2009 draft

Featured Replies

Hi guys just looking at the 2009 draft.

I’m not going to mention who went at #1 but it was the draft max was drafted in. But so was Dustin Martin and Nathan Fyfe. Which begs the question who is the best player to come out of the 2009 draft. Discuss

If we can't split them, let's think of them as a fantasy greatest-ever State of Origin CB pairing?

Dusty

Max

Fyfe

Gunston

Fitzpatrick

Funny old draft. So many injury cursed high picks

According to my MFC 150th Anniversary History: "Triple treat - According to reports from the time, Percy Beames was best-on-ground in all three Grand Finals from 1939-41 - a feat that would win him three Norm Smith Medals in the modern era."

I'll leave your 'is' for Max but downgrade your Dusty 'probably' to 'possibly'. ☺️

I think you should go to emergency, if you’re bleeding red and blue.

That ain’t right.

Martin and Gawn have dealt with such different circumstances in their respective careers that it becomes a bit misty to compare them as players.

Martin was in a 15-win team three seasons after being drafted, the year Gawn was in a 2-win team. Doesn't make Martin less of a player, but does have to shape any comparison.

It is unlikely Gawn would ever win a Norm Smith medal, but just imagine the reverence for him now if Melbourne had kicked straight in finals. Sigh. The 2028 Premiership will heal all wounds.

As for Fyfe... peak Fyfe... leading clearance player for the competition even when Ablett Jr was running around, also contributing a goal a game and setting up another directly, taking a contested mark or two every week, something like 2/3rds of his disposals were contested, and spent as much time on the ground as you'd expect from a tall defender, not a midfield/wing/half-forward/forward.

His injury run was a blow to football. I suspect Freo killed their golden goose because they were so desperate to hit a premiership 'now' that they squeezed everything they could out of him at every moment. Too many minutes on the ground, too many quick returns from injuries.

Kinda funny how in the early 2010's the broad consensus was we botched that draft (and we mostly did) but somehow still managed to come out of it with the greatest ruckman of the modern era.

Gawn has been better for longer than Fyfe was.

  1. Martin

  3. Fyfe

  4. Gunston

The 2009 draft is relatively underwhelming, especially at the top end.

Apart from Gawn, our drafting 07-12 doesn’t make for good reading. We have BP to thank for that.

Imagine what JT could’ve got us.

All I care about in relation to this draft is finding the members pack card from that year where it had all the 2009 draftees. I had this on my fridge for at least 5 years then lost it.

I had Scully crossed and and some expletives written next to him. The photo of Gawn was the greenest one I've seen of him.

Four absolute Champions have emerged from the pack, Gawn, Martin, Gunston and Fyfe. Max will always be my No.1 but the other three are all highly respected and probably club favourites.

He's certainly been better for longer.

Obviously, that wasn't my ranking criteria.
