Roos + Lyon - On The Couch
Having read the range of explanation /accusations (many of which supported and added to my own) your initial comment has resonated most powerfully and generated a different approach. We really need two teams in our squad. One which can play the high pressure, high contact, chaos style of finals and one which can play a more conservative, tempo based slow, precise delivery. Both squads are then selected with some overlapping to match up against the game plan of a specific opponent. oh and both squads should practice kicking goals until it is instinctive that inside 50 you kick it between the big sticks.

Yeah agree but do not think fringe players want to be fringe players. There arè so many aspects which impact but communication is the most important.

Thanks Rusty. id agree from the few occasions I've seen him, I noted he was too hesitant. I put this down to him not adjusting to pace of the game from not enough exposure. I was impressed that he got into space although not always rewarded for that, again saw that as a positive. Haven't noticed the lack of inside50 marking, but could be a consequence of being ignored when in space while we bomb it in to packs. Not all players are or need to be chaos type players. Yes could be a could depth option but I would be hesitant if not played regularly enough in the ones. Do you know where he trains? Is it with Casey or the ones? I have stated before that training may need to concentrate on greater intensity to match the game day situation. Perhaps desperation for a place in the ones may produce that intensity and make instinctive the confidence to take on the game and take better options.

The AFL wants to reduce tackling
Excessive tackling maybe occurring as there is no reward for a tackle result. No free for incorrect disposal, no free for holding it. A tackle can be ignored so players with the ball do and causes the rolling scrum that he wants to eliminate. Players can be swung around and even around again in a tackle and no free so tackles seem to be a feature as they are committed for a longer period. players reactions are faster and tackles are applied more quickly and some players are assigned to close down so more tackles occur. pay the free for an incorrect tackle, especially in the back, and tackles might be reduced. Perhaps a free for gang tackles would also eliminate the stoppages and allow the ball to be released. granting frees would initially slow the game down but as players adapt and reduce the occurrence, less frees would be paid an the game would flow.

It seems Billy Stretch doesn't exist for you as well as the coach.

Jack Viney's Kicking
Perhaps that burst is what is affecting delivery. Forwards structure for a short release and instead have a burst kick sail over their heads.

Jack Viney's Kicking
Another great observation that can be backed up by data analysis. Hope the coaches are on to it. The response is that this encouragement should be concentrated on at training. Alternatives are for others to protect him and allow him to get on left or for patterns to be established for left foot delivery. Game time is not the best place to experiment with these changes.

Midfield strength
Agree with all you say.Would add that Lewis placement and distribution is often outstanding. Perhaps his role as coach assistant can be better utilised in passing these attributes on . Saw comment that Roughie had given advice in VFL to a Doggies player who had been more effective since then. Habits learned at VFL level can become instinctive and valuable. If Lewis style is what Goody wants perhaps he might be better placed there.

Jack Viney's Kicking
Great work LordNev. If this data is available to you, coaches should also have it. We are all aware of this action but I did not know my observation was so supported by fact. Do his kicks fall short or are they longer than other entries. More analysis may be worthwhile. The question is what to do, get Viney to dish the ball off, get someone to protect him with a shepherd, ( a better balance and more time for accurate delivery), get forwards to respond differently when Jack distributes. Perhaps if he sews to the left then forwards move that way. keep up the good work.

The old straight arm block - The Gawn rule.
Have to be written inadequately in order to allow inconsistent interpretation.

Midfield strength
I reckon the biggest problem is our disposal is often done when we are off balance. Part of this is that no shepherding is occurring to make aand protect space. An initial release is made and no shepherd or attempt to stop the receiver being tackled.

Brilliant. That's the most obvious example that should be given when MFC engage the umpires adviser (whatever) to ask what is wrong with our existing game style where we do not attract any benefit from our tackles, are not afforded any protection from head high tackles, do not appear to have backs and give away free kicks for similar actions that are made against us. We do not seem to benfefit when we are in front and do not benefit when we are behind. We seem to give away holding free kicks while not receiving the same consideration ourselves. Play on calls are made as soon as we step off the line while our opponents are frequently shepherded back on line before that call is made. i am sure a comprehensive recording of examples of all above from any game could be provided as examples. Its not the umpires fault it's ours but we need to let them know we are aware of these game changing actions.

POSTGAME: Rd17 vs Bulldogs
Good point bing. It's the coaches job to instill that confidence. While the player has to and is the only one who can earn it the coach must be able to ensure the aspects of selection inspire confidence. Through both pre, during and post game the coach needs to overcome the negative thoughts of all teammates of themselves and others.. I reckon the way we continue to win the ball and keep playing despite umpiring howlers is proof the Goodwin has worked ok on the team confidence. The way individuals miss shots at goal, handpassesetc is perhaps more of an individual lack of confidence. From that perspective the comment on Tracs high five before failing could perhaps be justified.

Petracca's set shot kicking
Seems reasonable commentary that has been consistently made. I am not an expert in kicking technique but have seen this comment made not only about Trac who I agree has been one of our best and who I think could become one of our and the games greats. However his regular missing of what appear easy shots not only mar his game but also affects the confidence of the whole team. I think we have all seen how taking these opportunities lift the whole team. i just ask is there anything being done to address this problem, or to provide a response that shows it is not a factor.

POSTGAME: Rd17 vs Bulldogs
I would like to see the player handpassing, rovide a shepherd. i guess I would like to see any of our players shepherding a teammate. Shepherding creates or makes space to allow the person with the ball or the one most likely to get it have time to get balanced. i am aware that we may be likely to be penalised so would call the umpires in to have a discussion about our techniques.

Footscray v Casey Demons - Round 15
We seem to always kick the ball high so opponents get plenty of time to number up.

Commentator. Big call. Instead of a free kick going forward it goes the other way and a goal"

Footscray v Casey Demons - Round 15
We are bad enough in our own efforts that we do not need the umpires ignoring our free kicks and playing the same offence against us. To be still in it at3/4 is amazing. First goal crucial.

Footscray v Casey Demons - Round 15
Yep? It's a pity he didn't progress. Confidence is probably the biggest overlooked factor. i have been saying that when you get no consideration from the umpires and when the action you take is penalised or not rewarded by the umpires confidence is eroded. its the coaches job to recognise that confidence factor and take action. We we need to speak with the umpires body and find out what is wrong with our techniques. Hope you can help him get his confidence back and show us how good he could really be.

Round 17 Non MFC Games
Maybe the conversation Bucks had with the umpires at the start might have been to confirm the odds were in the favour of a close result. Oh and a magpie payout would be more beneficial.
