This highlights why coaches' votes don't mean much.

The split looks like JVR 5 & 4, Hall 5 & 3, Max 4 & 3, suggesting that one coach thought Max Hall was BOG. One coach gave an excited, fresh approach; the other was the usual monotonous drivel, suggesting a loss because they dropped some marks. We are so lucky that King was selected as our coach, he is a ripper

Can we safely assume Ross Lyon is the dumbazz who gave Hall 5 votes and Wilkie 2? I'm surprised he didn't find room for Nas as well given his post match comments.

To be fair, Hall had an amazing game.

You could easily make the case he was BOG - in fact I reckon he was.

They certainly count more than those blind muppets in white

I reckon that they got the votes from our game very wrong. Gawn should have got 10, Hall 8, JVR 6, and although Steele was very good, I would have had Sharp ahead of him, due to the fact that he pretty much won us the game with his last quarter effort.

I agree Hall was indeed very good for them.

26 touches, 4 goals and 6 clearances is a pretty good day at the office.

While Max was enormous in the last, It was out of JVR and Hall for who was BOG for the entire game. But Max was definitely the one who swung it our way in the 4th.

I think the ruck GOAT just cares about getting the win instead of BOG.

I agree Binman, Hall was damn impressive.

I would just give Max the edge performing where it mattered to turn the game but Hall was excellent.

I respectfully disagree.

The Champion Data player ratings are, in my humble, by far the best, most accurate such rating system.

In the Saints Dees game the top 7 rated players were (note 20 ratings points is considered an elite AA level performance):

  1. Max Hall - 28 points

  2. JVR - 25 points

  3. Jack Sinclair - 20.2 points

  4. Jack Steele - 19.7 points

  5. NAS - 16.4 points

  6. Sam Flanders - 15.8 points

  7. Maxy - 15.7 points

This is the coaches votes:

  • 9 Jacob van Rooyen

  • 8 Max Hall

  • 7 Max Gawn

  • 2 Callum Wilkie

  • 2 Jack Sinclair

  • 1 Jack Steele

  • 1 Caleb Windsor

Five of the top CD rated players got coaches votes, with the same top two (albeit in different order).

The coaches obviously put more stock on intangibles like huge last quarter performances or kicking clutch goals (goals are big point scorers, hence JVRs rating's but there is no differentiation about when, and in what circumstances those golas are scored) that have an outsize influence on the result.

Which is why Maxy got 7 coaches vote - he was massive factor in us winning that game with his huge last quarter. Windsor, who had 12.3 player rating points, was super influential in the first half so i can sort understand him getting one coaches vote.

That said i would have given Sharp votes. He was our fourth highest rayed player for the game (13.9 points) and had an incredible last quarter - 11.2 rating points for a quarter of footy is unbelievable (a goal, goal assist and score involvements were a big factor in that rating).

By way of contrast, Maxy, who was also massive in the last quarter, and super influential on the result, had 6.5 rating points in the last q.

Sharp was a big reason we won that game and deserved coaches votes IMHO - well done young fella.

No problem, it’d be pretty boring if we all agreed on everything. I rated mine based on the fact that Gawn played all but 12 minutes of game time and in the wash up was the most influential in our winning the game.

I then ranked Hall because aside from scoring a clutch of goals, he had a big influence around the ground and kept the Saints in the game with his individual contribution.

JVR’ contribution speaks for itself.

I rated Sharp ahead of Steele, purely because his contribution in the last quarter was what got us across the line.

Stats and rankings are all well and good.. I just base mine on what I see 🤣

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
