Can we change the thread title to something a bit gentler to kick off the discussion ? Just those two words together without warning made my stomach heave

No you're not. This is Jon Ralph's personal crusade. Wish he would STFU & concentrate on trying to write a decent article about footy.

Training - Monday 19th December, 2011
Go the Biff replied to Whispering_Jack's topic in Melbourne Demons
I always thought he lost a bit of zip when he blew his second hammy. Those thrilling rundowns pretty much dried up. After that the midfield / defence experiment started & perhaps it was thought that for Davey & the team, it was better to focus on his other great asset, his field kicking, rather than his out & out speed. There is another thread which offers a reason for the manner in which Davey is training, allegedly from a "source". I hope it's right because (providing the hammies hold), I think Flash going back to the future will be critical for our forward line. Enjoying this thread though. Wonderful combination of information & entertainment -
Jolly was hardly in his prime when he left. He'd managed to relegate himself to third string behind White & Jamar. He then spent several years as Sydney's #2 ruck before he became a quality player. The Wiz hurt. My cousin's then 8yo son idolised him. When told Jeff had left, he silently went into his bedroom & tore down the many Wiz posters that covered his walls.

Ross Brewer. Probably belongs in the coodabeens thread as well. Glenn McLean left Melbourne as a ruckman on the rise but promptly disappeared up his own arse.

Yep, the more the merrier. Knowing that they're there would be good. Knowing who they are doesn't worry me. Bring on the anonymous benefactors.

Point well made. If Scully turns out to be the player we recruited him to be, then we have been bent over. In return we will get something like a Ziebell or a Cunnington. Good players but not stars. We need a star to make a difference to our midfield & that's what Scully was recruited to be. He was considered the best player of his year. Now if the rules had been along the lines of ok, you lost your #1 pick, here is John Patton in a Melbourne jumper, I'd feel we'd been given like for like. Best player of his year for our best player of his year. What we lose then is invested development. I can cop that.

If, fitness, salary etc are worked out then Absolutely The OP's hypothetical was that in six years $cully was one of the ten best players in the comp Who would think their team or club would benefit by knocking back one of them

Interesting. Prefer to keep Howe forward but would be happy to see Ricky P in the mids. Ricky slacks off too much as a forward. Sure, 13 inside 50 tackles one week but jack the next. Seems to easily get on very good terms with himself. THE harder Ricky has to work, the better he plays. Understand your reasoning though, Howe does look to be one of our better distributors of the footy. McKenzie needs a big year. While we all admire his effort & defensive pressure, he doesn't do much with the footy. And has a few like mates. God we need class in there. Morton, for the entire summer when he's not lifting weights, devouring steaks & protein shakes should be studying video of Daisy Thomas who works his arse off running end to end. Reckon Morton could be damaging in that role, particularly if he's allowed to deliver the ball long & deep into the forward 50. If he gets bored with Daisy he can dust off an old VHS of Matty Febey as he patrolled the members wing. Just worked up & down the ground all day.

If the AFL are keen to put the new franchise up on show first, I like the idea of GC v GWS. Would be nice to see Gold Coast on top of the ladder after Round 1. Good for the game & all that & GC get their moment in the sun (pardon the pun)

I also see Gawn as Jamar's replacement & suspect he will be drip fed senior games along the way. He needs a solid year in the VFL as Casey's #1 ruck - a position he hasn't made his own yet given his late start to the season. I also reckon that Martin would make a CHB to be reckoned with. Will be fascinating to see how Neeld sets them up next year.

2011 Player Review - # 29 Michael Newton ®
Go the Biff replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
As I recall the three of them were bottom age recruits, prior to the minimum age being lifted. I think Bate was marginally underage & had to apply to the AFL for permission to enter the draft. Newton was always a speculative pick.- 101 replies

If the GC go at this then we'll have done well. I would love to get this kid. Some are saying he's a Beamer type - I tend to think of him more as a James Kelly type who's good both in clearances and also on the edge, receiving & creating. We need more quality mids.

Wasn't having a sling. The writer has put his slant on a 12 minute interview & picked out quotes to suit. He did say he preferred the Crows to Port because of the resources they had available.

Same here. The 3AW interview is worth a listen though

2011 Player Review - # 1 Matthew Warnock
Go the Biff replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
In his defence that's often because he's being given nothing to kick to. Warnock is a serviceable AFL standard full-back. Very much a one position player. He's just unlucky that he plays a position where the club is well stocked. I hope he finds another club & does well. Think he'd be great at GC helping out Bock until some of the younger Suns defenders mature.- 18 replies

Not a bad effort given he lost Merrett for nearly all of the season & Adcock for a fair chunk of it.

Not convinced our playing group has a great record in selecting leaders. I'm old school on this. The coach picks his captain. That ensures your leaders are on the same page.

Howe. Has current form. Gets points with one percenters even when he's not getting heaps of footy Darling's tapered off over the past month or more. I've benched him & am thinking of trading him Tappy had dropped off a bit when he got hurt. The sub risk you mentioned is a factor as well

Suspected ACL. To have an MRI tomorrow. If it's a re-co I think it's his second in addition to numerous shoulder issues. Poor bugger can't take a trick
