  1. I, for one, havn't heard the speech, and I imagine that most people would want to have heard it before commenting on what he said. In relation to coglin calling the Herald sun, it appears to me as if all he is doing is trying to cause a problem and destabilise the club. A couple of people here have vouched for him, but I cannot understand the reason for calling up a newspaper to make this public. Why not sort it with the club, in house, directly? Why cause a fuss in public (read: media)?
  2. i think the problem with the stat is that people don't understand what it means. my understanding is that a kick that goes over 40 metres to a 50% or better contest (ie 1 on 1) is considered effective. shorter kicks have to go to a free man, or be marked, for them to count. in that way, you can have 20 effective disposals, where every kick is turned over, but as long as it is long and to a 50-50 contest it counts. It is a measure of whether players are picking the better options (long kicks, to advantage or short safe kicks), or the poor options (bombing it long to a mountain of defenders or kicking short high risk to a contest).
  3. add to that, where is there any evidence of any cronulla player doing anything illegal? my sources tell me that the female in question went to work the next day and bragged about it to her work mates. only after time had elapsed and she realised that maybe what she did was embarrassing did she report it to the police. the police spoke to her back when it happened (7 years ago i thought) and again when she contacted them recently. both times they decided that no offense had been committed. i am not commenting on the moral right/wrong of any act that took place. but then again, i am not going to comment the morality of swingers, single parent families, the lack of water flowing down the murry, wind turbines affecting local bat populations or the gunns pulp mill in tasmania. but if the police believe no offense was committed, what right does anyone have to judge the behaviour, or sack someone, for something that happened nearly a decade ago, and was investigated at the time?
  4. i thought it was fantastic before the game. we don't have many premiership captains left standing, for our club players like don are amongst the greatest. i was dissapointed that the minute was so short, it perhaps should have been called a 'moments silence'.
  5. exactly. the free kick paid against morton should not have been paid. incidental contact was not worthy of a free kick. the 50 was just an umpire being an [censored]. clearly noone heard the whistle, players from both sides played on, and it was 2-3 kicks before they realised a free had been awarded. that freekick cost us the game, it robbed us of momentum, and gave the dogs a 3 goal lead. my biggest concern throughout the day was how quick the umps were to ping us for holding the ball (see jones) when we tried to win a hard ball.

    Cale Morton

its not just the two games that make me happy. he has the most disposals of any player at melbourne so far this season (213, bruce has 207, and moloney and davey have 202). he is second in kicks, top 5 in handballs and number 1 for marks. edit: 7th in the league for disposals (6th for kicks, while davey is 1st for kicks)...and it is hard to believe that the traditionally bomb-it-long-without-looking moloney is actually 4th in the comp for handballs.
  7. where do we see grimes playing in 4-5 years? is he a half back flanker for his career or will he move into the midfield? if players like bleese and strauss come through, will he get a shot in the centre?
  8. not denying he'll play, but 2 weeks ago i heard him say the docs were telling him he was still 3-4 weeks off but he was feeling fine and was trying to convince the coaches he could play in 2... it will be interesting if it is greens call, or the coaches call!
  9. what you really want is someone to post you wheelans highlights from todays match. he nearly killed aker. aker is just lucky that he spun 270 degrees, not just 180 degrees and landed on his head.
  10. your post makes an assumption between what you saw and whether he will miss games or not. can you diagnose his injury? was it a cramp after playing a tough game for 4 quarters? when the club says he will miss, then everyone will agree he will miss. until then most people will preface their responses with 'if true'.
  11. no we don't. if he is uncontracted, he can go to GC without having to go to the draft like everyone else. otherwise, he must be traded like any other player. thats how i read it, and after watching the past few weeks i think he is wrong. it wont take until 2014.
  12. so he actually managed a full season without an injury? wow. hopefully he can repeat that in the future.
  13. thanks. if you are being sarcastic, im not sure why. tat is my 3 word summary of his game. did he do much else? not really. did he need too? no. he is a third or 4th gamer learning the craft. he spends most of his time in the forward pocket. if he kicked 2 every week id be stoked, despite what else he did.
  14. Bartram - disposal not strength Bate - needs consecutive performances Bruce - just cameron bruce Cheney - great return to afl Davey - uses pace well Dunn - a better game Grimes - only three games? Johnson - tired in end Jones - always works hard Maric - kicked two goals Martin - take first option McDonald - experience, not finesse McLean - form has improved Miller - no scoreboard pressure Moloney - tough and prolific Morton - our best youngster Petterd - should be crumber Robertson - competed, little effect Sylvia - poor when needed Warnock - did everything asked Whelan - our hardest player Valenti - servicable at best
  15. i think it is a problem that a lot of clubs have, do you celebrate the birthday (ie the completion of the year) or the annivsary year (ie during the anniversary season)? The being said, we have clearly changed our tune from 1859 to 1858. Can anyone remember far back enough to recall which year we celebrated our 100th year, or or 50th year? are their collectables from that?
  16. surely you jest. 22 games in a season? without getting injured? edit: he missed round 17, and played in the first final (we lost to essendon by 5 points). apparently he did get injured.
  17. i don't think people quite understand what is being said in this thread. the suggestion was for a training ground, complete with indoor gym facilities, swimming pool etc, to be built in the area which is currently being redeveloped, and known as 'docklands'. this has nothing to do with etihad stadium. the mcc are not offering us a full time training base. we cannot use the g for all our training sessions. the bubbledome will be a rectangular stadium, and we will have to share the outside ground with collingwood. as far as i know we are only planning on training at casey during summer. are we training there at the moment? what is the current situation? this suggestion has some merit, as it will keep melbourne in melbourne. that being said, if we lose the casey connection, we could lose potential supporter growth.
  18. can someone clarrify strauss' suspension? i thought he was rubbed out, but he is named on the bench in the seniors, and in the ressies, suggesting he is playing?
  19. bennel doesn't appear to be in the scorpions line up either

would be interested to here your thoughts on whether you think cale will be our best player shortly, and if so how long? he is a player i rate highly, and if he keeps up current form could well take out the bluey.

    McNamara

In a thread entitled 'McNamara'... you said: you then changed to start talking about cheney: so my response: is quite understandable. what world are you in? maybe you are just having trouble following the conversation, because you suddenly stopped talking about mcnamara and started talking about cheney as if they were the same person. for the record, both players are in their second year at the club, mcnamara has just turned 19, and cheney turns 20 at the end of the year. why would we delist either in their second year on the list? what is the point in taking them if we are not prepared to give them a chance to develop?

mcnamara was taken as a bottom age player (the youngest in the draft) who was expected to be a top draft pick the following year. he is a project player who is only the same age as a first year draftee this year. he has shown good form at vfl level, and appears to have lots of ability. why wouldn't he get a chane to show that?
  23. if we agree to this, it should not be for breakeven. we need to be financially induced to accept such an offer. moving to etihad should be no different to moving interstate. if it is not at the mcg it is not at our homeground. as a result i would expect we ask for that time of compensation. if there is a genuine concern, why not move st kilda versus melbourne from the GC to etihad in round 10? or round 13 north vs bulldogs? or round 13 essendon carlton (both TD tennants) but playing at the g? round 19 essendon v brisbane? i think if they are short availability for one match it should be bad luck. its not like they dont have a great run at home this year. these are some of the highlights of st kildas draw this year (on reflection, they have no excuse not to finish prominently on the ladder this year): • 15 of 22 games to be played at the Telstra Dome • The first time in five seasons the Club embarks on just one Perth trip • No game at the Gabba for just the second time in 12 years • Monday Night Football against Collingwood in Round 7 • A return to the Gold Coast for a home clash against Melbourne in Round 10 • Just one game each against the 2008 Grand Finalists, including playing Hawthorn in Tasmania • Home and away matches against Melbourne, Essendon, West Coast, Kangaroos, Sydney, Adelaide and the Western Bulldogs
  24. Didn't see this mentioned anywhere, and thought this was an appropriate thread to use. Before his injury on Sunday, I noticed Frawley pushing an opposition player over while he was trying to put his boot back on. (maybe la cras?). the ball was being thrown in so frawley kept knocking him off balance, pushing him around so he couldn't join in the play. I thought this really demonstrated how much his confidence has improved the last few weeks. he is comfortable with himself at afl level, and feels like he belongs, enough that he can do things like this. It is great to see a bit of niggle in a young player, i'd love to see more mfc players get stuck in.
  25. basically, free kicks should be paid if it is dangerous. if it is falling across someone in a way that could injure them, let it go. if it is acidental, incidental high contact that wouldn't be noticed, let it go. if it is a dangerous practice ie clothes lining, even if it doesnt cause a problem, penalise it. there should be no such thing as 'winning' a free kick, ie going in head first to 'win' a kick, falling forward to cause the player to fall on you and 'winning' the kick. that is the problem. if it doesn't affect the game, dont pay it.
