Is there a way for clubs to research what band of comp pick a player would be worth. Surely as a club you would approach the decision makers and try to get an indication. I would suggest that anything around the 20 mark would reduce our efforts to retain Sylvia.

Fairly simple generic statement froma coach which would be understood by most. "Required" meaning that there is a place on the list for him, there are always conditions attached. If he demanded 700k a year for 4 years I think we would find other more pressing "requirements"

Perhaps Roos signing isn't a great thing for Sylvia at the MFC.

My initial feeling when I read that is what is Dustin doing that is causing the concern? Why has the club taken this unusual action and what has the kid done to prove that he no longer needs to be watched closely? Hardwick, Williams and the brains trust at the RFC aren't stupid. He is a very, very good footballer and you don't have this many clubs pulling thier interest after doing some research for no reason. There is a lot of speculation going on re Dustin, I won't speculate even though I have my own suspicions but something is clearly amiss.

I thought in this game it would make a difference and it did. If the game was played again I would tip freo.

True they will have holes to fill. I do really rate their young talent. They have some scary young and mid career footballers.

If I could be bothered I would find the figures that would show the Geelong and Hawthorn flags aren't the norm The Swans lost one in 06 as well. Experience counted today with turnovers and golakicking yips costing Freo when they clearly had the team to win that game. Freo are going to be a powerhouse for a while to come.

I would trade Howe on the premise that I reckon he is one player that we could actually get more for than he is actually worth and we have greater needs. Having said that it's unlikely to happen this year.

I knew what you were getting at and if we lose Sylvia i think the club will view anything coming back the other way as completely relevant. My guess would be something in the 30's, 20s would be great and anything in the teens would be a massive win and would be inviting a lot of wtfs from other clubs. That depends on how it is offset by any FAs we pick up ourselves.
-
That would be ideal, either Jones or his ilk.

If you are talking about Shaw on output alone you are comparing one of the best and most consistent half backs to a struggling half forward who has only momentary impact in a few games a year. Shaw has proven to be a much better footballer, there is no comparison.

There are several reasons for our poor on field performance. One is our failure to develop the young talent on the list, another is our failure of our senior players to compete consistently and the other is injury. Along with other senior players, Sylvia has failed to compete with the top players for many years. The performances just aren't there. I think it's the right time for both parties to part. We seriously over-rate our own sometimes.

Pick three would be hilarious, pick 18 still extremely humorous. But you never know the AFL might give us a bit of mercy due to the PP not being granted. Then probably not. If there is a way to eke out a genuine young midfielder out of losing Sylvia then I'm all for it.

Like so many of the draft picks of that time, one dimensional and not built or wired to play the modern game. Which is why the likes of Zaharakis, who has a more complete, less flashy game have overtaken him. Needs to re-invent himself.

Would not be surprised if Colin is Roos' type of captain.- 36 replies

From wiki: "Fitzroy Roos made his senior VFL debut for Fitzroy in Round 4 of the 1982 season against Sydney, the club he would eventually move to 13 years later. Also making his debut along with Roos was 16-year-old Gary Pert,[3] who became one of Roos' best teammates.[4] In Round 9, he was named at full-forward against St Kilda and kicked seven goals in a 47-point win. In 1986, Roos polled a career high 16 votes in the Brownlow Medal to finish runner-up. He ended his career with 121 Brownlow votes (98 with Fitzroy and 23 with Sydney). Roos was appointed captain of Fitzroy in 1988, and led the club in 122 games until 1994. During his playing career at Fitzroy, Roos was selected as an All-Australian in 1985, 1987, 1988, 1991 (as captain) and 1992 (as captain). He also represented Victoria in State of Origin as captain. Roos left Fitzroy at the end of 1994 to join Sydney. He cited financial difficulty, the departure of key players (such as Gary Pert to Collingwood) and the club's relocation to the Western Oval as the main reasons for moving to Sydney.[4] Sydney Roos joined Sydney in 1995 on a three-year contract.[4] He finished his career at the Sydney Swans with 87 games and 19 goals in 1998. While Roos was at the Swans, he was one of Sydney's best in the 1996 AFL Grand Final loss to North Melbourne. He again qualified as an All-Australian in 1996 and 1997. In his playing days, he was often cheered by supporters with a distinctive, deep rolling roar of "ROOOOOOS!". However this tradition was halted after an incident involving West Coast Eagles captain John Worsfold, in which Worsfold bumped Roos off the ball before yelling "ROOOOOS!" to the Sydney cheersquad." 7 times all Australian, 7 goals as a 16 year old (correction 18 year old), 121 votes in the brownlow including a runner up, club and Victorian captain. Rose coloured glasses ay.

So, where to from here with pick 2?
jabberwocky replied to Whispering_Jack's topic in Melbourne Demons
Yep. Don't give up pick 2 unless it's for the best midfielder of all time. -

Cross might only be on the list for 12 months, the player at pick 2 needs to be a 10 year premiership player whether it be a fresh kid or one that has just started cooking. I would hope and expect that it would have no bearing on the decision.
