Strauss, Tappscott, Taggart development
PJ_12345 replied to Norm Smith's Curse's topic in Melbourne Demons
More like shoulder reconstruction and broken leg issue. Mind you I was about to say that's why he is behind others drafted in the same year and then I remembered that included Watts, Blease, Bail, Bennell and Jetta who haven't really developed or set the world on fire. Strauss gets a hall pass for one more preseason. Hasn't been able to build up physically as much as he has needed to because of his leg so will be good see what he can do next year. -
Lets get a big crowd to the MCG next Saturday night vs Bulldogs

Don't mean to be a negative nancy but its the night of the Wallabies and British Lions tour at Etihad... but I'm sure the AFL didn't realise that when they were sorting out the fixtures - like how they forgot to give us a Friday night game. I mean its a pretty spontaneous event, only once in every 12 years, and not really a big deal, just a sell out crowd of 55,000 -
The thought of having Dawes, Clark, Hogan, Howe, Watts and Davey forward next year is the only thing getting me through this year.... I wanted to get rid of him not too long ago but been really happy to see him up forward. Where he plays he best footy, is most confident and we get the most out of his contested mark and effective disposal rate.
-
Blease offers something which we have in very short supply - speed. But he also offers something we have in abundance - turnovers. Collingwood had 24 shots on goal from our turnovers and Blease's effective disposal rate was a large part of that (mind you so was Silvia's under 50%). You guys sum him up pretty well. Blease can keep on playing to get experience, I'll just stay in the bar!
-
Very true, and I think he was averaging 15 disposals then as well and even got 2 Brownlow votes! Needs to train with Davey. The two could learn something off eachother: Davey; to get back his old confidence and back himself for a run Blease; to hit short targets consistently
-
He has gone from an average effective disposal rate of 76% in 2011, to 59% in 2012 and 52% so far this year. To put that into perspective Nicholson has an average effective disposal rate of 64% this year. Ones was a rookie and the other a priority pick... Sure he has pace, but Jetta also has pace and he has an average effective disposal rate of 85% this year. I want him to be great but seriously needs to lift his game... the turnovers is killing us. Doesn't help when they put so much effort to get it forward for him to turn it over because he cant hit a target 5m away. Just frustrating. Will be good to see what a pre-season can do to him.
-
Really please with Blease's pace but please please can he stop turning it over... please

Who cares?
-
Very true, but that relates to the people they have appointed and overall their inability to elect effective staff.
-
The boards failure for me is their inability to appoint effective people - primarily coaches and CEO. Whilst they have shown they can reduce debt significantly and are competent with the financial aspect, the pockets of generous supports are getting smaller and smaller - unfortunately an AFL bailout is needed. That will come with conditions - ie AFL endorsed board members and coach. How this will help the clubs actual problem of backing the wrong people still beats me. I think what the board needs most are members with football experience and background. Jim was supposed to be that for this board. Stuck between a hard place and a rock: We need AFL funding but it will come with conditions, and we need board members with football experience which the AFL conditions might hinder. One or the other wont fix it, we need both.
-
Or the increase in FD spending, or the new facilities (Casey and Aami Park), or the improved relationship with the MCC, or the consecutive membership growth bar this year, or getting staff such as Misson and Craig... Also remember debt demolition also occurred under Don. However they have had catestrophic failures regarding appointing important staff such as coaches, and CEO. Credit where credit is due old dee.

Spot on, its like he is chasing Shooter McGavin for Happy Gilmores PGA jacket...

I've rated Spencer above Gawn so far this year. Positives and negatives about both but I was a bit more impressed by Spencer's fitness, pressure and handling of the work load. Gawn will be great and in many aspects already is (that moment he was in the centre square fending off two GWS defenders marking and playing on to kick the goal was epic), but at this stage in terms of fitness I'd play Spencer.
-
I'd swap it. Byrnes to play his natural position forward Kent to play in the mid and use that big kick of his
-
Unfortunately he is. There are two things I think of in regards to Jeff Hubris Duct Tape
-
I thought you and Jeff had a bit of a bromance happening? Such memorable quotes included: "Id have Kennett in a heartbeat." "In -... Jeff Kennett - President... That would be my dream" "pretty sure that Kennett will be a Melbourne supporter as soon as he becomes president" "I reckon he would comfortably win the vote." "Kennett would never have copped that 500k fine if he was our president" "anyone who actually thought Kennett was serious when he said we should merge with North must have rocks in their head" [my personal favourite]

Haha Jamar wasn't that bad around the Holland and Bartram period. It's only now where he refuses to kick and passes it off, most often into worse positions, and when he does have to kick is leg is bent and the ball flops 20m. This year I'd say Jamar is the worst, Howe is second (only walks back three paces off the mark and it gets spoilt because he is too close, and if not its some lofty hospital kick which gives the opposition more than enough time to create a contest), Blease is third (constantly turns it over, cant hit a target 15m away).

I don't think that Williams would be a good fit. If Neeld struggled to win over the majority of the group with his frankness and personality I dont see how Williams could do any better. People need to consider other factors than just the coach's CV.
-
Surely the worst kick in the AFL at that time has to go to Ben Holland!
-
That 5 year plan will go perfectly with our 3 year plan we are half way through.
-
What would you pay a board member, and for how many positions?
-
Toeriffic. We will toetally struggle without him... particularly because we found out toeday that Viney is still out.
