And the ones that are can always be palmed off for a late pick if someone is even remotely interested in them.

Yes, because Stewart Dew is in the system and has been for years, something Ling doesn't have. I agree with you in that Jackson and Roos will have plenty of input into the selection and they know what they're looking for, and Ling may well be that man, but he still presents a greater risk than most. Doesn't mean he won't make it as, like you say, he ticks boxes. I'm just not sold on him yet and believe there would still be an element of risk in appointing him.
-
Just like we took a punt on Neeld and Bailey? It goes both ways. I like Lingy, just not sure if we are in a position as a club to take that risk.
-
The last part concerns me too - are we in a position to take a risk on someone who hasn't really been in the system as yet as opposed to someone who has AFL coaching experience?
-
So one minute we've got someone calling for the return of Troy Davis, now someone else wants Brock McLean brought back... what's next? Issac Weetra to fill our small forward role from 2015 onwards?

You beat me to it! EPL in August, NBA in late Oct/early Nov. Can't wait!

David Neitz. We ALL rest our case.

Players to target at the end of the year
Wiseblood replied to JackVineyForPresident's topic in Melbourne Demons
Is he though? Quick to judge after a season and a half. If Barry gets another contract after the same time then Toumpas deserves more time as well. If this was his fourth year then I'd be all for letting him move on, but not at this stage of his career. The kid is barely 20. -
For some supporters the thought of MORE picks and potentially MORE young kids with 'talent' is all that gets them through the season.

Players to target at the end of the year
Wiseblood replied to JackVineyForPresident's topic in Melbourne Demons
Yet there are some on here desperate to see Tapscott do well today, even though he has had 5 years on the list, and in the same breath give up on a player who hasn't been on the list for 2. We are so impatient these days. -
That's why the most important decision to be done once the season is over is the selection of Roos' successor. If we get that wrong...

Gee, it's picket fence again, starting a thread about his own views that he's mentioned in every other thread 2,000 times. Great. I'm beginning to think you're related to Saty. And for the record we clearly need help all over the ground, not just in terms of 'inside grunt'.

We got rolled in a game that meant nothing to us on a cold Saturday afternoon. Not surprising in the slightest. More list changes to come, still the same players not doing enough and we're tired. Viney and Riley showing something the only real positives for the day. I'm tired of watching us though, going to be a struggle from here.

They did this back in about '05, before social media, by using the Geelong Ablettiser to give the club absolutely heaps, saying we aren't good enough, we can't win at Simonds and we hadn't since 1988 etc etc. that was the day we rolled them by a point when Egan missed after the siren. Never enjoyed a win more than that. We have a 1% chance of repeating the dose this time around by Geelong supporters are the biggest bunch of dickwads I've ever come across.
-
Because he is average. Very, very average. Would not improve the list one bit.
-
I thought he would have another year left in him but it's still great news. Has been one of the best gets of the year by a mile.

Players to target at the end of the year
Wiseblood replied to JackVineyForPresident's topic in Melbourne Demons
I could honestly have said that he has a 20 year contract there and has said every day for 3 years he will never leave and you would still have this belief that, because he considered us last year, that he will do so again. I'd love Rockliff at Melbourne, who wouldn't, but he re-committed to the Lions, signed a new deal and told everyone how behind the club he is. We might call, and we will rightly be told to nick off. No chance. -

That was last year. He has since had a crack at all the people that left and said he is Brisbane to the core. I know Roos makes things better in the trade period but Rockliff isn't coming now and the Lions won't trade him. -

No. Would be the hypocrite of the century if he left the Lions now. No chance of him leaving. -
With all due respect... he is not even close to being up to it at AFL level. Plenty of other options out there.

Players to target at the end of the year

That would be the only warning sign to me. If he has played most of this season injury free then he is worth a look but otherwise I think there might be better options out there. -

I said a few pages back I'd be happy to have a look at Sewell but I think you're pretty close to the mark with this comment P-man. His body is close to done and he will more than likely retire than play on. And while the Cross experiment has worked we need to be careful as it won't always work - someone like O'Keefe, who a few have mentioned, makes me nervous as he has clearly lost plenty of his pace and ability to play at the top level and I don't think he would have a positive impact on field for the club. If we go for that experience it needs to be someone who still has the ability to stay fit and contribute, something both Sewell and O'Keefe probably can't do for us. -
The first reply was condescending and Nasher answered his question by saying that he has seen him play. What is there to miss? His kicking action isn't flash but he isn't a midfielder, he is a deep forward whose general strike rate in front of goal isn't all that bad. He is worth a look for the right price.

Match Preview and Team Selection - Round 17
Wiseblood replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
People will pull anything out of thing air about our players these days. The three that come in this week, for example, are well ahead of JKH and deserve their chance. It seems unfathomable that a first year player might have to continue to learn his craft in the magoos for a few weeks these days... -
Yes. It rarely happens but if another club wants him then they can do it... I think... Unless a club nominates him as a promoted rookie prior to the draft. Someone else might know a bit more than that.
