Great win by the girls but can the umpires pay free kicks when they're there (I realise this is rant number 2) instead of this AFL rules- lite they seem to be adopting. Daisy nailed a girl in possession as she went to kick late in the fourth. It could not have been more text book and obvious but, of course, not paid and play on. Am I missing something?- 48 replies

Demons to play 'Fearless Football': Goodwin
Return to Glory replied to Lucifers Hero's topic in Melbourne Demons
To be fair to Neeld, having no discernible game plan probably made it hard for opposition teams to work out what the hell was going on. -
The AFL have shot themselves in the foot here. Two weeks for knocking an opponent out leaves them absolutely nowhere to go. You could smash an elbow into the back of an opponents head and if she's not concussed expect a week tops. A player can now ko an opponent and challenge anything over three weeks reduced to two. Big mistake when you consider they are trying to appeal to the next generation of girls (and nervous mums)

Watered down umpiring and watered down penalties probably don't help promote the comp

So you would basically need to murder your opponent to get seven weeks, 6 with an early plea

Garland out, Paxman in.

There's no doubt in my mind that the Collingwood team we saw tonight is crying out for a coaching succession plan -

CB, it had to go beyond one umpire. There were just too many non - decisions. A win's a win but... -

I've got to say, if the AFL is going to televise and promote the game, ensure the fundamental rules of the game are enforced .i.e illegal disposal and caught in possession. I'm sure the top women don't appreciate the 'go soft on the rules' approach adopted tonight. Go Dees -
2017 AFL National Draft prospects: The next batch

Yes, it's only fair that GWS get another three top ten players next year and retain the Albury region. FMD, could the competition get any more uneven? -

Everyone needs a 'told you he'd be a star' and I'm selecting Dion. Our new Aaron Davey/ Serial pest hybrid. Unless, of course, he's a dud in which case I knew he wouldn't cut the mustard. -
AFLW Round 1 - Melbourne V Brisbane

This may well be contradictory: I really am excited by what the Women's League can become, particularly as younger, more talented players come through. The indications are that it will as participation grows. However, the standard of the matches I saw was putrid and I can't help feel they have formed too many teams too quickly. On more than a few occasions I heard commentators mention that 'it's her first/third/fifth game of football' and the selection of a player was based on little more than fitness or excelling at basketball or soccer. The games generally reflected this. -
