Which MFC players do you leave out of the hub
First thing would be to ask the players and only include those that want to win. Anyone not interested would need bloody good reason. But I tend to agree with Earl that the hub idea may be irrelevant.

Coronavirus: AFL & MFC
Thais Bing for a European view. it truly is a global pandemic and it does appear outcomes (deaths ) are really variable. I have been saying the term cases really says nothing as the variables between data collection and cultural and societal practices is enough to make modelling useless. We still have little information on actual depth of the problem as we have no idea how many people had mild symptoms and have never reported as a case. It is also amazing that we have had few reports of transmission from supermarkets and hardware stores which are open . A sizeable proportion is related to the one boat Border Force failed to stop and health workers who are front line workers who were so devoted they failed to isolate some when they had symptoms. its certainly a tricky business. I have proposed that we in Australia can perhaps create Economic Activity Zones, where controlled activity can be formed around a centre with a major health centre and accommodation for isolation if necessary. This is similar to a hub but needs all services and support operating within the Zone with careful testing of anyone moving into the zone. Perhaps I've been isolated too long myself. They say mental health issues are increasing.

Thanks for comment DJ. Not sure that I agree with myself at the moment. Find myself yelling at the TV and some of the comments. It's good to be able to find refuge in the occasional replays that are highlighted by a knowledgable demonland population. We have some way to go apparently. But as I look at the empty streets in Beechworth and see the Beechworth Bushrangers being unable to train when there is absolutely no indication of the virus having been evidenced within our NE area is frustrating. If we increased our testing we might find that we are able to return to some normal activities.

Coronavirus: AFL & MFC
We are not immune. We are part of the world. However we are unique in that we have a border that we can control. We also have witnessed a very compliant community. We also have more dispersed population with discrete centres of density. With our cultural and social habits of close community relationships we also had internal tracking. But most importantly we had a health system which was also dispersed and with a culture of collegiate and community commmunication. We also had a more egalitarian population with less vulnerable and unsupported sectors. While our health system had been allowed to be degraded and was considered under resourced it was still way ahead of every other country. The virus was/is a health issue and that is where we should have concentrated responses. That lockdowns and distancing were adopted from that expert advice was another factor in our success. But the economic impacts are not all caused by the virus. These impacts are the consequence of government action. The politicians have chosen to close down economic activity and have caused confusion through contradictory action. Why a hairdresser and even supermarkets are exempt is unfathomable. How many transmissions have come from these sources. The social changes being undertaken by the government are economic decisions they are not caused by the virus. We could have invested more heavily in testing, tracking isolating and treating without closing down every community and every ectivity. The government is using his crisis as a huge data collection exercise. With an approval for a huge budget allocation which it will be able to allocate as easily as sports grants this is an opportunity for this government to undertake and entrench ideological action. It is not the virus causing this it is the deliberate political practice. We definitely need to improve our health system. We need to increase our testing and tracking procedures. Education needs greater coordination and consistent practice. Perhaps a health nurse in schools might be a better investment than a chaplain. Our Child care and aged care systems need more resources. As the drought, bushfires and now this pandemic have shown we need a strong central government. This does not mean we need dictatorial and undisputed power application. We do not need more division and less government we need a more representative structure. Border closures and the current divisions of state populations is not required. We are all in this together and yet we are creating and celebrating in many cases the differences. While we have time to reflect deeply on these matters we can also appreciate the role that sports has played in our society. Perhaps as a demons supporter I have become too inured to defeat to lead an uprising.

Grand Final Guarantee Payment in a Compromised Season
I reckon you might have provided the answer yourself. If MFC play in a grand final this year, however tinged with asterisks and comment, I reckon you would not forgive yourself if you didn't go. And then you would probably front up for the next real grand final next year. If you don't want use your ticket I'd be happy to accept it. These are strange and unusual times but every club will still want to win. In fact this asterisked year could prove to be more of a memorable and significant year than most. I would ignore any caveats of opposition supporters etc and merely respond that a win is a win. I'd also use it as a spur to our players to write themselves into the history books . This is the beginning of a decade of dominance. Seize it and go. GO DEES.

Military armed? Some states and territories are really ensuring Collingwood supporters are kept out. Seriously, it is really necessary to keep indigenous communities free of another disease for which they have no resistance. Keep up the security.

Weren't the territory govt (and federal) concerned about keeping the virus out of vulnerable communities. Very tight control imposed to ensure safety.

1964 and all that ...
Me too do. Had the 29 on my jumper but I think I got it from a friend of my old man. I think Bluey Adams was his neighbour and he followed Melbourne and was happy that I didn't follow dads saints. But the story would only make sense if Bluey came from Mornington where this all happened to the best of my recollection..

Coronavirus: AFL & MFC
Surely if players are tested, the latest tests give results in an hour, they can be maintained in a clean environment for that hour before engaging in close contact. Associated staff etc would also be tested. problems with water bottles and items which may be unclean would then be the only problem. Once we have positive test results at low levels the health system can handle their management. Anyone with negative result can be part of a crowd. Anyone testing positive and mingling with crowd is subject to very heavy fine including murder charge if someone dies due to being infected..

Hawthorn Demons
At Dallas Brooks Ridley was strident in his demand that there be a merger. Bill Guest and "the suits" had the numbers and were arrogant and dismissive in their confidence. Brian Dixon and Joe Gutnick had the passion and the simple response to Ridleys comment that the board had tried to get support from everyone. The simple line "you didn't ask me" and his presentation of a plan completely blind sided the board and the overflowing crowd were rapturous in their support. Ridley had the numbers and won the night but lost the fight. This meeting established divisions that soured the club for years and created an impression that was often displayed on the field. Confusion and disconnect were traits that have been carried on to this date. We need to acknowledge this blight and spur the current generation to display the best attributes of a united cohesive club that will reap the success it deserves.

Given the current situation with borders between our states, police action against people taking driving lessons or eating kebabs on benches, etc, State premiers thanking those adhering to direction but exhorting citizens to follow these rules and a PMwho just states "stop it just stop it" to acknowledge people not acting in accordance with his desires, we are heading close to a similar charge.

I cannot give the absolute commendation to a mob that has continuously shown incompetence at every stage of its desperate reactions. They rushed to use Christmas Island which was a reasonable response initially and then allowed people to enter the border with liittle oversight or control. They could not appreciate the importance of stopping the most important boat. They instigated an economic crisis with no idea that Centrelink would be overwhelmed. The on line networks which had previously struggled are now being overwhelmed. They allowed hairdressers to operate but few others . They are allowing confusion and fear through discretionary action. They have allowed states to isolate themselves and promoting differences while saying we are all in this together. They have approved a large amount of money to fund programs for 6 months with little oversight . They have not indicated how these funds will be generated.. Free child care for 6 months is fine but what will happen at the end of that time. There has been no indication how our football club will be able to continue after their (the governments) action. There may ell be a heap of money left over if restrictions are eased earlier than 6 months as our health system capacity is lifted to cope with a health problem that is controlled through control and testing of incoming people., testing and tracking emerging admissions, and isolating at risk sectors. Perhaps the money left can be allocated to significant blue areas that do give them absolute commendation. Their may be some merit in your suggestion.

I will try and do that as well if we ever return to the redlegs room. i have often appreciated your contributions and reckon we could now both enjoy a Furphys.

Was going to ignore but having had a lie down believe you need further response. while I may be being hysterical, my comments are based on some in depth knowledge and experience. I have retired but the circumstances of this crisis are providing new and different responses. I am concerned that we now have accepted border guards and police oversight as an accepted normal. Gatherings of more than 2 are illegal. And we are told this is to occur for a further 6 months. Extraordinary.

Thanks AM. There was a touch of frustration in my rant, induced by the imposed isolation. I happy to comply as I said the govt has done some good things especially buying time, to overcome the reduced health and research capacity. I still think they have been applying models that do not take into account our different cultural and social practices. i was surprised how compliant the population has been but it has certainly helped. There is yet to be an end game announced and I do wonder where it will come from.

Too late see previous response. I only referred to cases and it's meaningless. Our government has done some things well with the hand it was holding. The run down health system, the reduced research and internal manufacturing and production capacity which affected supply, its own delusion of its economic position with an arrogance of its ideological stance made for the crisis we are now in. We are far down the track and have bought time at a cost which has also been confected. The government did not appear to know that Centrelink would be overwhelmed. "My bad " Minister recognised his incompetence again but we continue to stumble forward. Knee jerk reactions maintaining fear, with discretionary exemptions. Why oh why were hairdressers exempt and how will they resolve the contradiction of school attendance. What will happen to the free child care at the end of the magical mythical 6 months. Where is any of the income for this expenditure coming from. The hated labor initiated superannuation is already being further destroyed. its no wonder bottle shops are booming

I did work in the health industry when we had an infectious diseases hospital which was basically empty awaiting the next outbreak. Laboratories were filled with world renown scientists who kept abreast of techniques to respond quickly to any threats. We also had epidemiologists who were alert to tracking and testing techniques to undertake to provide accurate information. We also had a National laboratory capable of isolating large numbers of people. For a variety of reasons these facilities were allowed to deteriorate and the expertise dispersed. Unfortunately this health crisis was not responded to with resources provided to the health system including utilising the private systems resources which have only lately been recognised. Cases is a confected device as it only relates to those tested. It does not relate to any total population figure. Testing was compromised by the availability and reliability of kits. Cases was queried when they came out of China as unreliable. Selective testing will yeild different outcomes. Testing 200 on a cruise ship will yeild a different result from 200 tests in remote WA. And of course increasing or reducing total tests will yeild different numbers of cases. More meaningfulwould be the total number tested the number of cases infected, the number displaying symptoms, the number admitted, the number discharged, the number to ICU and the number dead. You are correct that no government tanks an economy for fun. This government was already overseeing an economy which was failing. It was not in the black and debt was at record levels despite their delusion. They displayed their incompetence by issuing economic stimulus policy then the next day closing down most economic activity. This government has not tanked the economy for fun but it is incompetent and acting out of desperation. It has done many things well but it adopted a model out of that desperation that has many unknowns. As a random poster I also don't have the resources and knowledge to provide any reassuring end game. I am concerned that the scientists may be operating in isolation and social distancing which will delay the progress of collegiate, transparent and robust discussion and debate. Some internet systems can improve communication but it is notable that at every stage of our societal development conferences and gatherings were always utilised to consolidate findings. Not concerned at your foolish response. Complex ideas need a forum to debate and refine detail in a perhaps more rational and articulate fashion. I perhaps have not added to that process and am happy to retreat.

We have never had the full pictureDD. Cases is the most meaningless and confected term in this whole crisis. That our leaders political and medical have then used this as the basis for modelling has meant what was a medical crisis was expanded to an economic crisis. It is now being used to effect ideological change.
