AFLW: PF vs North Melbourne

Timing is everything.

This year the WSL match of the day is played at about noon and televised on Sky. In previous years it was a mix of free to air on BBC and Sky (pay) with the match of the day played in the evening.

Last weekend's Chelsea v Arsenal attracted an audience of 71k compared to 732k watching the same game last year. Admittedly last year's game was in the men's International window and FTA on the BBC.

So frustrating watching this GF. Brisbane are pathetic & we put up a much better fight against nth.

We let an opportunity slip

So true. But we didn't win that first final...so we meet North a week early.

No we didn’t. We gave 110% and came up just short against north.

Did North throw it 100 times without being pinged like every other week? Or hold players in every contest with the same result?

I loved the girls effort but the reality against NM was we scored 10 points after quarter time. Brisbane scored 8 points to half time. NM’s defence was outstanding aided by a fantastic midfield of Garner, Riddell and Sheeran.

Congrats to NM, easily the best team over the season and deserved to win.

They were the best all season. But they beat us by 10 points. That's a cause of optimism for me and North are going to get beaten some time. It's up to us to do it.

PS. Two of their biggest drivers, Kearney and Shierlaw, are both 36.

The only way we will beat North is to significantly improve the list over the offseason. We simply can't match their level of talent across the ground.

Unfortunately the AFL have created a monster that is going nowhere in the next 2-3 years. You only need to look at their ability to recruit Sheerin for minimal outlay last year.

The pay structure in the AFLW means that you can't just go out and pillage their list without seriously compromising your own list. You are really only competing for talent on the quality of your program and facilities, and the opportunity to play finals, and North obviously rate very highly on those measures.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
