Untouchables

Just thought an exclusive thread would be interesting.

IMO, the only untouchable right now is the Jones boy.

Some would say Brock, but I just don't know if anyone on the list has the kind of must-keep-quality that #2 has got.

so who else??????

Brent Girgic??(I do know he hasn't been on the list for years, just felt like a laugh)

We need to keep an appropriate mix of old and new together. Frawley for Saints 9 pick and pick 4 and 9 for Judd sounds ok.

Robbo to Bullies and Meeson ( if his behaviour stacks up) from Crows plus someting to US sounds ok - our future rucks are a problem post White.

That gives our midfield a massive boost.

We still have heps of options up forward - Neitz, Newton (developing), Bate ,Dunn, Green (leading FP), Miller.

Our backs will be boosted by the return of Rivers, Wheelan and Bartram.

So if we can get Judd on those terms and Meesen (if he stacks up) then i think we will be good going forward. If Meesen does not stack up then go for the Lions Woods.

Meeson is also listed as a 200cm forward option.

Nathan Jones

Jared Rivers

The next list would be players who I would find difficult to let go, but at the price of Judd just may have to.

Aaron Davey

Michael Newton

Brock McLean

Ricky Petterd

Daniel Bell

Clint Bartram

Matthew Bate

Lynden Dunn

The rest can line up and West Coast can pluck whoever they wish.

I love Jones, absolutely love him, but why does everyone seem to have him ahead of McLean? He's obviously had a better year, but he also hasnt had a serious injury or copped the same attention from taggers that McLean has.

They're obviously similair players and pretty evenly matched, although I think McLean's got slightly better disposal (not that theres much in it, admittedly). Id have both of them in the top five players I'd most hate to see traded (along with Rivers, Newton and Bate) and would struggle to seperate them, so its not like I strongly disagree with anyone putting Jones ahead of Brock, Im just a bit surprised that so many people seem to.

Whilst Jonesy's kicking still needs work, he has significantly more pace than Chook. I think thats what, for me, suggests he has more potential.

Everyone can be traded, especially for Judd. Even Rivers.

I'm just wary about us giving up TOO much for Judd, that 'veal Berlo' deal would not sit right with me at all.

Any one player can go for Judd, I could care less which one, it's the next bit that I want us to be conservative but fair with.

Nathan Jones IMO is more of a clearance machine than Brock McLean. His pace off a standing start is unbelievable. He is also the gutsiest player in this squad, hungriest for the ball and fearless.

Jones quick? He's a slow as a wet week - that's why he went at number 12 in the draft. If it was on skills alone he would've been top 5. Remeber that chook has been ravaged by injury this year, cast your mind back 12 months then compare the two. McLean is the better player, no question.

For the record the untouchables are:

Rivers

McLean

Davey

The reluctants are:

Jones

Newton

Bate

Bell

Green (2008 captain)

Trapper

Everyone else I'd give up in a heart beat.

Would people stop putting Davey up as a potential trade, especially for an UNPROVEN RUCK as sylvianator put up in another thread. He, along with Bell, are the only players with line breaking ability in our team. Look at Scarlett, Chapman, S Johnson and Wojinski's games today (and for the rest of the season for that matter) to see how bloody important line breakers are. Sure we look likely to get Judd, but we need more of them. We MUST NOT simply take one out and replace with another (no matter how good they are).

The James Frawley to St. Kilda for Pick 9 trade looks realistic.

Pick 4 and 9 to West Coast should be all that is required.

Robertson and Miller to Bulldogs for Pick 22 and [insert quick midfielder here] and CAC will do wonders with 21 and 22.

i disagree regarding frawly to saints. WC rated frawley very very highly last year. why bother with frawley to the saints, when WC will prob be happy taking frawley as part of the trade?

as for untouchable? if WC said straight swap, rivers for judd i would take it. rivers plus anything good is too much. (i might consider rivers and 21, it will leave our midfield intact, and we can draft rance pick 4)...

Frawley has to agree since he's in his 1st year. He wouldn't agree to go to West Coast if the Saints are an option, for obvious reasons. That deal makes a lot of sense and is keeping me a bit sane.

I agree with that. Frawley's more likely to agree to it if it's the Saints. Not only is it still in Melbourne so he doesn't have to move away from his friends, family and life, but there's the family connection.

The only reason why I wouldn't trade Rivers, not even for Judd, is because finding tall defenders with such a great ability to read the play, is harder than finding very very good midfielders.

Judd may be more than a very very good midfielder, but our backline is not exactly thriving. Take Rivers out and you're left with the crud we had going this year. We must keep Rivers. He and McLean are my only untouchables, with Jones and Bate close by.

Yeh, I'm almost convinced on adding Rivers to the untouchables list.

Thrice watch the way Jones moves at stoppages, the guys the best reader of the ball I've seen in about 15 years of watching the MFC. Consistently NJ is a step above everyone else and sticks other players in perfect position with a clever disposal....check out some Greg Williams highlights - that's #2. Brock is great (especially his ability to turn on against the filth) but Jones tops the untouchables list even after 2 years in the game.

Is it just me or does anyone else find it strange that while CBruce isn't talked about in any 'untouchables' discussion he's never talked about as a possible player to offload (is this coz of the contract??).

Anyway, I reckon the guy is the best DT player that's closest to being dropped. Terrible downhill career since Brent Guerra picked him up and piledrived his shoulder.

bate? really? why is he close to your untouchables? as much as i like him, i would loose him before newton, and perhaps frawley (key defender is much more valuable imo).

Untouchables:

miller

 funniest thing Ive read in a long whiles !! thanks

I would say Rivers is my only untouchable, as a quality tall defender, we can't afford to see him go. I could handle others being traded for Judd, but if the likes of McLean was to go, I would be unwilling to part with #4. I think Frawley to Saints for #9, and then #4, #9 and possibly #21 is most likely scenario.

Thwe only untouchable is David Neitz, because he is the MFC

The closest we have to untouchable is Jared Rivers

However, what if this trade came along..

West Coast send Chris Judd and Adam Hunter to Melbourne

Demons send pick 4, 9 and Jared Rivers to West Coast

You are going to take that every time!!

Thats a tough one. Hunter is very good at both ends, and less injury prone than Rivers. However what are we losing to snare pick 9?

Well, I guess Petterd or Frawley

Take your pick

Yer. I don't know if I want to lose 2 young defenders, when our backline is rather mediocre.

Jared Rivers

Brock McLean

Colin Sylvia (I know many of you might disagree, but this kid can be something special and I think it would be great to see him under a new coach)

Aaron Davey

Nathan Jones

All 5 of those guys can win a game for us (yes, even Rivers). I can't really think of anyone else on the team who can.

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
