Demonland Player of the Year - Round 5
6: Salem 5: Harmes 4: Frost 3: Brayshaw 2: Oliver 1: Preuss

The Psychology of Tom McDonald
Going at everything one-handed and trying to hold the oppo off with the other arm Classic Demons trait to have a good year in a contract year in 2018..... Looks miles off the pace currently

Changes vs Richmond
At the moment we can win the footy but we turn it over and defensively we lack any cohesion Our ball movement is slow and stagnant; all effort and no effect We look like a bottom four side, at best Scary thing is we have our best mids available and they are pathetic at the contest OUT: Jones (rested), Spargo, Jetta (knee), C Wagner IN: Stretch, O Mac Garlett, Lockhart If Kolodjashnij is fit he comes in for Hibberd too, which says how little I rate Hibbo at the moment, cos I donโt think KK is up to much chop as an afl player either Tiggas will belt the living bejesus out of us methinks
-
Post Game: Rd 5 v St. Kilda
Too many vfl level players: Spargo, Frost, Hunt, Hore, C Wagner, J Wagner Old men past it: Jones, Lewis, Hibberd
-
Post Game: Rd 5 v St. Kilda
We look like a bottom four side This midfield is our first choice midfield and consistently second to the ball Forget finals; rest of the year is about working out how we can be so bad at contested footy given Gawn / Preuss in the ruck feeding Oliver, Brayshaw, Viney, Harmes etc Pathetic
-
GAMEDAY: Rd 05 vs St Kilda
Theyโre ordinary; we are worse 12 years of being atrocious, one good year last year, now back to being ordinary Most frustrating side to support
-
Casey Demons v Australia Under 18
saw him impact one contest (in first half), but that was it edit: may not have been out there in the second half, as we clearly ran without afl-listed players for the majority of the second half some talented kids out there
-
Casey Demons v Australia Under 18
Ugly second half for Casey but looks like some elite talent in this yearโs draft crop, headed by the blood nut Matty Rowell and his midfield mate Noah Anderson (nephew of Dean, and not eligible for hawks or saints as father-son selection)
-
Casey Demons v Australia Under 18
rowell and anderson look like incredible talents i'm friends with fish mcasey's dad, who played one game for the aints back in the 80s (his claim to fame is that when he went on the ground plugger was sent to full-back!) and fish looks hella brave as their chb

Casey Demons v Australia Under 18
pickett has blistering pace but his ball use is atrocious edit: although better than anb's d50 exit kick...my god that was ugly
-
WELCOME TO DEMONLAND - ED LANGDON
he's not a small forward; he's a wingman / rebounding flanker handy player who breaks lines and tackles well, but has a tendency to spray it of the boot given that we gave up second rounders for melksham and hibberd, i'd put him BELOW their value, so maybe something like straight third rounder OR our second for langdon and freo's third / fourth rounder could work?
-
Billy Stretch Appreciation Thread
he works hard to get from contest to contest. but he is: not slow but not quick doesn't break the lines can't hit targets by foot doesn't put on enough defensive pressure is limited to being able to play one role, purely as a midfielder he's unfortunately proved to be entirely vanilla as a footballer at this point - he's like jkh in that regard

OUR FUTURE TEAM
sure, i mean...why not? it's all a bit of fun on a messageboard.... i prefer to think of it in terms of list - who'll still be on it in 2023, at the start of the next tv rights deal? likely still on the list: may (turns 31 in 2023) salem (28) harmes (28) petracca (27) viney (29) lever (27) spargo (24) brayshaw (27) gawn (31 on dec 31, 2022) oliver (26) hannan (29) preuss (28) hunt (27) fritsch (27) uncertain (let's say half of them are still on the list at the start of 2023; i've highlighted a guess of a dozen still with us): bedford (23) hibberd (33) stretch (27) kolodjashnij (28) frost (30) melksham (32) vandenberg (31) jordon (23) kennedy harris (28) nietschke (23) o mac (27) neal-bullen (27) sparrow (23) baker (25) hore (27) petty (24) jetta (33) j wagner (29) j smith (27) chandler (23) c wagner (26) lockhart (23) walker (28) keilty (28) bradtke (23) unlikely: jones (35) lewis (37) maynard (32) garlett (34) t smith (32) so, here's round 1, 2023 (give or take end of trade / draft period of the next four years, natch, player fitness, etc., etc.)... B: Jetta - May - Lever HB: Salem - Petty - Fritsch ? Harmes - Brayshaw - Hannan HF: Petracca - T Mac - Hunt F: Preuss - Weideman - Melksham Foll: Gawn - Oliver - Viney I/c: Spargo - Sparrow - Lockhart - J Smith Emerg: Frost - Hore - C Wagner - Bradtke tbh, it's not wildly different from now - the 14 or so who should, hopefully, still be with us are core players of our team now, with virtually four full seasons ahead of them of course, some of them may choose to retire after winning four premierships in a row from 2019-2022 inclusive.........

Round 5 Non MFC games
nah, pies have been long past us for a long, long time - we used to be the two biggest clubs in the competition by a big, big stretch same number of flags since 58 (three apiece) but umpteen dozen gf appearances for them and continued strength as a club over an extended period of time whilst we have floundered on and off the field but if yr talking recent times, they only went past us on-field on prelim final day last year - they won, we didn't they are currently playing a great brand of footy tho, whereas we need to improve significantly to match last year's results
-
Sam Weideman + contract
exactly average afl wage was $370k last year, and will go up again in 2019 as the cba increases every year leading up to end of 2022 and the next rights agreement you gotta pay someone, after all...
-
Sam Weideman + contract
he kicks 80 goals a year he'll be on riewoldt, cameron, and franklin level! with the way we're playing and bringing the ball i50, two goals a game average would be very solid, but most importantly is that weed is continuing to impact play on a regular and consistent basis charlie curnow is on over $800k a year; ben brown is on somewhere similar after originally being mooted as possibly earning up to $1m a season, signed up to the end of 2020 - when i believe he'll be one year short of a free agent but pre-agency may become a possibility for brown at the end of this season if the the kangaroos are still average to poor-ish

Who will the Demons target next?
this hawks are already setting up to throw everything at him, unfortunately, and his best mate plays there and has just signed a backloaded four year deal to help...
-
Sam Weideman + contract
and about half of his current salary which is over $1.2m a year key forwards are the big earners in the competition weid has the hallmarks of being a ripper player - he competes in the air and at ground level, tackles, and is a fantastic kick in the grand scheme of salary cap management, $650k a year is not huge money these days tbh
-
Who will the Demons target next?
Carltank traded Marchbank and Pickett plus a second rounder for a second and third rounder in 2016, plus a 2017 first round pick - itโs not that great a deal in isolation Plowman is a below average defender - was part of the deal that saw pick No.28 together with No.77, 95 and Geelong's 2016 first-round pick (acquired in the Lachie Henderson trade) to Greater Western Sydney for Lachie Plowman, Jed Lamb, Andrew Phillips and Liam Sumner and pick No.8 Neither deal is equivalent to $cully for pick 68 or whatever it was, which remains daylight robbery
-
Changes: Rd 05 v St. Kilda
god i hope not love the idea of an in-form and switched-on garlett being in the side, and i really like what lockhart offered in his first two games at afl level, so... IN: lockhart, garlett, jetta OUT: spargo, c wagner, j wagner B: Jetta - Frost - Hore HB: Salem - O Mac - Hibberd ? Harmes - Jones - Brayshaw HF: Petracca - T Mac - Hunt F: Preuss - Weideman - Melksham Foll: Gawn - Oliver - Viney I/c: Stretch - Fritsch - Garlett - Lockhart Emerg: Spargo - Petty - C Wagner - J Wagner ostensible best squad currently injured: may, lewis, lever, kolodjashnij, hannan, vandenberg, j smith (also jkh, who is probably in that 28-32nd player on the list)

Worried
saints are quick, and are playing winning football; given our below average form you'd be a fool NOT to be worried one thing that they're definitely not doing is scoring - high of 86, low of 66, two other scores in the 70s they're obviously not getting it inside 50 as much as us (average of 52.8 to our 59.8), but they are going at nearly 50% efficiency once they do get it in (we're at a paltry 38.9% by comparison) their defensive 50 work has been fairly mid-level (avg 9.3 to our 13.8 tackles i50) they rebound from 50 better than us by a fairly big margin, but their desire to play on and run with it will really test us (9.5 bounces per game compared to our 3) their game plan is not entirely dissimilar to the peptides in that it's all about fast ball movement and getting players out the back to help facilitate that if they pull it off it looks terrific, but if they don't hit the targets under increased pressure that you'd hope we'll bring, then there's a good chance they will themselves be susceptible to turnover themselves as they'll be out of the position and they don't track back that well we can win, but honestly...who knows in this nutzoid season

Round 4 Non MFC games
aflua seems to have the 2018 laws of the game, but not the 2019 version: https://aflua.com.au/laws/

Round 4 Non MFC games
Scoring has to be at a low for the afl era, surely? GC17-Carltank another low scoring snoozer
-
WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - AUSTIN BRADTKE
yes, he played against henry walsh (sam walsh from carlton's little - but much taller - brother) in the draw walsh had 20 hitouts to bradtke's 15, 3 disposals to bradtke's 11, a mark apiece, and no goals for walsh i believe there's a replay available on the nab league app but i have not watched

Casey Demons v North Melbourne VFL - Round 2
sounds like a fair response from last week then!
