Robert Flower
Let's hope that we can all continue to lobby the MCC to have a statue put up of Robbie Flower. If enough of us continue to push tgis suggestion then hopefully it will happen sooner rather than later. Here is a great highlights video of all the amazing feats done by champion Melbourne Demons player Robbie Flower. https://youtu.be/GPzSMlrG-o0

TEAMS: Rd 05 vs GWS
Pleased to see Harry Petty back in the Demons side. Adam Tomlinson was probably a bit unlucky to be dropped in my honest opinion. Nevertheless, it is good to see that the match committee are not underestimating the Giants who beat us at the MCG last year. We definitely cannot think it will simply be a cake-walk against the Giants.

Robert Flower
I am still hopeful the MCC will erect a statue in tribute to Robbie Flower. I think it would be a wonderful way to have a significant legacy for one of the greatest Melbourne Demons players ever.

Training Ground?
Great to see some progress! Finally! Once the ground has been done we can hopefully start laying the foundations for our Home Base! Fingers crossed!🤞

Gil McLachlan Stepping Down
In regards to growing the game, it needs to be nurtured by having AFL players doing regular footy clinics at both Primary Schools and even at High Schools. That's where the hook starts. Then you get the kids involved with Auskick (for Kindergarten and Primary School age). While for older kids it is junior football clubs. From there you pump the funds into junior football clubs and for volunteers. Making sure these junior football clubs have all the resources they need. You then look to make sure all junior (and senior) football clubs have high standard facilities. The AFL must do this with lots of funding for grassroots Aussie rules football otherwise we won't have enough new generations of footballers. If this is not made a priority then sports like basketball and soccer will take over in the next few decades. Let's hope whoever the new AFL CEO is that they acknowledge these concerns and enacts long term solutions.

Angus Brayshaw
Fingers crossed Angus Brayshaw stays at the Melbourne Demons. Very sage advice from Jordan Lewis about being careful what you wish for. Here is the link regarding those comments: https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/teams/melbourne-demons/afl-2022-jordan-lewis-warning-to-angus-brayshaw-free-agency-contract-situation-melbourne-demons-contract-offer-trade-news-rumours-whispers-latest/news-story/c60fd0fcb7c4282014f6323b9b272fdb In the end, Angus Brayshaw needs to choose between winning more Premierships (hopefully) and maybe getting more midfield time at another club. I think he still will have opportunities to play in the midfield for Melbourne in the future. But to be honest choosing team success and playing your role anywhere would easily trump purely midfield time. Anyway, I am hopeful that Angus Brayshaw will want to stay and play an active part in creating a dynasty of sustained success at the Melbourne Demons.

Gil McLachlan Stepping Down
I am not too fussed as to who the new AFL CEO will be. Gillon McLachlan has done a reasonable job overall. Especially with keeping the AFL going during the last 2 years of COVID-19 interruptions. However, my tip is either Travis Auld or Brendan Gale. Eddie McGuire will probably attempt to throw his hat in the ring but he will be no chance. Anyway, who ever becomes the next AFL CEO needs to definitely put tens of millions into grassroots junior football. We simply do not have enough young boys playing Aussie Rules Football. We also are absolutely desperate for more volunteers as others have mentioned. Personally, I would also like to expand the VFL back to being just Victorian clubs and increase it to 18 teams. The current VFL with NSW and QLD teams (e.g Southport Sharks) is just weird and probably costing smaller clubs far too much in travel expenses. I would also love to bring back the VFA and all the old teams like the Camberwell Cobras, Oakleigh Devils, Yarraville Eagles, Brighton Penguins, Northcote Dragons, Waverley Panthers etc. But sadly that is more a pipe dream. Nevertheless, investment into grassroots football and junior football in Victoria is crucial for the AFL to flourish.

CHANGES: Rd 05 vs GWS
Far out! Sam Weideman must be thanking his lucky stars! Time to perform Sam! We all want you to succeed but you need to give 100% effort and have intensity throughout the entire game. Give David Neitz or David Schwarz a call if you need advice. I am sure they would be happy to speak to you. As for Ben Brown. It is very disappointing but I think he was definitely sucked in to the situation. I am also starting to detect a pattern with Williamstown doing this to Casey in the VFL. From previous accounts mentioned, the Seagulls are certainly developing a reputation of being scraggers and trying under-handed tactics against AFL listed players. Anyway, time for Sam Weideman to stand up and deliver. No more excuses.

WEG Poster from losing 1988 VFL Grand Final
Hello all, Just for the sake of convenience, I am including for those who are interested the VFL losing 1988 grand final poster done by WEG (we will try to erase the horrible memories of how we got belted by Hawthorn in that grand final). I am a very big fan of WEG artwork and of VFL and AFL grand final posters in general. Obviously, for our drought breaking 2021 AFL Premiership we have seen the losing VFL 1958 grand final poster being used by Weg Art. However, I am hopeful we can look to use the 1988 (and the losing 2000 AFL grand final) poster(s) in the near future if we are lucky enough to have any sustained success. Anyway, here is what the 1988 VFL grand final poster by WEG looked like for the Melbourne Demons. This is quite a rare image as you would expect and it took me a bit of time to get access to (I had to politely ask a poster on Big Footy). Nevertheless, for those who are into history and memorabilia of the Melbourne Football Club it is worth keeping a copy of this image in my opinion. Here it is!

Toby Bedford, Kade Chandler and Bailey Laurie…
Out of the three originally mentioned it is still Bailey Laurie who excites me the most. He had a bit of bad luck in his first year with injuries and COVID-19 lockdowns curtailing his season in 2021. However, he has the most upside. Just needs to get stronger, fitter and impact games more. Flashing in and out of games kicking 2 goals isn't enough. He needs to put in consistent 4 quarter efforts. Once he gains enough experience at VFL level at the Casey Demons he will eventually get his chance at AFL level with the Melbourne Demons. His side-step, ball use, decision making, pace and kicking skills are excellent. As can be seen in the highlights video from his draft year (shown below). Bailey just needs to get used to playing against bigger bodies in the VFL for a while. Either way, there is no rush on him to play AFL straight away. Let him develop his craft in the VFL for a while.

CASEY: Rd 03 vs Williamstown
Really keen to see how the Melbourne Demons AFL listed players perform this evening against Williamstown in VFL. Especially Ben Brown, Blake Howes and Bailey Laurie. I reckon Blake Howes is a good chance of making his senior debut for the Melbourne Demons over the next 3 or 4 weeks.

Angus Brayshaw
Angus Brayshaw has been fantastic for the Melbourne Demons. Not only has his disposal and decision making improved out of sight, but his leadership qualities are fantastic. I also think he is a brilliant clubman and you know that he loves the Melbourne Football Club. He is a vital component of our new "Demon Spirit" winning culture and I genuinely hope he stays with the Melbourne Football Club.

Membership Tally 2022
Fingers crossed we can get to 65,000 Demons members. We are tracking along nicely. Just gotta keep winning! If we get over 70,000 members I will be over the moon!

POSTGAME: Rd 04 vs Port Adelaide
We basically suffocated Port Power. Keeping them to no goals for a half! Just wow! I remember games where Melbourne didn't score a goal for a half. Port Power were humiliated. Was a very clinical but ugly win. Would of been a good percentage booster if we didn't muck around with it so much going forward. I felt they were a bit too cute with the handballing at times. Nevertheless, a win is a win! Max Gawn played a brilliant game. Sadly Sam Weideman didn't grasp his opportunity and I expect Ben Brown to be back in the side against GWS.

My 3 word player analysis V Port
Sorry but I gotta put in my 3 word comment for Sam Weideman. Disappointing effort tonight. After last week kicking 4 goals against Essendon I held high hopes he would contribute. I barely noticed him tonight.
-
CHANGES: Rd 05 vs GWS
I agree. Sam Weideman's performance was underwhelming tonight.

Brownlow chances for Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver?
I was just wondering what fellow Demons supporters thoughts are on who from the Melbourne Demons are a good chance to win the Brownlow Medal this year? Personally, I think Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver would definitely be strong chances. I am slightly in favour of Christian Petracca due to his current line of form. However, the sad fact is, the last time we had a Brownlow Medal favourite in Cameron Bruce back in 2005 he ended up with a brutally injured shoulder from a tackle by Brent Guerra from St. Kilda. Anyway, as much as I would like to see another Melbourne Demons player win a Brownlow Medal (our last one being Shane Woewodin in 2000), I would much more prefer to see the Melbourne Demons win another Premiership. Nevertheless, I am interested in hearing other people's thoughts on who they think is likely to win the Brownlow Medal in 2022.

Jake Bowey Rising Star #2
Wow! Well done Jake Bowey! 9 games and 9 wins so far. His calmness under pressure and his foot skills as well as his decision making is a pleasure to watch. He also has 2 NAB Rising Star nominations now and a 2021 AFL Premiership medallion to go with it! The most exciting thing is he will continue to get better and better as a footballer as he gains more AFL experience. Bluey Bowser has been fantastic for the Melbourne Demons so far! However, we definitely shouldn't forsake the profound impact (my favourite) Mark "Choco" Williams has had in developing these young players at the Melbourne Demons.

Farewell Luke Jackson
I am still hopeful the Luke Jackson stays with the Melbourne Demons. He could get paid more elsewhere at West Coast or Fremantle. Although, we will pay him reasonably well too. I am a bit annoyed at David Schwarz saying he is worth $1 million a season though! While Luke Jackson could be worth that much in the future. To say he is worth that now puts undue pressure on him and the club. Especially as we need to take into account that Angus Brayshaw's contract finishes at the end of this season and I think Clayton Oliver's contract finishes next year or the year after. However, if Luke Jackson wants to win more Premierships and create a Chicago Bulls or Los Angeles Lakers or Boston Celtics style dynasty at the Melbourne Demons (kinda like we did in the 1950s and early 1960s) then he will stay. In the end, he will need to decide between money and extreme scrutiny as an individual or a bit less money and sustained team success. My tip is he will re-sign with the Melbourne Demons. How long his contract will be I have no idea though.

What they are saying at Bomberland
We should not have any sympathy for Essendon. They have humiliated us many, many times before. They should be despised with a passion! In recent memory losing to Essendon by 18 points in round 3 back in 2019. I remember a horrible, mean old man who was an Essendon supporter laughing at us and saying we would be wooden spooners (he wasn't off by much to be brutally honest). Then there was the utter disgrace and ineptitude of losing by 148 points to Essendon in round 2 back in 2013. Mark Neeld had well and truly had his papers stamped to be sacked after that. Then there was the 5 point loss in the elimination final to Essendon way back in season 2004. Ironically the last time Essendon actually won a final. Plus who could ever forget the belting we received when a juggernaut Essendon side beat us in the 2000 AFL grand final by 10 goals (60 points). Luckily I don't have nightmares about that horrific day anymore (breaking our Premiership drought in 2021 cured that!). Lastly there was the massive embarrassment of losing to Essendon by 1 point in round 6 of 1992 when Melbourne were up by 47 at the start of the last quarter! I don't forget those painful losses and neither should any other Melbourne supporter. Fingers crossed the Demons players are focused on the job at hand against Essendon for this Friday.

CHANGES: Rd 03 vs Essendon
Hopeful that Lever will be back. But only if 100% fit. Same with Hibberd and Petty. Too early for me to make any other suggestions on who could come in until after the Casey Demons VFL match. Jayden Hunt was poor with his decision making and his disposal at times against the Gold Coast Suns. But I think he should be playing on the half forward line to utilise his speed rather than as a defender. But with our injuries we must make do with what cattle we have available. All I do know is that the Melbourne Demons players should get plenty of rest. They looked totally exhausted at 3/4 time. I would only have one main training session either Tuesday or Wednesday this coming week. Nevertheless, I will put my faith in Selwyn Griffith to know what is best to manage the players with a short turnaround to playing again next Friday night.
-
POSTGAME: Rd 02 vs Gold Coast
Relieved to win ugly. I thought it may be close and we would have a win between 10 and 20 points. The Gold Coast Suns have certainly improved from last time we played them. The Melbourne Demons players looked absolutely cooked at 3/4 time. The heat and humidity really took it's toll. Kicking 5 behinds and no goals in the 4th quarter was a little disappointing. However, we got the win and that's all that really matters. I would definitely only have one training session this coming week and give our players plenty of rest before we play next Friday night against the Essendon Bombers. Fingers crossed Jake Lever returns next match too.

Welcome to Demonland: Taj Woewodin
I'm really looking forward to seeing Taj Woewodin develop for the Casey Demons in the VFL. The great thing is that he won't get thrown to the wolves and will get plenty of time to mature and develop in the VFL. Fingers crossed he earns a senior debut in the AFL later this season, but there is absolutely no pressure and it's such a huge asset that we have (my favourite) Mark "Choco" Williams as our development coach!

Farewell Luke Jackson
I am hopeful Luke Jackson will extend his contract with the Melbourne Demons. In my view if Luke Jackson wants to win more Premierships he will stay with us. There is also the opportunity to be part of a dynasty at the Melbourne Demons.

Casey Demons 2022
It will be interesting who gets a senior debut for the Demons later this season. I think Woewodin, Laurie, Howes and van Rooyen are all possibilities if they perform well at Casey. Nevertheless, we shall wait and see.
