Jack Viney on Re-Signing & Geelong Offer
Engorged Onion replied to Wiseblood's topic in Melbourne Demons
I get that this notion is a personal and lived experience for folk... AND as AFL clubland is full of this sort of schtick, he should have known and acted this way since he was 18... ie: it's not a new realisation. Ugh, that's unfair on Jack - Jack probably already knows this.. its about the demonstrations of it - he is amazing physically on the field... not sure in other areas however...perhaps that what he is delineating? -
I'd love a fans poll on the following Do the current generation of players have more of an allegiance to their own career (success) and payments throughout vs staying at one club? My take would be 80% - 20% ie: It's more of a US model than a 1900-2014 VFL/AFL model?

How come @Demonland? What about Brad fits with this role? (Not accusatory, genuinely interested).

Strategic improvement in the way we play
Engorged Onion replied to Altona-demon's topic in Melbourne Demons
Ripping first post @Altona-demon - perhaps it would fit into this other ripping thread below - as alluded to by @Diamond_Jim -
Fair enough @SFebes I just cannot comprehend how outside pundits have a feel of things (stubborn etc), vs those internally (who actively seek external advice) and then those internally, choose to disregard perspectives on said coach, and hire other people to advise, to a no win situation.
-
So what I don't get - is the fact that there is a perspective that Goodwin listens to.... no one and he is stubborn Ergo, if this is all true, irrespective of who is brought in, he will still listen to no one andhe is still stubborn If this is all true... then those appointing Yze (or whoever) are either really [censored] dumb (because irrespective of who is appointed...yadda yadda yadda), or perhaps the mythology that Goodwin listens to no one, is simply mythology.
-
I presume perhaps he has been removed from the site? He has been rather quiet since his diatribe. And no one, aint no one, who can slag of Yze...
-
Hey Coq (with a ck?), whats with the patronising attitude? Presuming you were alive when he played, ergo you'd be old enough to understand that a footballing career doesn't make a coaching career. Just ask Al Clarkson... or umpteen other premiership coaches or line coaches, or any coach, it's an invalid argument. It's fine that you don't rate Yze... just don't equate your views on his playing career, with all the growth and acumen he now has as a 40+ year old man, vs a 20-30 year old. Unless of course, you're either a) in the system and think he is a [censored], or b) his best mate and think he is a [censored].

Hi, long time observer of your posts... Are there any redeeming qualities about this club you allegedly support?

Dees Reviewing Senior Footy Department Positions
Engorged Onion replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Oh FFS - so only serious reviews annually occur when a premiership is won? To the premiership winners? Or perhaps the top 8? You are old enough and wise enough to understand there are a whole range of things outside of your control - these things have been pointed out repeatedly to you and to others throughout the year. One last time for just 'some of the' factors (reasons, excuses) that have impinged on our season. Essendon AND Melbourne had a bye - at the beginning of a 15 game stretch... no other teams had that disadvantage Travel, multiple 'hubs' compared to a range of other teams that had limited travel...i could list what that impacts but i shant. If you think that these things do NOT affect the playing group and capacity to perform, and that it's all due to 'coaching' , you're either naive or stuck in 1966. As you said, Lenny would be a ripping fitness coach for you :) Still the most 'hardest' and most perpetually disappointed poster on here. Love ya guts. -

I take your point, mind, who are the bears? who are Jeelong? -
On the subject of Bruce - what the [censored] is a "hat trick" doing in the lexicon of our game? @Rab D Nesbitt? @Skuit? @Wobbly Bob? Gents, doyens, pedants, is it appropriate language?

Whilst I agree (and hell, its what every club does every year, so there is nothing knew with your statement) , I can't help but put Lenny McClean's voice to your posts... particularly from 4.22 in this youtube link...yeah I know I pop it up every 3 months or so :) -
Mmmm, I wasn't disputing Merrett and his talent at all. I think he would be a fine addition. It's just a reality that to bring someone in to an already (on paper) stacked midfield... someone needs to leave. Either Gus or Viney (for vastly different reasons) I felt were the 'most' expendable from our midfield at this current time. It appears it will be Gus**from what I have read... no sources, no nuthin'.
-
How on earth do you keep abreast of what everyone posts :)
-
On paper- and I know you (and everyone here)knows this, but from a midfield perspective there needs to be personnel changes and becoming more dynamic in game. I was watching the game last night (Geelong, Port) and it just felt such a scrappy game... BUT the scrappyness is the norm these days, its not free flowing... its not how it would have been 17-20 years ago from Voss, Lappin et al, nor even WCE or Hawthorn's much vaunted midfield. First game of the finals, my thoughts were. The capacity to win the contested ball relentlessly is an imperative... And to get it to skilled users on the outside. Now as pundits on here, we all get that... and Goodwin and the FD are moving in that direction. But each year over the last few, theyve had to address at draft time...the question is, which problem do you address first, and whichever one that is... who is best available at that particular year to best address it, knowing full well that not everything will be addressed when you want it. defensive frailties - now resolved one out of two wingers - now resolved elite (ish) ball users - unresolved.
-
Ugh, I hate saying this, but I believe from what has been said here and elsewhere, Gus is gone. That's the impression I have. I concur with you about his limited flexibility (Gus's) - which is why, if I was Gus, I would want to go elsewhere to play where I wanted to play. There would be no shortage of suitors.

It's funny the ol riddler, I jumped on this forum 3/4 years ago at end of season and saw the Riddler and thought to myself, "This is awesome! What a website! What verifiable scoops!'... and then he went AWOL... and here I am, still, bereft of any useful post and preseasons gossip :( Riddler, if you are still out there under a pseudonym, please re-enage :) after all, it has been a pretty $hite 2020.

"The third year is fatal." This article is an overall analysis about a player worth to a club (Liverpool) AND also delves into keeping the momentum going for a club. A quote struck me - and it's for all clubs, not just Grand Final winning ones in AFL. "Players become familiar with a manager so his words lose their power; an intensity that once was motivational begins to grate; opponents work sides out – and in the age of detailed data analysis that is a process that has accelerated significantly." My views are less about Goodwin, but more about 'clubland' overall. How to keep talented players in a the right age profile together, to keep pursuing performance vigorously, when 'hunger' ebbs and flows (be it week to week, season to season and in game) when there is a familiarity with a coach and 'his' responses.
-
@Wobbly Bob congratulations on having 1/3 of your posts thus far being about the pedantry of language, as I am a pedant myself. I also use the word laconic (knowing full well its original meaning) for the laid-back, languid looking individual. Is it such a crime? Because we all know what people are meaning... it's an adjective...and it has morphed over time. Just like these words 'gay' 'cloud' 'sick' Considering many many many many many many many people use the word now for alternate meanings, isn't this the beauty of language evolving? *I had a moment with my 4.5 year old this morning, who wanted to play the board game 'Risk' with me, but wanted his own rules... I initially said, that's not how you do it mate? Then I realised I was putting my 'rules' for living, onto a 4.5 year old, who was flexible enough to see that things could be done differently...and yet the game could still be played with just as much fun. I reflected to myself that it was far more my problem, than his.

Unless of course - Preuss and the club agreed it was an apprenticeship under Max (which may come with a version of cache in itself...learning from the best in the business) whereby he was the understudy, filling in when required, with a view to move on, when the time was right for both parties.
