AFLW: Rd 09 vs Fremantle

Perhaps they could change the song from the cringeworthy prayer to the star spangled banner.

Banshees... ,maybe

Jas Garner now one goal ahead of Kate in the race to the ton, 96 to 95. Big game tomorrow hopefully!

❤️💙 GAMEDAY! ❤️💙

We’re TEMPORARILY third on the ladder with a healthy percentage. Hawthorn needn’t get too comfy, they’re just keeping the second rung warm for us 😝

A win is never a given, but we should come home with the 4pts. Would LOVE to beat Freo on their home turf.

The mighty Dees by Dingo (18 pts)

This will be a finals game for Freo. If Freo win, they'll sit just one game out of the 8. With just 4 games to finish the regular season, every game is precious for the Dockers.

So the Dockers will have advantages with 'must win' mindset, home turf and likely favourable umps (last year the Dockers beat us thanks to a free kick in front of goal just before the siren sounded).

If we are a team of destiny, we will have the maturity and strength to cast all those Freo advantages aside and take the 4 points. Rosario Dawson Muscles GIF by Luke Cage

Does anyone else wish the AFLW Dees had a distinctive name?

If we refer to the 'Dees', is it the men's or women's team? It's cumbersome.

I read an inspiring article about Matilda Kyra Cooney-Cross. It had me thinking each of the national sporting teams has a distinctive name so we immediately know the sporting code and gender.

I asked my buddy Claude.io for some suggestions, following:

  • Banshees - - These supernatural female spirits are known for their powerful presence and haunting calls. It keeps the supernatural theme and has great potential for chants and supporter culture

  • Furies - Drawing from Greek mythology, the Furies were fierce female spirits of vengeance. It maintains the mythological/demonic theme while being distinctly feminine and intimidating

  • Valkyries - Norse mythology's choosers of the slain - fierce female warriors. Maintains mythological roots while being unmistakably strong and independent

  • Demonesses - A direct, powerful feminine form that maintains the club's demon heritage while asserting their own identity

  • Pioneers - Direct and powerful, celebrating their groundbreaking role in both competitions

  • Trailblazers - Dynamic and forward-looking, emphasizing they're carving the path for others to follow

  • Amazons - Perhaps the strongest option. Wonder Woman's warrior race represents strength, skill, and sisterhood. The term has mythological roots but strong superhero associations, and "Amazon" is synonymous with fierce female warriors

Thoughts?

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

The dominant storyline coming out of Round One for Saturday Night’s clash at Optus Stadium centres on the influence of the big men. The spotlight naturally falls on two elite ruckmen who, five years ago, shared the stage in Melbourne’s memorable premiership triumph.

  • THE STATS FILES: St. Kilda

As part of the effort to trim the runtime of the regular podcast, we’ve been looking at which segments could be reshaped without losing what makes them valuable. One segment that naturally came into focus was Binman’s Stats Files. Not because it isn’t important; quite the opposite. It’s become such a substantial and much-loved part of the show that it deserves a little room to breathe.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.

Never in doubt!!! In Steven King’s first game at the helm of the Melbourne Football Club, the Dees outlasted Saints in a wild, momentum-swinging thriller at the MCG, running out 13-point winners.
