The 2019 Draft and Trade Targets Thread
I’d say if King was on the table saints would throw their first at GC to reunite the brothers. So we’d have to part with pick 2/3 which would rule out a downgrade.
-
Brad Hill
Freo managed to turn Lachie Weller into pick 2. Here’s hoping we’re a little smarter.

Brad Hill
I agree with this. The AFL surely realise they have enough young talent. They just need to keep it. A second rounder is far more likely. AFL also need to stop playing with the top end of the draft compo picks aside. Even they might come under scrutiny at some stage. There is a theory AFL will hand over pick 2 so they can secure Rowell and Anderson as best mates. Handing over a pick on the premise it has to be used on a certain player is effectively draft tampering. Yes I understand those two are at this point in time the standouts.

POSTMATCH: Rd 19 vs St. Kilda
Perhaps I should have said season to date. Richmond with destroy us. It’s going to get ugly.

POSTMATCH: Rd 19 vs St. Kilda
IMO easily our worst performance for the season. Last 3 weeks we’ve been in games until the end. Not sure how though last night. Saints scored 85 of 104 points from our turnovers. That’s outrageous.

Media scrutiny
We have credits in the bank. Last years finals and the injuries this year. If this happens next year pressure will come early.

Darren Burgess officially our new fitness coach.
Fantastic signing. And he’ll have them early now we’re not in finals. Hopefully gets this group up and firing come round one next year. Interesting to see what he can do with AVB.

WELCOME TO DEMONLAND - ED LANGDON
To be honest I think Freo will play hardball but he won’t attract anything more than our second rounder.

POSTGAME: Rd 18 vs West Coast Eagles
We certainly played some decent footy. But some of the turnovers and missed shots on goal killed us. Clarry back in form was great. But he’s still got to work on not handballing to a teammate about to get set upon. I thought pre game Lewis should get a defensive job on Hurn. With him out it surprised me he went to McGovern. But he did a decent job as a forward. Fritsch is such a natural forward. He played a fantastic game but missed a couple he could have kicked. His late turnover killed us. The backline was good. May has been an excellent addition and Lever started to get back to his intercepting best. Unfortunately Preuss isn’t a forward. Smith or Weideman in for him next week. We had some really good patches through the midfield and if we can carry that on throughout the remainder of the year we should be competitive. We clearly ran out of gas in the end but hopefully we can carry a bit of momentum into next week. Although the saints will be buzzing.

WELCOME TO DEMONLAND - ED LANGDON
Langdon would certainly compliment our side. But the player we need is Brad Hill. If the club thinks this list can get a flag then Hill is our man. Quick with elite skills. Also elite endurance. Wouldn’t give up pick 3 for Hill alone but we need to chase him. Im not convinced Collingwood will get Langdon. They apparently have their own cap issues. If we go for Langdon I wouldn’t be trading him for Brayshaw. At best it’s be an even deal. At worst he plays at 2018 levels at freo and we lose out big time.

The 2019 Draft and Trade Targets Thread
We’ve gone far too many inside types. Time to add some outside players and or small quick skillful forwards.

The 2019 Draft and Trade Targets Thread
Anderson. From what the so called experts say Rowell is the safer pick. Doesn’t have the ceiling of Anderson but almost certain to a very good player. However Anderson would not be a bust. Not a guarantee to be better than Rowell but has size and ability to play more outside. He’s also a goal kicker. Also a higher ceiling should he reach it.

Casey Demons v Northern Blues - Round 14
I suspect Spargo is suffering from the dreaded second year blues. Was quiet a handy player at times last year at AFL level. Talk of delisting him fairly premature.

Can we please get some small forwards
Lockhart knows how to kick a goal. But I wouldn’t mind him becoming a small defender option. Similar to a Laird. He can take a mark and always seems to be able to find space. And Aidan tidy kick. Our list really lacks dangerous forward options. Especially when Melksham is out.

Can we please get some small forwards
Agree. We desperately need a dangerous small forward who can apply pressure. Not sure Bedford and Chandler are ready this year or next. I wouldn’t be surprised if we had one lined up in he mid season draft but realistically Dunkley was too good to pass up. Recruiting a couple of these small forwards needs to be a priority along with someone with speed who can use the ball on the outside.

No Serious Damage for Gawn
I get the feeling Gawn will be channeling big Jimmy this week. Miraculous recovery to play Sunday.
-
CHANGES: Rd 16 vs Carlton
If fit Lever for Petty. If Gawn doesn’t get up then Preuss comes in. I’d like to see JKH get a solid block of footy. Last chance for his career at Melbourne. Likely for ANB. Dunkley is one I’d also consider.

Come Whatever MAY
I love what May brings to the team. Plays tall and small. Has speed and his kicking is a weapon. His leadership is first class. Sets the standards on field and has high expectations. The challenge for May is to drive standards in the off season and pre season.

A loss to Carlton ...
If we lose to them without Cripps and what was an in form Curnow it’ll be interesting to see Goodwin’s response. We lost to an in form St Kilda early on when we were really struggling. But we haven’t lost a “coach killer” this year. Mainly because we’ve been so bad the only game in that category would be either GC or Carlton. Although we were extremely lucky to beat the suns! IMO Goodwin is safe this year and there’ll definitely be coaching changes. A fitness team overhaul also to happen. A loss to Carlton will bring embarrassment though. That’s for sure.

The Mystery of Aaron Vandenberg
I certainly rate AVB best 22. Joel Smith has massive potential. Maynard wouldn’t be getting games. Tim Smith has never had a decent stretch without injury. Maybe it’s a figure of speech. But it’s about concerns with recruiting guys whose bodies can’t handle the rigorous AFL training. And having multiple players on the list at one stage in this boat. Not necessarily concerned these guys all missing is costing us games. I take your point about getting in young talent. We need to use our first this year to bring in elite talent.
-
The Mystery of Aaron Vandenberg
Vanders played a huge part in us making the finals and winning 2. I have real concerns this guys body just can’t end up to the rigours if AFL footy. Just keeps breaking down. I have similar concerns with Maynard and potentially Joel and Tim Smith. I hope I’m wrong.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - STEVEN MAY
A key defender with speed and great kicking skills. I realised watching the replay back how much we needed him. Also has obvious leadership. Always directing players in the back half.
-
Oscar McDonald
It’s odd the Omac hasn’t played at any level in the past two games. Not on the injury list. I was thinking perhaps some time away from playing. He has been struggling and no doubt that would take its toll.

Fans Behaving Badly?
I heard someone in the MCC call out ‘chewy on your boot’ yesterday.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - JAY LOCKHART
Really like the way Lockhart goes about it. I think we’ve definitely found a player. Interesting to see how he goes off a full pre season.
