  1. The point I was making to Redleg was that the two clubs were clearly tampering with the draft system for the benefit of Port Adelaide who reaped this year's trade bonanza and Essendon also got a bonus pick out of it as well. Good luck to them. I'm so inured to this rubbish we're being fed by the AFL that I really don't care any more.
  2. In hindsight, we should have given Geelong a pick in the 60's or 70's for Byrnes. At least we then would have gotten a better pick for the other two.
  3. I hope this isn't true because the kid has talent and this will bite us on the bum hard.
  4. I recall the article Denham mentioned above and I also happened to be driving and listening to SEN yesterday when he delivered, not for the first time, his Melbourne Bears diatribe and I just wanted to make a few points. If Denham expected miracles from club which in 2011 was accused of playing "bruise-free" football, which capitulated by 186 points to another club, which had players who were said to be at odds with "two administrators in particular", which had the well-documented off field issues to which he referred in his article on top of a long injury list then he is as delusional as he comes across on radio and in print. Now, he's completely misreading the club's current recruiting strategies. He applauds the Bulldogs for keeping intact their early draft picks, congratulates Collingwood for accumulating picks 17, 18 and 20 and condemns Melbourne for giving away early picks to get the players its been targetting over recent weeks. That's bollocks for two reasons. Firstly, the free agency and trade periods aren't over yet and we all know that the situation with available picks can and will change all the way through to 26 October. Secondly, circumstances have conspired to give Melbourne what are currently pick 4 plus Jack Viney (a genuine 2012 top 5 player) plus an All Australian Under 18 KPP in Jesse Hogan (widely acknowledged as equal to at least a 2013 top) plus Dominic Barry who blitzed in the Draft Combine. Good luck to the Bulldogs with their picks and their $10m debt (compared to our substantial surplus thanks to Jimmy, his board and many loyal Demons who believe their club does stand for something) but will they top that with their three first round selections? And will Collingwood beat that with 17, 18 and 20? "Delusional Denham" might try to work that one out but I suspect his dislike of the club to blind him from coming to a knowledgeable conclusion on such a simple matter. But it's in the area where one would expect a journalist to be at his absolute best that Denham really made a fool of himself yesterday. He went on and on about Dawes not being worth the $500kpa that Melbourne was paying him. Those comments came less than 24 hours after Melbourne list manager Tim Harrington told Trade Week Radio that the figures being quoted on Dawes' contract were completely off the mark. One would expect a decent journalist to be aware of such things and not to cite dodgy figures when making his argument. Mind you, one would not expect that of Denham who is to journalism what the Brisbane Bears were to football.
  5. Oh ... and please be in attendance ½ hour before the scheduled start of your first game i.e 10.30 with gear. And Rollo ... the final paragraph of your post is unnessary and needs to be deleted. We need to stay focussed and positive. I'm not interested in what happened in the past. Cheers and thanks!
  6. I'm bringing my 7 year old grandson so no inspirational address or anything remotely like one although I might go with "DO SOMETHING!" at some stage. I've warned the kid not to utter any expletives and players are banned from smoking at half time. Cheers guys
  7. As rpfc pointed out above, Adrian Anderson was quoted by Jon Pierik in the Age - Saints in the dark over Goddard plans:- ''We confirm that the compensation formula will produce a points rating for players based on two factors: 1) new contract of the free agent and 2) age of the free agent. ''Draft picks will be allocated to clubs based on the net total points for free agents lost and gained during the transfer period. Draft picks will be allocated to one of five places: first round, end first round, second round, end of second round and third round.'' The criteria are very simple in the case of the compo for Moloney/Byrnes. They are both of similar age and therefore the only aspect that comes into play between Moloney/Byrnes on the matter of compensation is what they are going to be paid and the length of their contracts.
  8. So what's behind this Farren Ray no certainty to leave St Kilda? It could mean exactly what the article says but it could also mean the manager's fishing for more money for his client.
  9. Frankston has been a constant VFL cellar dweller in recent years but the club has produced a few interesting draft hopefuls - Leigh Osborne uses Frankston Dolphins to boost his AFL dream.
  10. This bloke was considered a good thing to be drafted in 2011 but missed out altogether and wasn't even considered in the rookie draft. Now, he's making a concerted effort for redemption - Snubbed junior sends message. Nelson looks to have good pace which might put him in the frame for drafting by Melbourne.
  11. One thing about poor disposal and decision-making is that there is often an element of confidence in one's teammates involved as part of the reason. In a poor team, mistakes happen more often and even the best of players make them. Not saying that his disposal is perfect, but I'd like to think that as the team gets stronger overall, Nicho will improve in this area.
  12. Rumpole. You're appointed Senior Counsel in the event that we need to run this in the Supreme Court. However, do we know what criteria are applied to determine the compensation?
  13. According to Mitch's tweets which appear from time to time, he seems to be on track with his recuperation.
  14. I don't know much about Daniel Stafford but I found this story while doing some reading on footy in the NT - Redtails gun gets Star nod
  15. One of my all time favourites but I do question the part of the story about kicking the late goal against Hawthorn that got us into the finals. Pretty sure that happened in 1964 and not 1959 and that it was the second last game that season. It was also interesting to note the decision of the MFC chairman of selectors in 1968 that Hassa didn't have two years left in him at 28 years of age. Hassa had been the club's leading light along with Stan Alves for a few years and we hadn't been travelling very well. His departure saw us return to rock bottom in 1969 and we continued to struggle for years.
  16. ... and I smell an article written by Jay Clark.
  17. On the question of FA compensation I heard Terry Wallace state on radio today that Melbourne might get very little compensation for Moloney because the club played him at Casey for a few games this year. The rationale was that if we're playing him there then he wouldn't be worth much. I don't know if the powers that be would see it that way because it's also hard to dismiss a recent club b & f and 19 vote Brownlow season which has to be factored into the equation. By the same token, how do you then take into consideration the amount of offset you allow for taking Shannon Byrnes? After all, Moloney only played four games at VFL level and still managed 15 at AFL level with some good stats in some areas while Byrnes hardly saw any AFL action at all. Further, players are sent to the VFL for various reasons, not necessarily directly related to ability as a player. I'm not expecting the compensation for Moloney to be massive but given the sort of deals that we're seeing in trades, a second rounder would not be out of the question. I expect the Jarod Rivers compo to be slightly better given his consistency in the past couple of seasons and the position he plays.
  18. I've closed this thread because there's already another one here which is far more up to date.
  19. Have you though that perhaps we weren't prepared to get screwed over for either player?
  20. He'd really be in strife if Denham announced it.
  21. The article doesn't link Thomas with a swap for Moloney. Pie heads home to Perth
  22. Yes but to offset that is the fact that Collingwood needs to get rid of its contractual obligations to Dawes in order to continue to recruit and fit players under its salary cap. Also they can only accept what they're offered not what they want.
  23. Good result for Wellingham joining WCE, a club whose traditional culture should suit him right down to the ground.
  24. GWS tweeting they have 5 of the first 13 picks in the AFLDraft after securing a deal with the Dees.
