The AFL injury update after round one

Melbourne

Matthew Bate – hamstring – 1 week

Jack Grimes – groin - 3-5 weeks

When was the last time we had only two players out through injury?

good to hear, but how are we looking at weels, barts and rivers? are they almost ripe enough to play against the doggies?

How ironic we have the healthiest list in years yet have just taken the biggest belting in years

Cherry Ripe I would have thought. Reading Beach Road Bazza's brief match report on the Sandy games this weekend, it sounds as though all the Melbourne blokes had good games for the Zebs. Admittedly easy to do when your mob wins by 117 points, but they have been going well for a few weeks now, so they must be ready to return to the front line. Rivers and Bartram in particular will be great inclusions.

Every time I hear about Grimes and his injury it's something different, so far I've heard that he has back fractures, shin problems and now a groin complaint :(

So Bate wont be right for another week?

If Rivers plays for Sandy this week, it just shows me that Bailey has no interest in winning this week. How can we possibly win a game with our current defence.

Rivers, Bartram and Dunn must play this week, while Whelan should get a gig for rd 3 V Geelong.

He said he is not bringing blokes back early and having them re-injure themselves. I agree with him wholeheartedly.

It's True, Grimes, has a stress groinshinback fracture. Might never walk again. rare but serious

see thats what i dont understand.

Playing at sandy they can re-injure themselves, why not play them for the dees where they are meant to play and needed desperately

They can be eased back at Sandy. Firstly the intensity is lower, and secondly they can be made to only play a half (particularly if they play in the reserves) in a bid to increase their fitness. If they've been out for X months, they're going to get slaughtered if they're brought straight back in to the team, and how their body would hold up is generally an unknown when they have been out for a long time. You don't know how much game time they're capable of, and at AFL level you need them to be capable of at least 70% if needs be. No coach is going to take that risk.

If any of Bartram, Rivers and Whelan aren't selected this week, it will not be due to fitness. They seem to have demonstrated they're capable of running out a game at Sandy.

oh ok thanks Nasher.

basically if you are not sure how the bodies will respond, you cannot risk them at afl level. sandy is important yes, but if rivers came off the ground and said 'hey im a little tight through here not sure if i should keep going' if he was at sandy he could sit the rest of the day out. at afl level however he would probably be required to continue playing somewhat.

Not if we were down by 104 points!

Ones missing.

Spot on Franky. Injury lists lack integrity and accuracy.

You'd have to say a couple of weeks away unless Bailey is willing to throw them in underdone like he did Bruce

  • AFLW REPORT: West Coast

Melbourne’s response to last week’s heartbreak was emphatic, as the Demons delivered a statement win over West Coast at a windswept Casey Fields. All of the pre-match hype surrounded the coach’s box matchup of Mick Stinear up against his apprentice, Daisy Pearce along with the gloomy weather forecast. In the end, it was less about tactical chess and more about Melbourne’s relentless execution. With rain looming, the DeeArmy and early birds snapped up the best undercover viewing spots.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: West Coast

Epic battle alert.  This Sunday, Casey Fields hosts a coach’s showdown pitting the wits of the master Mick Stinear (92 games, 71.7% win rate) against his protégé Daisy Pearce (16 games, 43.8%). Still early in her coaching journey, Daisy’s record doesn’t yet reflect her impact — but she’s already the best-performed coach at West Coast.Dais’ is mythic.  Like Katniss Everdeen, everyone either wants to kiss her, kill her (sporting metaphor) or be her.  Toothers Daisy Pearce is a role model, someone admired for their heart, humility and humour.

  • AFLW REPORT: Port Adelaide

Well, that was a shock. The Demons 4-game unbeaten run came to a grinding halt in a tense, scrappy affair at the sunny, windy Alberton Oval, with the Power holding on for a 2-point win. The Dees had their chances—plenty of them—but couldn't convert when it mattered most. Port’s tackling pressure rattled the Dees, triggering a fumble frenzy and surprising lack of composure from seasoned players.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Port Adelaide

The undefeated Demons venture across the continent to the spiritual home of the Port Adelaide Football Club on Saturday afternoon for the inaugural match for premiership points between these long-historied clubs. Alberton Oval will however, be a ground familiar to our players following a practice match there last year. We lost both the game and Liv Purcell, who missed 7 home and away matches after suffering facial fractures in the dying moments of the game.

  • AFLW REPORT: Richmond

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmy’s inclusive banner—"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwood’s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.
