Who doesn't love Jesse...but we are (trying to be) a football club not a fairytale club. Damaged goods, buyer beware.
-
It was a nice win against a side with some class, but don't forget that they are a side that dropped their skipper and made 8 changes. Some young players showed promise. I look forward to next week and the bradbury plan continuing

As a CEO and given we are still in season, he really can't really do anything but back his people. I was interested to note that we could start work on a home base right now, if we were not being particular about a location in the Shadow of the MCG. I think this is the right approach. I thought he was less than convincing when the host asked whether Goodwin would be coaching Round 1 2021. A simple 'yes' would have sufficed, even if he had to reneg on it later. And jeez, he really does sound like Robert Walls.

If you think we are a top 4 list, then of course we are mentally weak. But the reality is that we have a mid-table list with low footy IQ, bad foot skills and relative inexperience. On any given weekend we have a less than 50% chance of beating top 4 teams, 50-50 chance of beating teams between 5 and 14, and a better than 50% chance of beating the cellar dwellers. Pretty much how it's panned out this year. ?♂️. If we win 2 out of our last 3 games we will have done very well.

What they're saying down at Linton Street
BillyBeane replied to Queanbeyan Demon's topic in Melbourne Demons
Wow. Almost as good as Tim Membrey's record against us. Extrapolated over a 22 game season that's 64 goals. Membrey's almost a coleman Medalist vs us. -
The side is still chronically short of leadership and footy IQ. A recruit similar to what we had in Jordan Lewis or what Luke Hodge did at Brisbane is worth considering. Is a player of this type available?

Windy Hill 1990 A Famous Afternoon
BillyBeane replied to Sir Why You Little's topic in Melbourne Demons
No worries. It's a great listen! I was only a kid but i remember reading the match reports and seeing Simon Madden whinging about having stud marks all over him. O'Dwyer lost two teeth and had six stitches as a result of the clash: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/122299343 -

Steve O'Dwyer and Madden really go at it. Knees and studs up! Incidentally there is a really great podcast that came out this week - Darren Bennett goes into some detail about this game: https://omny.fm/shows/the-greatest-season-that-was-93/darren-bennett-the-all-star -
Was it just me or did Preuss look like a pretty decent ruckman?

"Tactically Melbourne have become a side that backs in their system and does not make many adjustments during a game." ...Or over 4 years (being slightly facetious)

Current Team Potentially Best in 50 Years
BillyBeane replied to Dees2014's topic in Melbourne Demons
1998 was a lost opportunity, in something like the last 8 weeks leading up to the 1998 prelim, either Lyon, Schwarz, Neitz or Farmer kicked at least 5 goals in each game... In the prelim all we had was single goalkickers. Anyway looks like cabin fever has set in with this thread lol -
McCartin - should we consider recruiting him ??

We've got enough B-graders. -

I just woke up from a 15 year coma, who did we get instead?

Hope Geelong fans went easy on you during #186! -
Lucky we didn't get him...didn't we self report salary cap breaches between 1995-98!! Matera wouldn't have come cheap!

"Despite having been given an unexpected week off by virtue of the West Coast/Collingwood draw, the Demons entered the match against the Eagles with troubles. Garry Lyon missed the match after being collected heavily by Steve O'Dwyer in a Thursday night training mishap." http://demonwiki.org/Semi+Final+1990 Oh Strawbs ?
-
The Hawks also got lucky with Zoning and basically had a state team ...and it's never gone away!
-
I dared to watch the a replay of the 1987 Prelim...Jim Stynes actually gives away at 15m penalty earlier in the game, and in the Final quarter John Kennedy of the hawks is awarded a goal when the ball seems to miss/hit the post (same one Ricky Jackson hits 1 year later interestingly enough)

Yep, if you watch any of the highlights of 87 onward, you really come to admire what a smart footballer Brett Lovett was. Very underrated league-wide. I think Jeff White is completely underrated as a ruckman too, in my opinion a far more complete a footballer than Gawn or Stynes. Could kick, mark, brilliant tapouts. I'd argue he's almost the best ruckman of his era.

That 1990 SF was definitely an opportunity lost, but the Eagles were also on their way up. This didn't help - according to Demon wiki: " Garry Lyon missed the match after being collected heavily by Steve O'Dwyer in a Thursday night training mishap." http://demonwiki.org/Semi+Final+1990

Is there some controversy about the circumstances in which we let him go (to Fitzroy initially I believe)
-
I remember him kicking some absolute monster goals from the centre square. He was better from the longer distances than the shorter ones I reckon! David Schwarz was an excellent kick for goal too. Adem Yze the best user of the football that I've seen in Demon colors (never saw robbie)
