Every now and then I have a thought that there will one day be a Melbourne squad that doesn’t have Max Gawn in it and it makes me legitimately emotional. I can’t and don’t want to imagine it. Wonder if this is how the fans of the 80s felt about Robbie.

The answer would be yes.

A sneaky Brownlow at 34 for a ruckman is absolutely not out of the question on current trajectory. No wouldn’t that be bloody something?

I hope he plays till he is 38 but he has got to get out of his own way. Either miss every 6th game or play forward (or behind the footy) for 30 minutes a game.

I worry it will be over in a blink of an eye or a rupture of an ACL, and that’s when the grief really gets you - when it’s so sudd

Fantastic win, I admit I didn't tip us.

The team is running with confidence and it shows. Relentless and fast footy which is great to watch.

The amazing thing was our midfield dominance considering how young we are in there. Across the ground we unsettled the opposite and did you notice how much they were arguing with each other every time we beat them. Not a team yet on today's performance.

Also better first quarter, though still not leading yet at 1/4 time.

Agree midfield dominance is off the charts … and we don’t have the big 3 from our flag, JV, CP, CO and, frankly, looking better without the last 2 year versions of them.

As long as you have 100 true fans, you won’t ever achieve anything. Gold Coast is this. They lack soul, they lack an identity and they lack anyone giving a [censored] about them. They are essentially pay to win like free to play mobile games.

Handouts by the AFL allowed them Hardwick, Judas, Anderson, Rowell, MaC Andrew…. God, I hope they get picked apart, even if it strengthens Geelong or Collingwood. We may even get a chance to land Mac Andrew in a couple years time as Lever winds down to an end.

Mmmmm …. do we really want him now? I realised that we are a bit thin on KPDs, given Adams is yet to convince, but MacA can be pretty shaky. Work on Disco and Petty, and maybe if Kentfield goes well as a KPF / relief ruck, JVR could turn defender.

I'm thinking this to myself after every MFC game lately. Reminding myself to make the most of it and never take it for granted.

He deserves every accolade he gets.

The bookies more often than not get it right

We're paying currently $1.57 to make the '10' (that's 4-6 in the old language) Odds-on!!

(By the way, before the start of the season, we were paying $3.75 to make the '10')

But in order to make the finals we're going to have to turn half-way with a decent W/L record. Our run home isn't easy

So we need to win now and build up a bank of wins

But I've seen enough to not bother with the September snow season

Get confident, folks. We're going places

I got $5 on tab to make the ten.

I wonder what the double of Norf and Deez for the 10 paying?

You missed the posts about finals because they don’t exist.

This turned out to not to be a true statement but fair play.

I was going to start this comment with tongue firmly in cheek and say ‘No Trac, No Suns.’ However that might be construed as denigrating an excellent MFC team performance in a very, very good, high class game of footy against one of the flag fancies.

Afterall, they had the luxury of being able to replace Trac with another bull in the reigning Brownlow medalist. Not a bad position to be in.

I am sure that 99% of footy fans thought that the stacked suns midfield would cast aside the Demons mids and dominate. However, the team pressure game that the Dee brought to the ‘G’ on Sunday easily accounted for the much lauded Suns.

It started at the center ball ups with a Max masterclass that presented the guys at his feet with silver service… the ball on a platter. We also only used 4 players to attend the CBs all game I believe. Steele (fantastic game), Sparrow (excellent follow up game from last week), Pickett (the human highlight reel), and Windsor (the intern). When these guys were not running it out of the middle, they were pressuring and tackling the Suns to a standstill.

The midfield were not the only ones dishing out the pressure. The backs and forward stepped up and equalled the mids manic performance.

Who knew that the team could produce a performance like that in just their fourth serious putting under King?

Last week was good, this week was better.

A few observations:

·        Sharp and Tholstrup look to be thriving under King. I had doubts about both however, I love being proved wrong in cases like this. I really hope they go on with it.

·        Our defence held up very well working cleanly behind a very supportive midfield. Kept the suns to taking scoring shots from long range.

·        With some smart delivery, our forward are thriving. Well structured and always on the move looking for opportunities. When the ball spilt they brough the pressure.

·        Melksham was wonderful. 4 goals, onfield coaching and just so very, very, smart.

·        A good coaching performance from King and his team. Had the team spot on for the game and pulled the right levers during the game. Petty to relief ruck allowing him to rover around the game was a good move.

·        There is a hell of a lot of observations I could add to this list but one last one. That was the best I have seen us play a team game in 3 or 4 seasons. Good to see but they have set a high performance standard that will be very difficult to maintain. There will be a number on here that will jump on them as soon as there is a dip in that level. For me, three wins from 4 with one of those wins over Carlton and the second on Sunday are enough to sustain me when we have the losses we are going to have.

Selection is going to be difficult. Fristch, Bowey and Viney you would expect to be walk up starts but do you tamper with a team performing like that? Add to that the Casey boys that are performing and it means that we have a lot of depth to play with.

I imagine that there are a lot of opposition coaching teams carefully dissecting that game to work out what we did to dominate the Suns so well and to try to put together  a strategy to defeat our game plan.

Here's an interesting exercise, post our win on Sunday

How many teams will struggle to get to 12 wins? (given that 12 wins should snag at least 10th spot)

So here are the teams I came up with that I couldn't guarantee would win 12 games

  • Tigers

  • Port

  • Pies

  • North

  • Bombers

  • Blues

  • Giants

  • Eagles

  • Crows

  • Saints

  • Demons

Hawks, Cats, Doggies, Lions, Swans, Suns & Freo should all win 12+ games

That leaves 3 spots up for grabs for the final 10

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
