NON MFC: Round 11
Don’t we have a second round pick ties to the Dorks? Long may they plummet down the ladder....

POSTGAME: Rd 11 vs North Melbourne
Rewatching the game, a few additional thoughts. North were terrible. We could have smashed them off the park with accurate goal kicking. It is lucky it didnt matter. Tommo and Spargo really played their roles. Tommo served as a cutout target, connected well and was solid defensively on the wing. Best not playing as a permanent back, though. Spargo worked hard and delivered the ball i50 with quality kicks. He worked hard, got into good positions and I thought did a good job. AVB - again, he was tough at the contest and got into good positions, his turnovers and brain fades are worrying. Jones. Spread really well. Created width going forward on a number of occasions to good effect. Got in the way in the middle a few times, but the spread was good. has slowed down half a cog. Kozzi =pencil him in for rising star nomination, That was an impressive game. Jason Taylor - take a bow, Rivers, Kozzi and Jacko were outstanding for first year player Good signs. Nice to have two training runs in Adelaide before we face the Pies and get on with the rest of the season. Umpires. First quarter was a disgrace. After that, they essentially put the Whistle away. Hope they stay in Adelaide and away from us.

GAMEDAY: Rd 11 vs North Melbourne
Not having Max and Jack gives them an ‘excuse’, but the game will certainly tell us a fair bit about the team for 2019. Drop this and we are the rabble most here suggest we are. Win it and we are anything from middle of the road to late bloomers. Glad we are not playing in Hobart, we seem to suck the big ones down there. At least we have shown a liking for Adelaide oval. Reckon we will be in a tough game for 2 1/2 quarters, then ease away to 36 point win.

Luke Jackson's chances of winning the rising star? * nominated Round 10 *
I reckon his chances are pretty good now they have announced it.

Nibbler Suspended for 4 Weeks
It was not intentional, but it was a really bad outcome for the kid. Whipped into the ground at force, unable to protect his head. Concussed and out for the game. If it was my kid playing the game I would seek a strong penalty for that. 4 weeks sets a benchmark. The outcome definitely impacted the decision. Notice that Pickett whips players to the turf - he needs to be careful that the ‘dangerous tackle’ free kicks dont escalate if he bangs the head. It’s great to be tough, but not so great to be agricultural in how you do it.

Nibbler Suspended for 4 Weeks
Not much apart from the fact that Nibber is not a ‘superstar’ so is expendable for their value-signalling. Not a bog player at a big club so his ticket is already punched.

Luke Jackson's chances of winning the rising star? * nominated Round 10 *
Needy or what? 28 minutes after not getting an answer you add a follow up? (LOL). If he catches the eye of the judges for his game this week and no ‘favourite’ has a good game, then he could win a nomination. He had a very impressive game, so I think his chances are good. No crows players would be in front of him, anyway..... I think regardless of a nomination, he has shown that there are many years of great games in front of him...

POSTGAME: Rd 10 vs Adelaide
I think the crows came out to be ‘tough guys’. We responded in kind (and got in the umpires bad books). Some of their he-man efforts were poor. I loved May looking out for Lockhart - shows what a leader and a champ he is. So many of their off the ball shenanigans not penalised until the last. When Oliver wasn’t being held, he just cut them apart. I think the crows ran out of angry-juice and that was essentially all they had. They are an absolute rabble. Pulled us down to their level for the first three quarters (not all that hard to do) but we had enough to break it open and turn the last into a training drill.

CHANGES: Rd 11 vs North Melbourne
Echoing Goody: In: proper protection for Max. Out: cheap shots on Max stopping him getting to the contests. I thought they gave Max a lot more forward/bench time in the last. He finished the game on the pine. Might be part of the management strategy?

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs Adelaide
From the nekkid coaching box: Play Max at full forward - can take a contested mark and doesnt get any shorter. This will really stretch them. Jacko to take the centre bounces with Tommo as chop out. It will force Crows to shift a swing an back to cover, giving balance to our backline. I think we are one small forward short. Bedford of C Wagner needs to be at the feet of the forwards. Dees to win by 37 points.

TEAMS: Rd 10 vs Adelaide
Weather forecast as fine, so no reason to play small down back. Maybe we didn’t expect them to play all the talls? 8 changes is a heck of a lot. we Will will this if we win the contest and dominate forward half time. The midfield should be one of the best in the comp, but they too often play panicked and slow under pressure. watch out for Max to ruck then play back half, ie Chb. Tommo to do midfield ruck, Jacko forward 50. Let’s see which side turns up.

CHANGES: Rd 10 vs Adelaide
No one needs a rest, they only had a light run last Thursday...

Preferred Midfield Mix
After our insipid performance, i looked at a few other midfields over the weekend. We seem to crash forward every time. Other successful midfields would often play laterally, bringing up a winger or half back to provide outside run. We get the tap from Max, then barge forward handballing furiously to each other before dumping the ‘chaos ball’ inside 50. When we could run the extra off the back of the square this had potential. The midfield mix is less relevant than their method. Against a well drilled and strong midfield, we get shown up every time. However, on topic, I would play Viney at half forward a lot more, use Harmes as a Tagger, and rely on Oliver, Trac, Brayshaw, Swallow and occasionally Melksham to work with the wings to create a more systematic exit, rather than just a chaotic one.

The Rest of the Season
This is a season when almost all teams are dropping their pants at some point. we just dropped ours. If we can bag a few wins in the next little stretch, we could even make finals. It might be papering over the cracks, but it would be seen as a pass.... If the calculations are true, then we have had the hardest run so far and the easiest run to the finish line.

THE TEAM STRUCTURE
Why didnt you post this after the hawks game? I disagree with about 80% of your commentary

Josh Mahoney - The Secret Unlocked!
Elgit, his pregame videos are absolute mockers - he interviews Stafford about goal kicking and we miss everything against the Lions. He interviews Plopp about forward structure and it sucks a big one against the Power. Seems to have the kiss of death!

POSTGAME: Rd 09 vs Port Adelaide
We got first hands on it from max so many times, but proceeded to a) fumble, b) be pre-tackled, or c) rush a dump-disposal and turn it over. Max needs confident, strong and capable midfielders at his feet. The midfielders are the issue. They just dont know how to do more than the one thing (get ball, get rid of ball). When we come up against poor, slow or weak midfields, we look a million bucks. It is so rushed that good teams take advantage. We need smarter midfielders who make time and find valuable exits according to a range of plans, not just get ball dump ball.

The Rest of the Season
Best team on the park each week. Win as many as we can. No favourites - out of form, no game. Work on midfield process. More options when things aren’t working. Last night was terrible, but hopefully it was a slip and not a new standard.
