Digging for gold - Targetting Under-achievers
Fat Tony replied to jabberwocky's topic in Melbourne Demons
Brandon Jack could be a star IMO -
The 5% is my assessment, although it doesn't come through in the disposal efficiency stats because they don't take into account either pressure or how safe an option is selected. McDonald plays in the easiest position in terms of disposal efficiency. In 2014 the top players in the AFL for disposal efficiency (with more than 100 possessions) were Neville Jetta, Ben Rutten, Lachie Hansen, Darren Glass, Ben Stratton and Michael Jamison. Jarrod Rivers was going at 83%, which is 10% more efficient than McDonald. I would only trade him for a good return, but I think there would be suitors.
-
Solid defensive game, great run and finds the ball, but his disposal and decision making are bottom 5% in the AFL. Personally, I don't think McDonald's flaws are fixable. I also don't think his poor skills don't suit Roos's game plan of feeding backwards to a free kicker. McDonald is one of the first players I would seek to trade for the right price. I would look to package him and ~#22 to Sydney for Tom Mitchell and Brandon Jack. RIchards and Grundy are 32 and 29 next year. And we could recruit James Gwilt at no cost as a stop gap.
-
Good to have some stability. But I would have preferred he only have a 2 year contract as senior coach.
-
PSD #2. What is his injury history?
-
The best result would be to keep our early picks, bank some salary cap room and then land Dangerfield as a Free Agent in 2016. He is a Restricted Free Agent, so it will be difficult for the top Victorian sides to outbid Adelaide.
-
I think #2 and Toumpas would be a fair trade.
-
I think the AFL should preclude Clark from entering the draft for the life of his former contract. He should be forced to re-sign a new contract with us, be traded or sit out for 12 months. Regardless of the depression issue, It sets a shocking precedent.
-
My plan is as follows: The Salary Cap weighting should be reduced to 85% for one club players to encourage player loyalty. The Salary Cap should be 1% lower for every ladder position from bottom to top. (So the Premiers have a Salary Cap 83% the size of the Wooden Spooners.) The Draft should be rejigged with the First Round only including clubs that miss the Top 8. Clubs that miss the Top 8 two years running receive two picks in the First Round. There would also be a weighted lottery for the First Round (based on two years worth of results) to discourage tanking. The subsequent rounds of the Draft would run from 8th to 1st and then 18th to 9th. Players could become Restricted Free Agents after two years, with no compensation.

The age is reporting that we are interested in James Gwilt. Only just turned 28 and a handy key defender in his prime. http://www.theage.com.au/afl/melbourne-demons/melbourne-meet-with-delisted-saint-james-gwilt-20140911-10fpiq.html

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - BILLY STRETCH
Fat Tony replied to e25's topic in Melbourne Demons
I don't think any club will take the risk on their first pick unless he is really worth it. It takes away the ability to trade that pick and we should make it clear that we are willing to let him go. -
Particularly when we feel we can wriggle a priority pick as compensation...
-
I think it is partly about money, because Clark's manager is telling him he thinks he can get a better offer. I just question if any club will take a risk on a player with a bad history of injury and depression after they do their due diligence.
-
I highly doubt it has got to the offer stage yet for MFC or any other club. Clark has a fragile body and mind and clubs will want to understand the risks. I doubt any club will offer more than one year deal on low money.

Players to target at the end of the year
Fat Tony replied to JackVineyForPresident's topic in Melbourne Demons
These three players are out of contract and can walk for nothing in the PSD. And they have shown hardly anything at AFL level. -
I don’t think we will know the full story on this until after the priority pick and Frawley compensation decisions, which, fortunate for us, is prior to the trade period.
-
You have no idea.
-
Robinson would have ranked top 5 at MFC for average possessions and tackles and 7th for average SuperCoach points this year. I am not strongly pushing the case, but he would definitely be in our 22. He is a 'good ordinary player'. The question is whether he is worth the trouble, not if he can play.
-
Martin averaged 112 SuperCoach points per game this season in 12 games. Nathan Jones averaged 101, Tyson 94 and Jamar 70. You are wrong. Again.
-
This thread reminds me of the Dustin Martin thread last year. Robinson is a loose cannon but would be in our best 22 easily.

Our favourite journo Greg Denham is reporting that we are a chance to recruit Daniel Merritt from Brisbane as a replacement for Frawley. He is 29 and contracted. The article says Brisbane may pay part of his salary. IMO He could be a decent pick up at the right price. The article also says Guilt from St Kilda is off to GWS. http://www.theaustralian.com.au/sport/afl/daniel-merrett-becomes-latest-brisbane-lions-cull-victim/story-fnca0u4y-1227045554709

We are clearly at a disadvantage, but we can come through this if we draft successfully. We would be in a much different position now if we drafted Dangerfield, Naitanui, Shuey, Beams, Sloane, Martin, Cunnington, Fyfe, Carlisle, Darling, Wines etc. We will get opportunities again but we can't fritter away our draft picks year after year.
-
I think Spencer got two more years.

Frawley Form Could Mean No First Round Draft Pick
Fat Tony replied to dazzledavey36's topic in Melbourne Demons
This is just a story to sell papers. Frawley will get the contract required for Band 1 Compensation because clubs are always willing to pay a premium for players above their actual worth when they don't have to trade players/picks. And the AFL will massage the situation if he doesn't qualify. -
She is philosophically opposed to hand outs. But she doesn't see that the impact is a much longer cycle for teams at the bottom which eventually ends in weak clubs folding.
