  1. Here's an interesting and comprehensive guide for the draft: CONTESTED FOOTY 2012 DRAFT GUIDE Not surprisingly, they suggest Melbourne will take Oliver Wines with pick 4 and Jack Viney with our second round pick as a father/son.
  2. Len Mann played in the 1960 premiership and was at the club in 1964. Not sure if he was injured that year but played very few games and definitely didn't play in the grand final. Anyway, he's my guess.
  3. According to Demonwiki:- Chris Farrell DOB: 26 March 1970 Games: 0 Goals: 0 From: Assumption College 191cm centre half-forward who was recruited in 1988 and remained on the list through 1991 but failed to play a senior game. Wore number 35 in 1990 and 1991.
  4. I couldn't even get in to this one now that I'm back working. Poor Ross. Looked like he was going to be a real champion. Played the first six games of 1966 as an 18 year old CHF and then did his cartiledge which put him out of business for more than a year. If he had the same injury today, it would be an atheroscope and back in business after 3 weeks.
  5. Fair dinkum, that's pathetic. You get hung for looking "grim-faced" these days? If looking grim-faced or disappointed after a game is what passes for "evidence" then wait till you see what Ray Finkelstein does to the members of the inquisition. This would be a joke but for the fact that our club needs to spend good money defending itself but the AFL won't widen this investigation to include several others who were involved in experimenting and didn't have much interest in winning when their seasons were shot. Pathetic!
  6. I'm loving this test despite the fact that the conditions are stacked in favour of the batsmen. I know these things happen on the Sub Continent but when was the last time a whole day's play went by without a wicket falling to a bowler over here?
  7. I think Gillies would be a good get for us. He comes from a strong and successful club and just look at the array of talent over there that was keeping him out of a senior game. Of the list of delisted free agents recently published in the media, he's one of the few I'd be considering.
  8. Firstly, I changed the title to this thread because I am sick and tired of these media bozos refusing to credit the Melbourne Football Club with the presumption of innocence. We have yet to be charged with anything. As far as I know the club hasn't been given the benefit of seeing the alleged evidence against it or to respond. How can anyone say in those circumstances that we've "escaped penalties". Penalties happen when you've been found guilty of something, not before you've even been charged. Secondly, take note of this: I know this bloke and all I will say is that he's pretty much the best in the business. We're in good hands to deal with and repel the disgraceful attacks on the club we've witnessed in the media in the past month.
  9. Taught him everything he knew about football.
  10. Demons impressed by teenager Jesse Hogan's honesty and character as they look long term
  11. The training caravan moves to Casey Fields tomorrow (Monday) morning at 10.15am. Is this in solidarity with the ailing Casey Scorpions or is it to acclimatise Jesse Hogan to his new home for the next twelve months? Are there any Demon fans out Casey way who are going to have a look for us and perhaps report?
  12. What I find interesting is the way the media has treated certain information relating to the investigation. On the one hand, you have the sensationalist way in which Caroline Wilson and others have dealt with their revelations including bold headlines, the use of emotive language with some inferences drawn from allegations which don't necessarily add up. We had the sinister sounding "vault", secret meetings with shadowy characters acting furtively to ensure that the readership adds one plus one to come up with three, four or five. On the other hand, the revelations countering the "vault" allegation such as that of Dean Bailey not only denying that he had ordered players to toss games but also that the alleged threats about the consequences of winning more than four games were actually part of a 30 second "aside" in a normally scheduled meeting and not a secretly called discussion specifically on the subject, is quietly tucked away in the middle of an article. Similarly with Ricky Petterd's statement that he knew nothing about players being told to not try to win. It seems that it's only the sensation seeking stories that get prominence. But I suppose we knew that anyway.
  13. Dick Wardill (skipper of MFC's first premiership team).
  14. Week in, week out and not just once every three or four weeks. At his age though you would have to wonder whether he has it in himself to make what would appear to be a massive sea change in attitude. Still ... miracles do happen and the coach is assembling some hard workers to set the example.
  15. The Sunday Herald Sun keeps the tanking controversy bubbling over with some words of wisdom - Tanking probe must go beyond Demons, says Ron Barassi Whenever the AFL's ready I'm willing to talk about how a former Carlton board member predicted three weeks in advance of the Kreuzer Cup that his club would end up getting the priority pick it so desperately needed to snare, not only Kreuzer but a big fish from another AFL club that was already committed to the Blues.
  16. Thanks George. I didn't watch much of it because I didn't have the opportunity to watch it live but I found it as fascinating as the first time I watched the Tiwi Bombers in their inaugural year in the NTFL competition (2006/7) when games used to be televised on ABC2. I wrote about them here. "The Tiwi Islanders might not be in AFL star class but they do play such an exciting, running game that it's often mind boggling. And what great cult heroes they're throwing up for the sparse audiences of this little known television station - names that roll off the commentators' tongues like Simon Munkara, Ephram Tipungwuti, Norman Pangirimini, Rupert Pupungameri, Thomas Simon and exciting youngsters Roy Farmer and Austin Wonaeamirri. It's all high scoring excitement where the goals flow all day. The last game I saw was a close high scoring affair against Wanderers who were in it until halfway through the third quarter of a game played in 32 degree heat and 70% humidity. That was when the Wanderers started frothing at the mouth and running up and down on the spot while the Bombers running brigade kept zipping around, continually playing on at all costs and pumping through goal after goal. It seemed so effortless that I was reminded of the old Harlem Globetrotters basketball exhibitions. The Bombers eventually won a 48-goal shootout 28.15.183 to 20.8.128 and the players made it look so easy - as if they were born to play." After a couple of years of this, someone in the ABC decided in his or her wisdom, to put an end to sport on that channel and I don't think anyone's watched it since. After watching parts of the game yesterday, I can see how it would be hard for established players from the NTFL to acclimatise to the AFL game. They're in fact, worlds apart. The Top End game is fast, open, free flowing and attacking. By contrast, the AFL game is often the opposite with its emphasis on defence and the added requirements and demands this imposes on training, strength and fitness. The end result is that the NT games are often more enjoyable watching (and I would imagine playing) than the AFL.
  17. Thanks BH. Like your observations on Mitch Clark. Let's hope he makes a quick recovery from that injury.
  18. A bit unfair that. He seems to have something in common with Cyril Rioli and Dom Barry in that they've done their schooling in Victoria and seem well settled here by now. A fair effort to make the Tiwi Bombers team at 16 and has done well in representative games.
  19. Ralph came from Frankston which in those days was in the Mornington Peninsula League so it could be him. Would have struggled against Coleman because Ralph was a winger.
  20. Back on Terra Firma and only because its the first one that comes into my head and I know he definitely played in three premierships, I'll say Hassa Mann
  21. At least that means the answer to the question can't be C Wilson.
  22. Hard to get the cigar with that one. Shane McGrath was at the club right throughout the 40s and would have retired by about the same time Coleman came onto the scene. The only thing they had in common would be that they both owned pubs. Shane had one in North Melbourne which I used to pass on my way to Uni.
  23. That means he comes from the Mornington Peninsula and played in either the late 40s/early 50s. I'll think about it while I'm on my flight home but that should be a sufficient clue to help someone like gsmith who would remember that era well.
  24. Actually on the way home but currently stranded at Coolangata Airport due to delays caused by a computer outage. I told them they could borrow my computer if it would help but got a polite refusal. George's real name was Theodoroulakes (or something like that) but it was shortened at some stage. Perhaps he was worried that Jack Dyer, who was commentating on 3KZ at the time, might have some trouble pronouncing the long version. He was one of many great hopes the club's had in the past 48 years but sadly, few have delivered. We're still waiting ... Is there a bar at this godforesaken airport?
