  1. In an attempt to maintain team balance: Out: Sellar, Tapscott In: Fitzpatrick, Bennell I want our second ruck to be able to take a mark, Sellar can't. I'd still prefer Martin, but I don't expect him to be in a condition to walk straight back in. Fitzpatrick is apparently coming on in leaps and bounds at Casey, so I'd like to see that change. Clint Bizkit reckons he's not the answer and he's probably right, but he can't be any worse than Sellar. I think on balance Petterd is probably a more suitable replacement for Tapscott who is struggling, but I chose Bennell instead for two reasons - firstly because his form has been first rate in the last two weeks by all reports so he needs to be rewarded, and because he adds pace which we need. There's no doubt there's still a number of NQRs in the side (like Bate and Dunn), but I don't think now is the time for wholesale changes. The effort of those guys have been good and largely sustained so they stay in the side for me. The idea of dropping Sylvia and Moloney is fanciful - at the end of the day these guys are in our top few players and I'd only like to see changes that actually strengthen the side, and we've got to be kidding if we think dropping Moloney and putting Couch in strengthens the side. I also think Bail had a dreadful game, I'd like to back him in to turn it around. One of those weeks where I reckon I'll change my mind a number of times before the week is through.
  2. Those who are hanging it on Morton are just proving that some people can't see through their own pre-conceived ideas. He was about 18th on our list of problems today, so it's pretty funny that some people are choosing that to focus on as an issue.
  3. I'm more disappointed about Gysberts' injury and Viney's. Viney is a tough kid and there's no doubt that come years end he'll still be ahead of most of the kids his age. I rate Gysberts and I'm impatient about his development, so I find this latest setback very frustrating.
  4. Morton is one of those lucky bastards who has an IQ through the roof to go with his talent, so if he's "cottoning on" quicker than everyone else then that's probably not surprising. I think the intent is there and the confidence is improving and his use of the ball is improving as a result. He made some excellent decisions both in traffic and in the open today. As B-H said - mistakes are forgivable so long as he keeps doing the right "fundamental" things.
  5. Definitely bombed today after an excellent game last week. I don't know what 'normal' is for him at the moment.
  6. Precisely. If you were feeling a bit "scarred", you'd sure as hell be talking yourself out of it now.
  7. The great thing about CLUBS is that sometimes you get to meet influential people who can help you meet your own goals. I think the difference between here between this deal and the Visy fiasco is that in this case, Judd has made a legitimate investment; i.e. he has paid good money to get involved. With the Visy deal he got paid money for seemingly doing sweet FA. The Visy deal was a clear leg up; this is a business deal that carries the same risks and rewards as any other business deal. The fact that he did it through an influential member of the club has nothing to do with it - condemning that would be the same as saying a player is not allowed to hook up with another player's sister - after all, they'd probably have never met if the club hadn't been involved. An absolute non-issue.
  8. Obviously I'm too stupid to pick up on your subtlety then. I just took what you said at face value, and if that isn't want you meant then I'll be buggered if I know what you did mean.
  9. Indeed - and that doesn't come as a surprise. Jurrah is class and clearly belongs in the side, but of course there are a plenty of variables that will lead to his selection.
  10. You've grossly quoted Bartram out of context there. Actually, you haven't even quoted him, you've incorrectly paraphrased what he said. Here's the article: http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/bartram-believes-dees-are-poised-to-improve-20120426-1xo0u.html And Bartram's quote: As a young guy walking in to the club he just wanted to get a game; as a senior player transitioning in to a leader, getting a game isn't enough and he wants success. That to me is the right order of things; and it's certainly nothing like "the fact they get a game each week and rack up 150 - 200 before they retire".
  11. He is. Why not? Like any player who gets dropped, he's got areas he needs to improve on before he returns. It shouldn't be that hard for Jack to see what he needs to do to get back in to the side - if he's under any doubt, it's as easy as showing him a tape of Jordie McKenzie then showing him a tape of himself. By the way I don't think Jack lacks courage, I think it's more about lack of drive than a lack of courage. He just doesn't seem to push himself hard enough. I'm always willing to give Watts the benefit of the doubt, but if he's any sort of competitor he'd be very embarrassed with his game. He was literally the only one who didn't show the required intensity on the day.
  12. Given that two of those 7 went on to be complete lemons at other clubs, you'd be forgiven for wondering if it's a bit of both.
  13. You obviously think other clubs are very, very, very stupid. FFS, if it's _painfully_ obvious to you, me and every member of Demonland that we intend to take Viney, I expect the other clubs recruiting staff who live, eat and breathe this stuff _may_ have noticed.
  14. Had no way of getting there so took the next best option? Presumably what you're saying is he'd do it for the money. I don't think we'd be able to offer a player like Sewell so much money that it would look more attractive than earning not much less at Hawthorn, vying for a flag and staying with his mates. This isn't the same thing as Scully, Ablett et al - those were monstrous amounts of money that they'd have been stupid to pass up. That won't be the case here. FA's not going to be an effective way of stealing players from other clubs, because by and large most players are actually fairly deeply rooted in the club they're in and wouldn't leave to scrape out a few extra bucks. It's designed for helping the Luke Balls of the world, who are mature players getting a bum deal at the club they're at. These players are actually few and far between - I wouldn't be surprised to see zero FA moves most years.
  15. I could've done without being reminded about that.
  16. Lynden Dunn is completely dispensable though. If Dunn gets broken, you can just find another one (as harsh as that sounds). What Watts could be is very hard to find and I'd hate to put that at risk for something that doesn't have a lot of upside.
  17. Just read this post again and I think the above line should be bolded, italics-ed and underlined. Sums up the idea completely for me.
  18. What would be Sewell's motivation for leaving Hawthorn?
  19. The thing that amazed me most from that article is that coming in to this season he'd only played 18 senior games. Feels like he's been around more than that and in my mind I'd always treated him like a 50 gamer, but really in terms of his footy career he's still just an apprentice.
  20. The two biggest concerns over Watts are hardness and fitness, and two of the most important attributes for rucking are hardness and fitness. And I don't agree that it forces him to see more of the ball - Mark Jamar wasn't dubbed "donuts" for years for a reason. Playing in the ruck doesn't guarantee getting a lot of the ball. Edit: I also agree with Jaded's point. I remember seeing Jared Brennan contest his first (and last?) ruck contest for years ago and he got kneed in the guts first up. Most ruckmen have been doing it for years before they enter the AFL system and know what they're doing - I'd hate to see Watts get broken because he didn't.
  21. Even last year Petterd and Dunn played for the same spot, and that's true this year. I still rate Petterd more than I rate Dunn, but he's going to need to either do something spectacular at Casey or wait for Dunn to fail specularly for Melbourne or he's not going to get a shot. And frankly, if he can't push past Dunn for a spot in the team, I'd seriously question his worth as a player.
  22. Jeez, that's scare the crap out of you. Best of luck with the recovery.
  23. I thought it might seem that way, but it wasn't intentional. Jones is easily in our top 5 players at the moment.
