But.

I think the difference in thought from posters like Gonzo, others and myself and you and the pro Goody camp probably come down to gamestyle.

And whilst I agree he made significant change to our ball movement (which all coaches have to do at some stage given the evolution of the game), would it be fair to say that in areas like selection, positional change, gameday tactical moves, he did not change much?

This is fair IMV.

I think one of the biggest pieces of evidence that Goodwin didn't change in some of those areas I mentioned is our forward 50 entry. Now genuine change to that particular metric would have needed to come from more than just a change from ball movement from our backhalf. It would have required positional and personnel changes across the midfield and half-forward. And as we know, that never happened.

That's not true though. He put Kozzy through there. They tried Chandler, Langford and Lindsay through there at various stages, but the latter two are better served on the outside until they build their tanks. Langford has looked tired for weeks and Lindsay hit the wall off a reduced first pre season.

He did rely heavily on Oliver, Viney and even Trac this year, which I found disappointing, but to say it never happened is not true.

He did not change in those areas enough. Not nearly aggressive or proactive enough at changing the look of our forward-line or midfield.

This is fair.

Gameday tactical change. Something we also rarely/if ever saw. And his record against tactically sound coaches is evidence of that. Whether it was sticking to his guns when opposition coaches knew to play a plus one behind the ball whilst Goody would keep the plus one around the ball, refusing to run with opposition players who ultimately had far too much influence on the game or dying moments of close games where his positional moves were too late. There's plenty there.

I'm sorry but this is completely wrong. For years we played plus one behind the ball, not at the source...

We haven't played +1 at the source since pre 666 rule change. And this year we often played even numbers...

We were banging our heads against the wall for years with the same issues. And that lies at the feet of Goodwin.

Not enough change occurred, that was clear as day.

This is fair.

I can't recall but was he the one that was a step ahead of everyone when Bucks was coaching Collingwood and they decided to move on Treloar and Stephenson?

Dunno. But they were seen having coffee together hours before he went on AW offloading Clarry.

Would be a smart move for any incoming coach. Start clearing the decks of the cultural issues that have plagued the team for years.

Hang on. I missed this. What happened? Buckley was on 3AW talking about offloading Clarry?

No McClure was. With his -10% hit rate, hence the scepticism.

Thank you for my essay feedback, Sir. Did I pass?

But srsly, I disagree. I'm talking meaningful change. Kosi was always going to run through the middle at some stage for example. I don't count new draftees who come in to play as 'change'. That happens at every club.

There was little meaningful list and positional change. The list needed to change quicker, bigger pieces needed to be moved. And especially so through the midfield and half forward. That didn't happen. I mentioned our forward 50 connection. You didn't mention that? How can that one thing not change over that amount of time? What do you put it down to and why?

And for the tactical talk, we have long brought an extra up to stoppage leaving the opp with an extra in our forward line. That's what I meant. That continued long after 666. Even this year. And again, it took him a long time to change.

I laughed out loud about his article Mentioning trac “ my gut feel is petracca will either stay or go to a club like hawthorn” which is of course about as insightful as “I’m pretty confident Melbourne will hire Nathan Buckley, or someone else as a senior coach for next year”

Ha! But what I mean is I’m pretty sure the AFL rules prevent us from formally interviewing/appointing someone with a club in the finals.

I’m pretty certain Richmond were conducting their interviews during our finals campaign in 2023. Indeed, I think there were comments that Yze was distracted preparing for his interviews and that it negatively affected our planning.

Richmond absolutely ran interviews during our finals campaign in 2023, and yes, there were murmurs that Yze was distracted prepping for them.

Having spent time in this industry, I think it’s important to put some context around what’s actually happening. Clubs are constantly balancing short-term performance with long-term succession planning. When a coach is under pressure, or when an assistant shows genuine potential, interviews in-season—even during finals—are unfortunately part of the landscape. They’re rarely ideal, but they are a known and accepted part of how clubs operate.

Every club will publicly speak about fostering assistants into future head coaches. “We value their talent. We want the best for them. They can go learn elsewhere. Maybe even come back.” It’s a narrative that looks good and, in most cases, reflects genuine intent.

So to tar Adem Yze with the brush of “distraction” feels both unfair and disingenuous. He was doing exactly what the industry expects and what any ambitious assistant would naturally consider.

Yet when a coach is sacked, interviews happen all the time—in-season, in finals—formal, informal. It’s literally how the industry works. Everyone knows it.

And then, lo and behold, in 2025 MELBOURNE does exactly that during a finals campaign, holding interviews, both formal and informal and suddenly it’s a “distraction”? A scandal? A breach of trust?

Classic AFL bubble logic: perfectly fine for me, morally catastrophic for you.

The "before" shot .. 😉

Frank Ponissi was interviewed on SEN today and he hinted that the appointment of the new MFC coach may not happen until late September

Ponissi is the GM of football at the Melbourne Storm and is on the panel formed to find the new coach

For those who don't know, other members of the panel include Brad Green, Steven Smith, Paul Guerra, Alan Richardson, Jobe Watson & Meahan Callaghan

I don't believe that it's a lay down misère that Buckley is a shoe-in

Buckley might be the most likely but there's a process in place which could take a bit of time

Around the 20/21st Im thinking 🤔

Or 28th if a particular club involved...

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
