You won't convince me otherwise that the Covid hub was a critical component in our surge in 2021. Living, playing and eating together day in day out saw a very strong bond develop between coach and players. Yes there were a number of other factors including Darren Burgess but the hub saw a unique situation that was harnessed psitively by our club. It's the system that's important IMO

The heavy courting of Buckley was largely in the media. The word I hear is that he didn't even come second in our beauty parade and King was the absolute stand out. You make it sound like there was no detailed analysis done of the presentations and the IP that each brought to the table. That's not how it read to me. The Board throughout 2025 showed great resolve, solidarity and confidentiality. They were pretty clinical in my view and didn't fall for the commonly-held media viewpoint/pressure It may take time to all come together but we seem to have assembled a great team of coaching staff that has many miles of experience under their belts at quality clubs. I'm pretty buoyant about the journey in 2026. Hopefully its a fun ride because I was sick of same old same old issues that we refused to address or were incapable of addressing.

My desire to spontaneously sing 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight' is always just a whim away I was fired from last job marking exam papers. I couldn't understand it as I always gave 110%.

Our midfield will clearly be a question mark this year but our midfield hasn't been firing for some time. Steele is a solid choice and will at least be a replacement for a 2025 Oliver What's different for me is that we now have a lot of alternatives to our defensive structure added to good 2 way running wingmen. The defence should go back to being very solid. How we bring the ball out of our backline will largely determine how the ball goes fwd. If we change our ball movement to a similar style to Geelong - where you'd think King has all the IP - then we will look a lot more dangerous up front. If we bomb the ball to Mihocek we'll be the same as we have been in the past 4 years. Nowhere. Mihocek's goals in 2025 were about 80% lead to the ball carrier and mark. If we don't change then recruiting Mihocek will be a fail. Creative fwd entries will be the key for us. The Jeff White analysis of Melb v Geelong was enlightening and small improvements to our fwd entries will see way better scoring. That's how we will get to 12+ wins.

Jai Culley Breakout Season?
Fritch when recruited had almost zero defensive skills but he was a good field kick. So playing him across half back early on was a chance to benefit from his kicking plus teach him how to defend at AFL level. Its not unusual for juniors coming into the AFL system to go through that journey. Fritsch came in on a different pathway but had similar deficiencies to a lot of newbies. It took Fritsch several years to get up to speed with senior AFL footy. 'break out' years often come after a player realises the work required to succeed at AFL level and they have an outstanding summer of training - maybe bulking up or getting a running coach or undergoing an attitudinal shift to take every training session at a high intensity. It varies. Culley looks exactly like this. He has natural talent, has had an interrupted career, been rejected, fought back, taken his chances at senior level and has had a summer to remember. he is leaving no stone unturned. The proof of the pudding will be in the eating but all the ingredients are there for him to enjoy a great season.

First I have heard this summer about Lever being in the thick of it. Glad to hear. May and Lever seem to have been forgotten and could still be very potent for us up back With Petty, Taylor, TMac and Disco interchanging around our defence could prove to be pretty solid.

Drive to Survive: The Final Siren
The makers of Drive to Survive have done a series on the AFL based on the 2025 season and guess which club features prominently throughout? Yep The Demons. Just when we thought the trials and tribulations of 2025 were past us out comes a docu that will shine a spotlight on the machinations of the AFL and Demons Great. The other clubs to feature are the DOgs (Bontomepelli) Brisbane (Zorko and Rayner), the Giants (of course!), Gold Coast (what a surprise) and Freo. Strangely enough the Lachie Neale sag won't be highlighted but you can be sure Oliver, Trac, Goodwin etc will be front and centre.

Neither Pavlich, Stuart Loewe, Bruest, Stevie Johnson etc etc average 2 goals a game. Quite a bar you are setting.

2026 Breakout Players
If our game plan changes as we expect then our fwd line will be a big beneficiary. Guys like Chandler, JVR, Melksham, L Pickett, Mihocek will shine.

Farewell Clayton Oliver
Exactly It's either: a) Coach outlines new game plan and tells player what he needs to do to fit in to it. Player spits dummy and leaves. or; b) Coach tells trouble maker about the new 'no DH policy' and player leaves. Doesn't matter which. I'm happy. The club moves on.
