  1. I swear if this happened it would be the best Christmas present ever. Legal issues would be a hurdle especially given how the AFL is run today, but commitment? pfft- how long have we kept Sylvia for? Jurrah had a huge say in shaping the club and attracting support for 3 years, with all the indigenous footballers that have left the AFL system and returned home prematurely in recent times, surely now is time to roll the dice. Rookie list him at the least
  2. Unfortunately we aren't a 3 year old franchise who had to have these picks to be competitive (Didn't work for a while though). We're the club who wrote the rules of the game and the fact we've screwed up so much lately and need AFL help just makes me sick in the mouth
  3. Of course that's what the club "sees him as" But that sort of stuff doesn't cut it, it's cliched and scrutiny is certainly warranted for this sort of thing especially due to our recent draft history. I can't see a long-term prospect propagated by this club and not cringe. The basics of his game (the stuff Viney does) simply weren't up to scratch for perhaps 12 out of his 14 first year games. In the final couple of rounds I started to warm to him and saw more exciting skill, I just hope the experience was good and will help him learn, but I can't lie that I expected a bit more basic footy nous from him (especially due to having SANFL experience)
  4. Absolutely thrilled with the news. Great to see the headline on the website. From memory, it was something like: Watts' heart beat's irregular: 3 Inch extension. Watts commits to suspicious e-mail
  5. Based on hype, reputation,(the sort of stuff that stems from this site), body language, form (lengthy sequences without going near the ball), then yes. A lot of supporters have a paternal instinct towards such high draft picks, but as a footy observer I was disappointed
  6. Not denying he wasn't a good get, but it's just ridiculous to think that Dawes should be captain because he's a premiership player and walked into this rabble because we gave him a good offer over someone like Nathan Jones who's worked and worked, seen so many players come and go and has had his face in the mud for several years. Recruiting players from successful clubs and giving them leadership performances in poor ones just doesn't sit well with me. Byrnes was a disappointment and showed little value. Dawes struggled with injury and seemed at times disinterested right from his first game V Gold Coast when he realised that no one could kick it to him at his new club. Mitch Clark in comparison has been a big success in the way he's gone about his footy, shame about his injuries though, really enjoyed being the focal point inside 50 in 2012. I'd trust him with a position of leadership before Dawes
  7. Everyone who follows this club and are still obsessed with picks are basically gambling addicts. Let's just cut the crap and get a [censored] game plan and build a real team rather than wasting time thinking about the next Cale Morton. Obviously, the bigger issue in this is the culture in the AFL of rewarding teams who've screwed up in the first place as part of "equalisation". If we want to be part of that crap we may as well keep wasting these picks and keep getting money, and if we do then when does it all come good? Even if the AFL weren't convinced we were hopeless enough to deserve it, who gives a crap? I'd rather be moving forward with recruiting/strategy than pleading on both knees that we've screwed up and deserve something extra. People should see further than the conditioned bubble they are stuck in that says that this club will finally pick a decent player in the first round.
  8. Love the guy. Had a few games late in the season where he didn't impact too much though, just needs help from others when tagged. Marginally better in 2012 than this year, though he still clearly deserved the medal
  9. Wait, make Dawes, injury ravaged in 2013, played one good game for us, abandoned by the Pies after 2012 for a 30 year old and then recruited possibly only because we had the worst coach in AFL history running the club, captain of the Melbourne Football Club? Hell, why didn't make Rodan and Byrnes captains? May as well recruit Mitch Morton and make him captain, he's a premiership player. It's stupid to think Nathan Jones SHOULDN'T be captain, where has he gone wrong? N.Jones © C.Garland (vc), it's that simple
  10. The Saturday night team is the apocalypse of football broadcasting. BT contradicts himself, is stupidly confrontational, says garbage facts about players and doesn't provide any decent analysis, is obsessed with giving his opinion on possible injuries and suspensions and has regular hiatus' in calling to stir up the other members of the team while the game is going on. Isn't even self-aware of his shortcomings. Darcy and Richo are incredibly bland and predictable. It's an amateurish clownfest and it doesn't even stop when the game is good. Don't know how you can prefer that over Dennis and Bruce, who although are both past their prime and more prone to errors, you can tell they are far less media minded and just enjoy watching and calling rather than creating some variety act while we just want to see a game of footy and have the players' names called when they get the ball
  11. He severely underachieved in his first season and I wasn't too happy with him. Made amends in the last couple of games when he got back in the team though. There were plenty of softness/speed/decision making concerns and was horribly coached under Mark.N. If we are going to raise our midfield standards Jimmy will have to raise his considerably to be in the team, needs more of a damaging/attacking edge and was lucky to get as many games as he did
  12. Haven't missed a game in Melbourne for 2 years now, and only a few in the past 6 seasons. Generally watch at least 2 FTA games a week, follow the whole weekend, check scores etc. You know, just because it's on and it's the footy season. Probably have slackened off in my interest for neutral games of late, but I'm still a very obsessive footy person (can remember scores well and know nearly all players)
  13. If Scott Thompson's on the list, where's Darren Jolly?? I find Thompson too lost a cause to worry about him. I think Petterd was our biggest mistake so I'd love him back, and obviously Scully wanted to leave and took all that cash so that obviously skews my view (although he wouldn't have dare left if he were under Roos!) PS- I've never understood the "Maloney" thing- seen it before
  14. The Saints have been basically the worst team along with us at developing young talent and recruiting in the last few years, though they've still been better coached and have had far more good mature players who define the club. If they aimlessly throw fairly unimpressive youngsters in like this year and don't recruit well again, I'd say we've got a good chance to topple them
  15. Simple. Watts probably moves up the ground occasionally, Clark as 2nd ruck and Fitzpatrick doesn't get a game (Though probably will cause it's very unlikely Dawes, Clark and Hogan would all play 22 games). I highly doubt we could get away with having them all in one team.
  16. I hope it happens for the sake of the people who said we should've picked Martin over Scully and Trengove
  17. N.Jones to step up another level, Frawley to revisit AA form, Clark to play 22 games. I agree on Watts, Blease, Jetta and Evans And just to feel like we have more than one midfielder.
  18. What about crap like Grimes being handed Barassi's number to give the number pride or something? Just showed the club couldn't move on from Scully as well as clinging on to the glory days, complete distraction
  19. Why can't we have a red jumper and not a white one? Gold Coast and Sydney would be the only clashes, but we wear our home guernsey against them anyway
  20. I can't help but feel sorry for the club seeing Terlich and M.Jones finish 3rd and 4th. The fact that these unspectacular, hard working footballers in their mid 20s from state leagues who probably had jobs last year and played footy for the love of it and didn't think they'd reach the AFL can come in and do so well and stay in the team all year so comfortably is full credit to them, but a reality check for everyone at the club at how many underachievers we've had on our list and how poor our development has been.
  21. I've never liked Dunn much at all, terrible decision maker and has a poor attitude, but he's been decent, not great by any means, in the last part of the year and there's been no one knocking down the door to replace him. Still is a decent size/kick and has shown form in different positions throughout his career. Used to compare him to Bate quite a lot, similiar type of player, drafted together, born in the same month of the same year too and similiarly frustrating/didn't really have a position. Thought they'd get delisted together but the stars alligned to see Bate go and Dunn stay. I'm happy for Dunn to stay, but hopefully well disciplined, more hungry to stay in the team and taught to make better decisions from his kick ins. He's always had versatility so I wouldn't mind seeing him as a tagger/forward again either, he kicked quite a few goals in 2010. Or at least for him to wander up a bit more to kick goals from 50. We need a player like that
  22. I think Spencer. Fitzpatrick is the obvious answer, but we didn't really see enough of him and Spencer played has been around for longer and played more games where he's looked completely unco, soft and useless, but came back a pretty fierce competitor, has won more hitouts and a smarter player. Gawn has improved quite a bit too in his impact around the ground, as has Garland but he's always been pretty consistent (was probably taken off guard a bit last year when moved forward). Why on earth would Blease, Trengove, Grimes, Tapscott, Jetta and Mckenzie be in the most improved? All have gone downhill over the last 1-2 years, except if you count Grimes' last game improving from his last 2 years, or Trengove's and Mckenzie's last 3 games. Watts has showed significant improvement in the second half of the year, but aren't we talking the season as a whole? If yes, I'd say the names in the poll are spot on. We've barely had any improvers under Neeld/Craig
  23. B Garland Frawley x HB x McDonald Grimes C Mckenzie Viney Trengove HF x Dawes Watts F Hogan Clark x Fol Gawn Sylvia N Jones Int (from) Dunn, Kent, Terlich, M Jones, Evans, Toumpas, Howe, Jetta, Blease, Magner, Fitzpatrick. FILL THOSE X'S (Or fall back on some of the interchange (from) players) Add 2-3 more midfielders and you get competition for spots. Another medium defender, another small forward perhaps. Perfect. With Dawes, Clark, Hogan and Watts all in the forward line, no room for 2 ruckman or Fitzpatrick. JUST went with Gawn. Clark will be back up.
  24. Also had a huge say in putting us into several finals series. Yze was a versatile, highy skilled player. Robbo kicked 428 goals in 228 games, won a fair few off his own boot. Watts has kicked 60 in 73. Don't see much validity in the comparisons though obviously hard due to the quality of the sides they've played in
