You will never win games with defenders that can't defend.
-
We lost contested ball 3 times I believe for 2018. We have lost it 3 times already in 2019; 5 if you count JLT. No point in having fleet footed wingers if you don't win the ball.

Omac and Frost: Premiership Kryptonite
jnrmac replied to At the break of Gawn's topic in Melbourne Demons
Mrs McDonald must be getting sick of trying to defend him... It was obvious 3 years ago our defence was terrible and OMac wasn't going to makeit. Has no attributed as a footballer other than his disposal is quite neat. 5 touches agains Ess, 2 in effective, zero marks and 1000 fumbles + over-running the ball. Number of times he let players fal out the back 327. As next to useless as a footballer as you could ever be. Zac Dawson would cream him. -
No, never.
-
How's that defence working for you @binman? 30 shots at goal from 54 entries for 20 goals. Your poster child OMac going to be AA this year? they can't hide him any more.
-
So they say. It remains to be seen. And two of the main players are dead. Gutter journalism at its finest. No one gives a flying 10 years on.
-
Yeah yeah Mrs Oscar. We were 9th last year from memory for defence. You are seriously deeluded about our defensive capabilities: 4 entries for 4 goals in the third quarter in 10mins. Great effort. If we were soooo great in defence why have they spent a fortune to get Lever and May?
-
Shaun Higgins is the type of player we should target. Strong, quick, accumulator, elite foot skills, wins his own ball and not expensive.
-
Baker did his hamstring around August 4 2018. Hardly 'pre-season'. Should be primed by now.

Is Inside 50 Dominance now a Strategy to Exploit?
jnrmac replied to Lou C. Fur's topic in Melbourne Demons
Geelong in this game also had 20 shots on goal (80pts) from 24 entries into their fwd 50. We don't seem to have learnt a lot since then. or at least our defence hasn't -
We have always leaked like a sieve. Nothing new there.

Is Inside 50 Dominance now a Strategy to Exploit?
jnrmac replied to Lou C. Fur's topic in Melbourne Demons
None of this should be news to Goodwin and Co. It is also well telegraphed that our strategy has been to get the ball in side 50 quickly. We saw this last year. The news rules however make it easier for teams to clear the ball from defence. Geelong's defence was very well organised. Ours is frankly a rabble. 1.Too many players going for a contest with the number of times the ball fell to the back where Geelong had two or three players to run into easy goals 2. Starting Ablett at FF knowing that May would be the deepest defender was obvious and worked to unsettle our defence. May ended up further up the ground 3. Last year Scott dragged Lever back to defence one on one where he is weakest. That worked as well. 4. We had 3 or 4 players commit to many contests. 2 or 3 Geeling players sat on the outside meaning if we won the contest they could tackle. If they won the contest they could run and spread. 5. Fumbling was almost our worst enemy. They handled the ball cleanly and with intent. We were like 12 yo's with a bar of wet soap. 6. Our defenders are among the worst in the comp at defending one on one. Yes the structure of our defence with injuries has made it difficult but we have major issues with OMac and Frost. May like Lever will take a while to settle in but he can't do it on his own. I would start trialling Kielty and Petty. 7. As for ANB and our mid tier players. There are a swag of them that just need to do more. They are possibly worse than ineffective. They are becoming a liability. Why do teams like Geelong have new players that come in and look like they have been playing for 5 years? We need major gameplan surgery. And perhaps it wasn't such a wise idea not to review the Perth loss.... -
Probs why we are bottom of the ladder...
-
They don't even review all games....

Petracca has a long way to go before he makes the "Hall of Fame". What an ego.
-
Dismissive comment. Not sure if you realised how sure-handed Geelong were and how clean their ball skills were.
-
Petracca's head runs at 100kmh and his body runs at 25kmh. Needs to: 1. stop thinking 3 steps ahead. 2. Stop thinking about how to pull off the 1% dink to an opponent under pressure 3. just get the ball and burst into space and kick the ball to a target 4. Stop worying about his opponent when a ball is there to be won. Just get the flippin thing.
-
Good summary You missed the bit where we must had had a world record number of kicks smothered.
-
At one point in the 3rd qtr we had something like 14 i50s for 2 pts and they had 4 entries for 4 goals. There rebound was exceptional. Our defence of it was abysmal. The 'gameplan' a=of getting it the fwd 50 raidly and holding it in there is so 2018. Can't be done with the kick in rules and players that refuse to play a zone like they are supposed to. Doesn't help when you have defenders that can't defend one on one. What has happened to Hibberd? I don't think players have drunk their own bathwater because there wouldn't have been any left after Trac and TMac have drunk it the lot. as someone quoted earlier "so many passengers and no one to replace them with" WTF have we been doing all pre-season?
-
Man you are now inventing stuff. Mine was a simple comment. It wasn't our worst game since rd 23 2017 Are you eating mushrooms of some kind?
-
It's all fugazi...
-
Who is Melchum and Louis?
-
Wow you're arguing with yourself. You said it was the worst we had played since rd 23 2017 and I happened to mention the prelim....now you say "comparing two games, 6 months apart, in two different seasons is just silly" but you want to compare two games 19mths apart? OK I give in.
-
Did you miss the prelim,?

Most sayings have some origin in a historical context. We'll "stick fat" with player X is out and out nonsence with no relevance to anything
