The New Rules?

Featured Replies

What are supporters feelings about the new rules?

One that has irked me is the implemention of the stand rule when the man on the mark is often called to stand when he is nowhere near the mark (and when the player with the ball can start from almost anywhere).

I'm pleased to see that Luke Beveridge complained about that last night where he said it gave Brisbane an advantage leading to a goal. (He could afford to complain having won the game.)

Re the lasso rule - I wonder if its introduction should make the 'insufficient intent' rule redundant. That would give the umpires one less mind-reading task to do and allow for mis-kicks. Currently I feel they often interpret mis-kicks as insufficient intent rather than insufficient skill and ignore pressure on the kicker.

(I note there is no insuffcient intent for shepherding a ball going out between the arcs.)

A number of times in the Geelong game i saw 2 players man the mark. Obviously you're not allowed to back away now and the stand call came and they were unsure as to which was on the mark so both stayed. Ridiculous.

Last possession out of bounds is a winner. I would go further and have last touch out of bounds and have it for the whole ground to get rid of insufficient intent completely and reduce congestion.

Couldn’t agree with you less.

All but one game it has been less skill displayed just to see the ball stay inside the boundary. I think it’s made gameplay very poor.

The good thing about the throw in is that it gave time for set up and gave the smallest breather.

It’s too much go go go and I find it hard to watch.

The stand rule isn’t new, though overzealous policing does seem to be.

IMO it is absolutely counterintuitive, and surely a 50 meter penalty is way way over the top.

It appears that some players being told to stand genuinely don’t know exactly where to stand, and if they slightly shuffle to adjust - bang, 50.

If they do stand as ordered, the umpires all too often call play on well after the kicker has taken off.

It’s an under 12’s rule and has no place in the game.

Agree, a big disadvantage especially with the speed of the game and the lack of calling the player with the ball to start from an appropriate spot.

I've always wondered what would be the result if umpires did not have to call play on but instead left the decision to the player on the mark. Penalise if they got it wrong, do nothing if they got it right.

the stand rule has gone from making it 18 vs 17 to 18 vs 16 cos any time two players hear 'stand' they freeze on the spot for fear of giving away a 50 - as the season goes on it'll be relaxed, guaranteed right up to the point where it costs a 50, a goal, and a win in the dying seconds of a game later in the season that decides whether we make the play-in tournament or not; my mfcss is a-tingling at the possibilities!

last touch between the arcs was effectively what they were doing for the last couple of years anyway; now it's just removed the grey

the centre line in the centre circle for rucks is proving interesting already; a couple of times last night tdk delayed his jump and cameron went up with knee out to brace for impact, and got penalised as such - certain he'll try the same vs gawn this week

I think the stand rule is theoretically easier to understand from the outside. Yet to see it enough to ensure they don’t over complicate it.

I also don’t mind the idea that it gives you a clear advantage. If you have the ball and skilfully kick to a teammate who has the skill to mark then that needs to be its own in game advantage of sorts. Too often over the last decade taking a mark only gave opposition teams time to set up their zone. Now the advantage flips to the side with the ball, particularly if they are willing to handball forward of the mark and take that space (therefore reducing the value of a defensive zone again). Windsor ran into this space a lot in our Practice game, and it made us much more dynamic looking. This is what the league want. Running forward, skilled kicking, less emphasis on defensive zones.

The thing making the game horrible is the horrible music after each goal.

That for me is my biggest hate in the modern game.

Touché

Disgusting Americanisation of OUR 🇦🇺game.

It certainly will put me off ever considering going to a “neutral” game, which I used to do quite a bit at the G.

The incessant and more particularly inane racket before the game and at breaks has already put me off.

The only rule i hate is the stand rule the ruck rule and the free kick between the arcs is ok.

Sadly it looks like we are going to be doing this as well after goals now. VOTE NOW | Demons’ first goal song

Another assault to the ears at the game with the incessant yelling on the big screen at each break.

And the NRL influence of having players "banned". They are suspended.

Players that played in "de fense" have now returned to defence.
