the draft, -
it would be a shame to waste our premier position in the PSD and miss a chance to get a jump on those other teams still willing to take psd's instead of rookies. Nicho onto the rookie list would still keep him at the club but also put him on notice that he needs to improve to stay.

is it just me or has this thread lost its way. -
So how many would prefer either Aish or Scharenberg to both Salem and Tyson? I am pretty happy with the trade.
-
Weller seems to have been able to pull some decent stats playing for GWS and now has a slightly more mature body than most of the 18 year old rookies. we would have to be a little crazy to not consider drafting him as a rookie if he is available.

clubs are putting in high altitude rooms so they can reap any benefits all year round.

I dont quite understand the hate towards tony abbott, the man has just taken over from one of the most inept governments around and is getting the blame for everything that happened on their watch. Take tony abbott out of the situation for and consider the facts. Indonesia have made it clear that we are not friends and that they dont really want to be friends, however they are happy to take $500m in aide and 000's of visitors to bali every year who inject hundreds of millions of dollars into their economy. This is the country that invaded east timor and who no qualms in killing australian journalists along with the east timorese, who were caught themselves spying or attempting to spy on the howard governement, a country that allowed bali bomber participants and terrorists to spend less time in jail than an australian woman with a surfboard full of weed. a government that relies on australia to steam hundreds of miles/kilometers to rescue asylum seekers 40k off their coast. who are now claiming they cannot maintain their search areas under international obligation so that will leave australia to pick up the slack. a country known for its corruption and instability including support / collusion with people smugglers and terrorist groups. Now that to me is a neighbor that needs watching or should we just continue to roll over and play dead and hope that they forgive us for our sins while they enjoy the benefits of their own.

Freeman does look good, the fact that collingwood has swapped to get an earlier pick has me worried that he is the one they are after.
-
Maverick Weller is looking for a new home and a couple of clubs are talking to him, anyone know our level of interest in him?
-
Oh hurry up and run the damn draft, I feel like a kid outside a lolly shop looking in the window trying to figure out what I will get with my 9cents. They really have to short this draft process next year, this is such a ridiculous waste of time.

I believe we need a strong rebounding half back line as well as mids, our current backline just does not have that at the moment. Giles certainly looks like he would fit into that bracket.

Any suggestions for our options in pre season draft (PSD)
Deecisive replied to Dees2014's topic in Melbourne Demons
If Gysbert had the goods he would have demonstrated that capability far more effectively and consistently during his time at two clubs AFL and associated VFL clubs. football is about a lot of things including application, drive, desire and things that Gysberts does not appear to have shown much of. If he has the grit and desire to succeed then go back to the VFL, SAFL, etc and prove your got the good and try to get picked up next week. -
Given nothing much has been able to get Silvia to produce his best for us consistently after 10 years and probably 10 coaches, its a big call to suggest that moving west will, but i think in time you may be right in that he will play better for freo, not sure he will play better or more consistently than Vince though. I suspect that Silvia will initially get even more complacent at the start with Freo, until he finds he is not getting games in the 1st, then we may start to see him apply himself.

Can we add Barrett to the list of censored words!

There is never going to be an equitable way of doing compensation that all will agree with. How do you value the players against each other to not only determine their ranking in draft tiers but against each other. How do you rate Buddy, Thomas, Del Santo, and other free agents against each other and come up with something that all fans are going to be happy with. What about the lousy compo some teams got last year. Just scrap the compo and be done with it, it will then be a level playing field for all, yes powerful clubs will still attract the best, but they cannot always afford to pay the best to every player. Players still have the option of not signing and throwing themselves into the draft if they cannot come to terms with their club so is free agency all that much different, i.e. if mitch decided he wanted the leave the dees at the end of his contract he could walk, no compo. Also poorer clubs usually have more room in their salary cap to attract, and lets face it money does attract.
-
He may not have wanted to talk to us before, now that we have the 3V's who knows he may see there is going to be far better opportunity with Melbourne than Collingwood financially, and possibly opportunity in getting game time as well, as he may find it harder to break into the Collingwood lineup than ours. Though I am not sure he is the player Roos and co want though. They seem to have a player or swap in mind with our number 9 pick as they seemed to think the player they actually want in the draft would probably still be available for our no 9 pick, which means they have a specific target instead of trying to take what many think is just the best. We still have the rookie draft, free agency and PSD draft to come so there will probably need to be some more list changes coming up to make room.
-
he seemed to be in high demand so he decided to shoot for the moon, now that he is scaring all of the would be suitors away he will need to either come down in price or find himself a new hobby for the weekends. Only the GWS would waste that much on a one to two year player.
-
I disagree Gonz, I think Chappy would certainly add a lot of bite in the forward line with all our talls, that may make the difference between winning 4-6 games and winning 8 or more. winning games next year will make us a more attractive destination for other players in next years free agency and draft, it also means when chappy goes we free up some $$. We already have trouble spending our cap money now, I would rather see it go to a one or two year player like chappy than front loading players salaries. No player is going to want to go backwards in salary once our cap starts to tighten, I wonder if we have front loaded any of those players who we let go, i.e. morton and co.
-
Carlton is linked to just about everyone, they still trying to get shaw and chappy and ... and ... and... they cannot afford everyone. Also as pointed out Mich needs to decide if he wants to be satisfied with hoping he can get a game with Carlton to actually playing every week with Melbourne. His future earning capacity will be based on his next couple of years performance and that will not increase too significantly if he is still playing in the blues vfl side because old man juddy and co keep him out.
-
Savage will be thinking about the competition at the blues to hold a mid field spot, it will not be easy. He is leaving a very successful club for that reason, so it must give us a slight edge in that regard at least.
