  1. 2007 - Rioli over Morton at this stage but just don't know what will happen ... Rioli might burn brighter for a shorter time while Morton could be a good player over 12+ years. Grimes was the bargain of the year. 2008 - Hurley may turn out to be the best allround player from that year but Watts is what we needed at the time and will be for many years to come. 2009 - Trengove has already vindicated his selection at 2... while Scully has shown glimpses of his best and should prove in coming years to be the right choice. Gysberts looks at least the equal of any taken after him.
  2. When fit Wonna is in our best fowardline set up as the small crumbing type. He has better goal sense than Bennell/Jetta/Maric and a much better tackler than Bennell/Maric. It all depends on him staying fit and limiting his soft tissue injuries. It would be a sin for us to axe him when we have carried so many others for years with ongoing injuries with far less up-side(Bell, Rivers, Meesen, PJ)
  3. Lets not get carried away Choko... we are terrible on the road & Freo will want to bounce back hard after going down to lowly Tigers side. I am expecting us to push them for a full 4 quarters and not just roll over and get thumped like so many other interstate games. I can't believe Harvey considers Headland to be in their best 15 players. Maybe its because I don't like Headland but I thought he would be a depth player now that only gets a game when they have injuries. Headland has never delivered on the promise of his draft pick or form at Brisbane with the help of the fab 4.
  4. PJ plays like the smallest big man in the game. Agree with having an extra running player... especially if its Bail who has been sorely missed. Agree with Martin being a better option if we must have a 2nd ruck... at least he can mark over his head (has PJ covered) and an ok kick and skillful enough to do the following... clap his hands and chew gum at the same time (has Spencer covered forever).
  5. Yep saw it live and on the replay. Jetta definitely meant it and should get at least 1 week because that is a dog act and dangerous
  6. Green is just a class act... on and off the field. Hard at the contest with poise and skill. Has plenty of footy smarts and helps bring his team mates into the game. Classic example today with him just leaning into his opponent (protecting the space and not giving away a free kick) and allowing the ball to hit the deck for Jurrah to run onto the ball and kick a goal. Pure class.
  7. No sympathy for the bombers at all... we have had to deal with that kind of treatment from the umpires for years. Their supporters still think its the good old days with the untouchables Hird and Lloyd running around. It was great sitting with a couple of bomber mates listening to them squeal about every decision that went against them while I had a massive grin on my face. The entire 2nd half all I could hear from every bomber supporter around me was the cry of "fifty" and bitching like little kids. That was before they started leaving 5 mins into the last quarter. Great day.
  8. Bartram's role is to make all other backmen look like a good kick He has actually played some good defensive games and improved on his last few seasons... but you are correct in saying he gives us very little run out of defense. I think he is just warming the small defenders role for a few years until a Blease or possibly Tappscott (or somebody yet to be drafted) comes along and makes it their own. I think Wellman/coaches got it right with Frawley on Milne. Frawley should play on the most dangerous forward no matter what size or shape they are.
  9. 3 biggest blowouts post football career. 1st = Long 2nd = Kickett 3rd = Pickett (probably forgetting somebody) Long in front only because he was so slight during his career where the other 2 were bigger frames to start with.
  10. Have heard a theory that the briefcase contained MW's soul that he was trying to buy back from the devil.
  11. That sounds remarkably like the famous Carey/Archer incident
  12. Pretty sure we were playing finals in 2004,'05 & '06 and thought we had a fair chance at a flag in those years considering Port, Sydney and WC were the eventual premiers(no super dominant team like the current Geelong team). There was no rebiuld going on at the time so getting rid of 3 of your better players for a tilt at the 2013 flag (8 years later) would be considered crazy at the time. On second thought ... maybe it would have been the most long sighted master stroke of all time. Hindsight is always 20/20
  13. With our limited kicking options Garland is the best kick with his range and ball speed through the air. He doesn't seem to get picked off as much and usually gets it to the intended recipient. The problem with him (and everybody besides Davey) is that he lacks the vision or confidence to hit a target between the zoning defenders. If there isn't a free player near the boundary (boundary side of the oppostion) then he just goes long to Jamar who is at best in a 50/50 marking competition. The problem is that clubs are now aware of this and watch Jamar and get numbers around him. Davey should take the kickins if he is inside 50 when the behind is conceded... which includes everytime opposition have a set shot because he has time to get back. He has the accuracy and the self belief to go short through the middle of the zone (in between players) and can then run past for the handball and kick beyond the next line. There are just too many times we get trapped in our defensive half and concede multiple behinds from attacking waves before giving up a goal through frustration.
  14. 180 cm from memory so doesn't have height.... but he is solidly built and might be one of those players who play taller than they actually are. Think in a few seasons he will look like Josh Hunt with a the same long kick on him(only right footed).
  15. Not taking sides in this argument (more out of boredom waiting for the soccer) but I think we showed determination for a full 4 quarters against the Pies(round 2), Lions and the Doggies...Pies last 3 qtrs, North 3rd qtr, Crows for 2 qtrs(round3), Carlton 3rd qtr & Port 3.5 qtrs. The rest of the time we have been pretty insipid and lucky to not get blown away.
  16. Expect is a tricky word to use because of the remaining games I only 'expect' to beat Richmond. Given our up and down season I believe we will pull off an upset or two on the run home. Ess, Syd and North at home are 50/50 and all very winable... but these are the types of games we have performed the worst in all year. If we were playing Freo, Port and Bris at the MCG I would put them into the 50/50 category... but playing them away turns all 3 into heavy losses. At this stage I would be happy with 3 wins... which would give us 7.5 and about where I predicted at the start of the year.
  17. Really need the skipper back in there. The entire midfield non-existent until 3rd quarter. Davey looks great when the ball is being won by the inside mids, but on days like today he should go into the backline and get those easy kicks running around behind the player so he can set up plays and create movement.
  18. Grimes gets treated like royalty around here. I know he has only played about 20 games and he has many good attributes but he has some big deficiencies to work on. Sometimes I think he is better off using his left foot everytime because his right just lacks penetration and just hangs up in the air waiting to get picked off. If he is going to play that sweeper role across half back he needs to eliminate these turnovers that often result in goals to the opposition. He also has poor accelleration off the mark and poor awareness of what is behind him... all year I have noticed that he has been run down or caught off guard when playing on. Plenty of improvement left in him yet.
  19. Bate did well to kick 4 from limited opportunities. That is all.
  20. Initially I thought this was a joke when the link didn't work and I saw it was a rookie poster with Cam Bruce as his favourite player ... but checked the heraldsun website and it is legit. Great news ... would imagine the Russian and his manager would have pocketed a massive pay increase... and with good reason. Well played gentlemen!
  21. When you hear the word 'thug' you think of players like Barry Hall, Brereton or Matthews... players that belt blokes behind play or go out of their way to inflict pain. I don't think Fletcher fits in this category but he is definitely a dirty player. I read somewhere that he has now gone to the tribunal 17 times in 18 seasons for tripping, kneeing, kicking (all multiple times) & goal post shaking. He has the wrap sheet of a 10 year old girl. The only thing he hasn't been cited for is pulling hair & being a tattle tale
  22. Stats... "works 60% of the time, everytime".
  23. Why forget Darwin? It was a win in unfamiliar territory... it doesn't matter that it was our home game on paper because Port has played there alot more than us. Its basically the same as us beating Sydney at Manuka... which would be regarded by most as a very good achievement and an interstate win. And I still don't expect us to beat the Crows in Adelaide. It is definitely our best chance in many years but will anyone honestly be surprised if we lose.
  24. what about incorrect disposal? is that a rule or just a term that is used.
