VFL Development League - competition to finish
drdrake replied to whatwhat say what's topic in Melbourne Demons
This is a legitimate fear although the money players can earn in local footy is out of whack and a good player that has the ability to play VFL could make $1000+ a game cash playing local footy. AFL clubs will still need 10+ players to top up so kids that miss the draft still have a chance to play at an AFL reserves side and the stand alone VFL clubs. You would have fears though for the financial viability of a number of these stand alone clubs. It would be good for AFL Vic to form a Metro Premier League that sits under the VFL. This will not only provide a better path way but also help level out local competitions through out Metro Vic.- 35 replies

MATCH PREVIEW AND TEAM SELECTION - Round 18
drdrake replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
The AFL season is a marathon not a sprint, at some stage in a marathon you need to do what is needed so you can finish off strongly. The result this weekend is not important we are gearing up for 5 matches after this and hopefully a finals campaign, if we can pinch the result great, if we can't the above is spot on get touch into 4 blokes that have been out, plus Hogan plus Gawn that are still a long off playing good footy. You then add Jones back in, plus Vince over the next 2 weeks, all of the sudden your best 22 is on the park with half of them having breaks that will hopefully have them fresh and firing for August/September. Get you 3-4 wins we need to play finals, ideally now finish 5th or 6th giving us the home final. -
VFL Development League - competition to finish

This is very interesting. It means VFL clubs essentially will need to work with Local clubs for top up players. I wonder if this will see some local clubs forming strong relationships with VFL clubs to get them to direct players that miss out to them. An example could be a strong Premier club in the eastern suburbs, Casey has 10-15 players on their list they can call up, assuming clubs will still want their players playing together rather that scattered across Victorian leagues.- 35 replies

You are assuming they are paid up members. I know the Bulldogs and North give away a massive number of free memberships, I'm sure we do this as well not sure of the degree of it though.
-
Yep, if not this year but in 2018 if any club sees this bloke one out deep forward they will be extremely worried. Again though we need to get the ball to him
-
Once our Midfield returns from injury, we have the ideal player for that role, someone that is strong, quick, hard at it very good mark, kicks it well. Reminds me a bit of Patrick Dangerfield.

Why is the ball dry for them and soap for us
-
I think we have had so much go on as side issues that a number of our player performances have been under rated. Just hope his draft buddy Brayshaw can get right he is a very good player also.

You jump up off your chair to yell abuse at a player and you make contact to that player, then blame the player for being out of line. What a ripping bloke you are.

No change, Give Watts a half at VFL, Tyson another week off. Keep them fresh for Port and the run home
-
Tall Defenders on our list T Mac, O Mac and Frost, that is really it. We have two areas to fill a tall defender and second ruck/Forward, this bloke fills one of these voids.
-
Massive week, I reckon the game will be decided at the Gawn V Kruezer battle, last years all Australian Ruckman needs to find form against who I reckon is currently this years all Australian Ruckman.

No one could argue with this post. The difference between Jack and Boyd, Jack was a number 1 pick that stuck with his club dare to say the support network he has built at the club is a strong one, Boyd did the right thing by Boyd took the million a year, he has to expect that being that young you will be under immense pressure both internal and external

This could be true, every league has standard sentencing that you can accept on match day, I dare to say if this was offered he would have jumped on it, it is wrong but not may umpires want to visit the tribunal and if we didn't have this a lot of acts wouldn't be reported. He may have been offered on Saturday the standard 2 weeks for striking which is pretty common in most leagues. I dare to say though once the league saw the footage they would have charged him to face the tribunal. My understanding of AFL rules that if you are suspended you cant have an official role. From memory when Clarkson had is issue at local football, if he had been suspended he was unable to coach Hawthorn for the period he was suspended. If that is the case if he gets 10-18 weeks which he should he should be suspended from the AFL for that period with out pay.

Social media and accessibility to cameras means you can't get away with any act like this and nor should you. We have no idea what happened to the lead up of this action only the stuff that is the story gets shown, the media edits anything to get a story. Local footy is in bad shape at the moment, are the on field and off field incidents any worse than they have been in the past, no, but the access to cameras and social media every thing that happens at local footy is published. This is a good thing as hopefully it will continue to clean up local footy. Should he be sacked, no, should he get a whack from his employer yes, he wasn't representing his employer when he did this act and the local league will sanction him accordingly. However his employer the AFL needs to take some sort of action for its image.

Tend to agree, the competition is extremely even this year there is no easy game and really for us to have almost a third of our starting 18 out is a real concern. Also worried about Max Gawn, his tap work is good but his marking has been poor, hoping he can get his touch back this week after 2 games back. Hopefully we can at least get our forward line back this week with Watts, Garlett and Hogan

What's with Adelaide getting into our sponsors, first Hertz and last night China Southern Airlines

Should be on a full oval 12 a side, 6 on the bench. two zones max of 6 players per side in each zone. Make it about speed and skill, similar to Rugby 7s

At a guess around 300K basing on approx. average of $150 per membership, I wouldn't expect a lot of the premium membership packages and reserve seat packages. the 150 is a little less than general to allow for kid memberships

Jetta knows his game and limits. He reads the ball very well and jumps at the contest with very good timing. Also a very good mark. -
Australian Under 18 Championships 2017

I wonder if this quote will be something we hear more and more. My understanding that AFL participation numbers are increasing at the early age groups Auskick to U10s but the 14+ age groups the drop off is enormous. Be interested to actually see stats from the AFL, which we never will on the growth or lack of growth in the 14+ age group. The flow on will be drop off in talent pools, you will always have good players but finding the late picks and rookies will be a lot harder -
That last half of the season in 1998, is still the best period of football for me as a Melbourne supporter, I only started to follow the club start of the 90s, didn't have any interest in the VFL prior to then. The games against West Coast, Richmond, then finals V Adelaide and St Kilda before North got us really was an extremely exciting period with the Wiz central to this

Firing Bailey wasn't good, but hiring Neeld was a hell of a lot worse. We talk about some players being coach killers, Neeld rightly or wrongly destroyed a lot of players. Plan and simple the type of player we drafted through that period was wrong for were the game was heading. We drafted outside runners that didn't have the skill set required at AFL level. Trengove was an exception, he could run but also was able to play inside and prior to his feet issues kicked the ball really well.
