Interesting thoughts on Buckley

I was against Buckley at first.

But I imagine he’d be coaching for his life and have something to prove.

He’s at a completely different stage now, more authority and a better perspective on the game.

He’s fast becoming my top choice. Though Enright still holds that for me.

If I'm making a decision as to the next coach I couldn't go past the statistics that more Premierships have been won by first-time coaches than re-cycled coaches. That's evidence enough for me to go with a first-time coach. I don't have anyone specific in mind, but the assistant coach who impresses me most through the selection process would be my choice.

I suppose I can now share the following, which I sent as a private message here on April 3 this year:

''I don't often post rumours but I can tell you with certainty that Steven Smith has met for a coffee with Nathan Buckley re potentially coaching the MFC.

I can't tell you how the meeting went or if Buckley has any interest, because I don't know. I only know that they met.

I won't post this on the main forum because it serves no purpose and could potentially cause (further) instability. It's just not needed at the moment.

For me, Smith should conduct this sort of due diligence and I'm glad he's on the front foot. Of course, it may all come to nothing.''

I then heard from a second unrelated source, not long after, that Melbourne was keen on Buckley.

You say you sent it on April 3rd, who did you send it to?

Was that so you could have it verified as accurate?

Just curious, April 3rd was very early season.

First World problems.

They get paid close to a million bucks. Driving down the Monash every morning, I would do that without blinking if I am paid that much.

Yes, it is a first world problem at the top of those type. But you missed my point which was about relativities when choices are available.

Irrespective of the remuneration, if a person has a choice between inner city location or Casey as their workplace, they will be biased to the inner city location, other things equal.

So MFC is disadvantaged by the Casey arrangement in my view.

It also doesn’t help our women’s team who are forced to play there.

You can look at what happened from a win loss perspective around April 3rd and also know that Steven Smith went overseas shortly after.

Connect the dots.

I would be shocked if we decided to sack Goody with 3 rounds left in the season, without making any contact with potential replacements first.

Even we are not that incompetent!

Buckley’s time was also bookended by premierships before and after his rein, and he improved the sides ladder position only once in his 9 seasons at the helm.

Yep, and when he left the team was near the bottom of the ladder. Within 2 years, McCrae had them winning a premiership, with little in the way of list changes.

Goody dropped the bomb, Casey, who would be insane enough to drive there, wherever it is.

That immediately takes out everybody but a few struggling assistant coaches.

A man like Bucks is not going to start his motor up every day and traverse to that place.

It’s a 45 minute drive twice a week. Given it often takes 20 Minutes from just about anywhere to get to AAMI park with Monash in bound/Punt road traffic the Casey factor is about the biggest overreaction I’ve ever seen.

It won’t rule out anyone serious. In fact it might only help us rule out anyone who isn’t committed.

The list (especially contracts) and the admin (board, ceo, head of footy) are both much bigger factors.

Of course, but 3rd April is a long way out. I'm more surprised that we might have been testing the waters that far out.

I'm not.

We did what a good board should do, and discussed the possibility after a 0-5 start off the back of a poor 2024.

We obviously didn't want to jump the gun, and we rightfully gave Goody more time which is totally deserved. Some will argue that he deserved even more time, but for mine the pain would have been the same if we did it now or in 3 weeks time, but now we have 3 extra weeks to land our next coach.

3 weeks is a long time in footy and you need a new coach settled in by the time trade and draft periods roll around.

I assume we’re running a competitive process where senior coach will present their assessment of the list, vision for their tenure, their team, etc…

Is it clear who from the MFC will be conducting interviews and making the BIG decision?

Goodwin was either the man for the job or wasn’t, and the field for the job will be the field. There’s no Hardwick to the Suns level perfect matches here.

I’d be a lot more impressed with Smith if he was canvassing experienced footy people to learn more about how as a President he should run a club. That’s a much smarter thing to do than looking for coach replacements in April.

I am not so sure about that.

The fact we did do it (and I agree it was the right thing), thats the surprising bit.

Wait so you expect a football board who meets regularly to discuss club matters, to NOT discuss our on field performances and coaches after a 0-5 start?

The club wasn't going to sack Goody if they didn't believe they had some really good strong alternatives interested in the job. You don't sack a premiership coach and then go "so, who do we call now guys?".

This is a really big decision and I would be really disappointed if it's one that the club came to on a whim. It needed to be discussed and thought about for a long time, rather than made as a rash reactionary decision to a single performance.

Good on Smith for being proactive and involved. We complain that our board sits on their hands and warms their seat, but then we complain when they don't? You can't win with some fans.

We had only lost our first 3 games by April 3 (although 2 bad losses). Seems early for Smith looking for replacements?

But if we were on par with another club in those areas and it came down to club training ground location and level of facility, nobody is choosing us.

So of course it's a massive factor.

I can't believe there are still supporters that think it's a non-factor.

It's hilarious.

This has to be a joke.

Longmire is still based in Sydney forget about him as an option.

Like other posters have said and I agree he's had everything handed to him on a silver platter up in Sydney and 1 premiership to show for it.

Yes he made 3 other grand finals got smacked by 12 goals in 2 of them and lost to a team who finished 7 on the ladder after 22 rounds.

Buddy gifted wrapped for him, the academy picks, COLA, favourable scheduling, No pressure from the Sydney public, not living in the fish bowl environment etc....

Its a big no from me.

A friend of mine who is a swans supporter and highly connected says Longmire won’t leave S YDNEY.

So how will Hawthorne cope with the move to Dingley?

Canvassing outside opinions about the teams performance is a totally valid thing, that's entirely different to gauging interest in the job.

As long as it's not a West Coast scenario where almost all the good candidates pull out I'd have not interest in whether Buckley declares himself interested in April or not. Aside from anything else there's always a good chance he changes his mind anyway.

We don't need to go back to the messiah complex. Run the best process, hire the best candidate.

The group has indeed been formed. It includes Alan Richardson

I would get rid of Richardson. He is part of the problem.

We have a number of on field and off field issues atm and that screams experienced Coach needed to me.

We need a cool head who has the experience to deal with all of our issues.

We need an astute footy tactician.

We need a confident media performer who is liked by the media.

We need someone who can give this 100% and not be distracted by a young family’s needs.

We need someone who the players will respect and listen to.

The fact one candidate was a Dee’s supporter is irrelevant, but doesn’t hurt with motivation and care.

We need a candidate who will not be scared of making a mistake, losing his job and his only future source of income.

One candidate is the obvious one on my criteria.

Of course with different criteria it could be someone else.

However, I think our Coach, fitting the above criteria, will be announced before the finals.

I think On the Couch on Fox Footy will have a new member in 2026, with that person sitting next to Jono Brown.

Who says we won't do that?

Who says Smith caught up with Buckley but didn't also ring Longmire and Simpson?

I am confident that we've spoken to a number of options before we made the call to remove Goody as our coach.

While I prefer we went for an untried assistant, we unfortunately have too many issues that IMO only an experienced coach with gravitas and media pull can fix.

yeah, they only brought in potentially one of the most prolific midfielders in the competition, whose mere presence turned his c-grade brother into an a-grader!

no naicos, no filth finals wins i suspect

i know people don't like him, but there's no denying the impact he's had on their fortunes

The undefeated Demons venture across the continent to the spiritual home of the Port Adelaide Football Club on Saturday afternoon for the inaugural match for premiership points between these long-historied clubs. Alberton Oval will however, be a ground familiar to our players following a practice match there last year. We lost both the game and Liv Purcell, who missed 7 home and away matches after suffering facial fractures in the dying moments of the game.

  • AFLW REPORT: Richmond

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmy’s inclusive banner—"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwood’s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.

  • CASEY: Frankston

The late-season run of Casey wins was broken in their first semifinal against Frankston in a heartbreaking end at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night that in many respects reflected their entire season. When they were bad, they committed all of the football transgressions, including poor disposal, indiscipline, an inability to exert pressure, and some terrible decision-making, as exemplified by the period in the game when they conceded nine unanswered goals from early in the second quarter until halfway through the third term. You rarely win when you do this.

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.
