  1. and tingay and his glass window? and brad symes broke both arms falling of a team mates car didnt he? hahaha post of the thread.
  2. Using your data from the update, there are: - approximately 576,000 club members in the AFL - The average club membership is ~ 36,000 - The MFC currently accounts for ~ 5.2% of memberships - Hawthorn accounts for 8.8% while Brisbane accounts for 4.4% Just some interesting stats...
  3. It was great to see the man on man work in the second half, because I have felt that we have lacked that for a while. I also think that if we decide to go man on man, we should bring the loose player (probably Davey) up the ground to man up on the spare opposition defender, which forces them to kick to a contest straight away, not give them time to find a contest that suits them or find a man who breaks away. I also agree with cards13, when playing the zone we dont run hard enough to apply the pressure. If you are zonging and notice a man loose away from the zone you should run to him to cut the option off. allowing uncontested possessions, even in the back half, allows a team to move the ball around until they can spot an option up field which breaks the zone down. The zone should be used as a way to force a turnover, and thus attack, not as a way to slow the game down.
  4. it is interesting that the fitzoy football club and the brisbane bears football club never really merged, however their football departments did. This was a big mistake, imo by the AFL as it was effectively a half-assed merger. it has however given the fitzroy football club a chance to continue on in melbourne, so perhaps its a good thing. i would prefer that any clubs which were asked to merge were allowed to drop into another competition ie vfl, while their football departments merged, and the other club 'offered' to take on some of heritage and traditions ie colours, monika, etc.
  5. i am with JK all the way on this one. Why do the umpires need numbers, or names announced before the game? When they hit big milestones, let the media talk about it, but otherwise the umpires should be one and the same. I don't care what the umpries calls the players as long as the players are happy with it. But this wouldn't be an issue if the umpires weren't miked up. i also agree with JK about how the AFL have caused problems by continually tinkering with the rules. It is not the AFLs job to counter coaches tactics. For over 100 years there were no major problems with the rules, coaches will find a counter to any tactic given a bit of time. If after 10 years there is a serious problem then a rule change could be considered. But the umpires and the public are all confused about how to adjudicate the game. Hands in the back for example used to be simple. You could not push a player in the back, from behind, or land on a player. Now you can sometimes as long as you use your shoulder or your forearm, and you get away with it as long as you 'roll' over a player. but othertimes you can get pulled up for either. Make the rules as simple as possible, and let the game evolve itself.
  6. maybe we could make a juice newton board, sort of like we have a drafting board at the end of the year?
  7. is that what sydney do?
  8. ive got no problem with the rule that a player cannot touch the umpire on purpose, especially while arguing a decision. but accidental contact when one stumbles?
  9. didn't realise he was still growing. i suppose it is quite reasonable to expect him to start filling out after he has finished growing up. will be very exciting if he does put on some bulk.
  10. the second shot was the harder one because he was kicking with his right foot, likely to slide it across goal. Given he had hooked the first one, it meant he had even less chance of nailing the second if he was hooking his drop punts.
  11. Read my post again. I said that yours was a good post in a good thread and replyed to it asking you more questions. I then asked you to join the Newton thread to hear your thoughts on him there. I didnt want to ask you about Newton in this thread because it would move it off topic and I didn't want to highjack the thread.
  12. rpfc i agree with you. there is nothing wrong with most of cales game. he gets piles of the ball. his disposal is average (but could be great). he runs everywhere. but my main question is, if he got an extended run at the level below (remembering that he basically stepped from under 18s to AFL) would he learn to dominate the game in a different way. At the moment is he just doing enough, and getting away with somethings that are below par, because he is young, and does this create bad habbits? if he got into the habbit of being BOG and kicking laser kicks to the spot would that translate to afl level?
  13. Good post, and great thread. Maybe one of the best around here for a while. In reply, you seemed to indicate that the question was whether he should be playing senior footy or not due to a lack of confidence, but then stated that the question was whether he would put on weight. I would think that those two questions are unrelated. Many slight players over the years have had unquestionable courage. Ricky Petterd is a prime example and currently on our list. I think the question should be, will he gain this courage and decisiveness by playing 5-10 games at casey where his build is less of an issue, and where the intensity is a bit lower, allowing him to get his disposal right? And, will it then be transferrable to AFL level when he is promoted? Also DangerousDemon, any chance you would join the discussion in the Newton thread. Would love to hear your thoughts in there, without highjacking this one.
  14. bate played one of the worst games i have ever seen him play. even worse when you consider his direct opponent for a lot of the match was goodwin. juice kicked 3 behinds to millers 2. they had the same number of possessions. he had 4 tackles to millers 1. 3 contested possessions gets to millers 1. miller is listed as 3 clangers to juices none (although personally id count two of the behinds as clangers). 1%s newton got 2, miller got 1. i'm not sure how you can talk up millers game at the expense of newton. ok so he has kicked 2.7 in two games. thats 9 shots at goal. thats 9.5% of all our shots at goal in 5 matches, and 22% of all shots at goal in the games he has played. in 5 games: bate has kicked 5.3 (8 shots) davey has kicked 2.0 (2 shots) PJ has kicked 2.1 (3 shots) miller has kicked 6.9 (15 shots) petterd has kicked 5.3 (8 shots) in 4 games green has kicked 9.1 (10 shots) in 3 games: dunn 4.0 (4 shots) He has been inaccurate, but at least he is getting shots. I understand what you are saying about the taking time. And if he had the belief that he could kick the goal that is exactly what I would expect him to do. But I think that he could have taken 5 minutes and he would have stuffed the shot because of where his head is. Give the kid a chance to get his confidence up and he just may come good. Not as your number 1 or 2 forward but as your third option, as your depth tall, or as trade bait he could have potential.
  15. The MFC should be calling up the AFL today and saying 'Yesterdays crowd is an eample of why we want you to stop stuffing us around in the fixturing game". We have 30,000 members, we have been getting decent crowds, but Sunday at 440? Please stop using us as your guinea pig, OR put a financial guarentee on it for us. We'll play odd timeslots if you are prepared to put up the money to cover our loss of gate receipts." the timeslot s a disastor. Apart from the fact it probably follows on from another game comfortably for TV, it is such an odd time that you cant do anything with your Sunday, it makes the evening meal at an awkward time, or forces you to bu stuff at the game. Also, I cant imagine who, apart from MFC and crows supporters, would sit at ome and watch foxtel at 440-7 on a Sunday night? Saturday arvos, night games sure no worries, people will sit and watch them. But sunday twilight?
  16. nah i don't think its got anything to do with you not playing football, but i really think the reason he didnt try kicking straight was because his confidence in his kicking was so low he genuinely felt he had no chance kiking it with a drop punt. the absolute last thing i would want him to do is go back and take his time etc. all that means is he keeps thinking about how important it is and how bad he has been kicking. mist midfielders can't kick for goal from a set shot, but can on the run. In a set shot you are thinking about what is going to much, every movement in your body is magnified by the concentration and the slow action you are moving in. I am not saying it was a good decision, but I can understand where he was coming from. Have you ever played pool? do you find it a lot easier to get balls in when they are on a slight angle or when they are dead straight? Doesn't make much sense but lots of people struggle with those straight ones. But then, they are elite athletes either. I just want everyone to remember that if he had of kicked straighter today (2 goals), and straighter last week (say 4.2) everyone would be sining his praises. If his output is 1-2 goals and a GA or two each game I think everyone around the club would be stoked because he would be a key member of the team. Given that, for all his failures and flaws, he is only some goal kicking confidence away from performing well above everyone around heres expectations I think he is worth persisting with.
  17. so shoot the kid because he cant kick straight. we kicked 4.10, he wasnt the only culprit. miller kicks more points than goals most weeks, if he has any shots at goal. our general skills around the ground are shocking, so its not a surprise that we suck in front of goal also. not saying there are any excuses for missing two shots at goal, but not worth dropping him for, he was obviously angry at himself also. jaded, the attempted checkside was a clear lack of confidence shot. he didnt have the confidence to kick it straight. has not been kicking the drop punt well for the last couple of weeks so thought he had a better chance with another shot. im not saying he is a superstar. im not saying he will make it. but lets not crucify young players every time they make mistakes.
  18. wel if you didnt need it pointed out why did you bother writing it? one of the biggest wastes of a post i have ever seen. you may have well written that meese looks really tall when standing next to jones and mclean in the midfield, or that its amazing how red bates hair is when you ompare him to buckley.
  19. probably because the two you named are small running players, while jurrah is a KP or at the very least, tall flanker...
  20. unfortunately it doesn't seem to be the g/fs wives and mothers that are particularly interested in pia. but good plug anyway!
  21. Call the MCC, hopefully they can direct you to right department. If not, ask to speak to the events department. Hope you can remember the security guards numbers.
  22. If you really have any Grgic Highlights it is your duty to you tube them. watching him kick directly to opposition players is a past time that all generations should be able to enjoy. It makes you appreciate what we have now!
  23. dogs could be a force with him up forward. otherwise he would be the perfect marquee signing for GC17, captain for 3 years, promote the game etc while they put 3 years into a developing young forward to take his spot.
  24. He was taken as a project player, always known that he had talent, but whether he could put it all together at afl level was questionable. He made his debut just over two seasons ago (round 3, 2007), and has played 17 of 46 games since then. He spent 3 months on the sidelines with a knee injury last year. In his first season at the club (2006) we had neitz and robbo and miller player as KP forwards, and bate was getting games also. Not a lot of spots left for a young KPP. F/S selections should never be compared to anyone. However Cloke has turned out so far to be a reasonable forward who cant kick reliably. He was always considered the best of the cloke brothers, and from a young age was touted as AFL standard. Cloke has played 78 games and kicked 95 goals after debuting in 2005. Even though he is a similar age to Newton he has played a lot more senior footy and has longer to adapt. Newton Hooked On Winning Feeling
